America May Not Have a Ton of Talent, But They Sure Do Have Freaks to Spare

Yes, I complained about America's Got Talent the other day, but I decided to give the show a shot, as I reluctantly do each year. Last night's episode was filled with the usual assortment of talented kids, bad impersonators, delusional dancers/singers/pet owners/flame throwers and a few impressive acts. Add in some heartfelt stories, Nick Cannon discussing how he wants to try out different acrobatic things with his wife in the bedroom (repeatedly) and you've got yourself one of the summer's biggest hits. Still not my cup of tea.

But one act last night did surprise me. After being shown that David Johnson was a freaky guy with an unnatural Baywatch obsession and had written a tribute to his favorite cast member, we actually got to see him perform it. His song starts out rough. Really rough. And he gets buzzed by Piers and David quickly... until he gets to the chorus and reveals that his crush isn't Pam Anderson, but David Hasselhoff. The tune is stupid and gimmicky, but somehow the chorus is currently stuck in my head. And while I'm sure this guy will be a one-"hit" wonder and be eliminated shortly after he arrives in Vegas for the next round, it was a fun unexpected moment of the night that wasn't designed to pull at my heartstrings or gross me out, so that was a refreshing change of pace.
