Brace for Impact: Natasha Henstridge Saves the Earth Again

Men of a certain age will remember where they were the first time they saw Species, the movie that introduced the world to the glory that is Natasha Henstridge. Since then, she's moved away from Sci-Fi, appearing in comedies like the movie The Whole Nine Yards, and series like She Spies and Eli Stone. Well, she returns to the realm of speculative fiction this weekend with her role as a scientist in the two-part ABC miniseries Impact, in which a meteor hits the moon, and the moon's orbit begins to decay, putting Earth at risk. We sat down and talked to her about trajectories, the glass ceiling of moon repair and her new project with Stan "The Man" Lee, and we made it all the way to the end without bringing up Species.

Did you watch any big disaster movies to prepare for filming?
Henstridge:
No, I actually got hired pretty quick to do this -- I believe they were already shooting. So it was enough just to learn my lines and learn the science of it all.

Ever crack up while reading your highly scientific dialogue?
Henstridge:
I kept messing up on the word "trajectory" -- even now, I can't say it right. Trajectory. I kept asking, "Isn't there another word we can use?" But apparently, there isn't a word that means the same thing.

Were you involved in a lot of special effects shots for this film?
Henstridge:
I was playing pretty much a regular human being in this one, although I did have some green-screen shots when I was looking at the moon and the meteor shower, and the astronauts when they go to fix the moon.

Wait, how come you didn't get to fix the moon?
Henstridge:
I was a little jealous I didn't get to go into space, but I was apparently lucky not to be doing it, because the day they filmed those scenes it was extremely hot. Also, they had to talk at regular speed while walking and moving their arms in slow-motion, which is really hard. Tough for an editor, too.

The last four episodes of Eli Stone air this month. What's next for you? More TV?
Henstridge:
I have a couple of offers on the table that I'm considering, but I'm not sure which I'll do. I'm actually about to leave the house to record a role for some mobisodes with Stan Lee. The series is called Time Jumper, and I do a voice and Stan does a voice. I play Charity Vile, and I'm going to do a whole season, however many that is in mobisodes. 10 or 12. It's pretty exciting! I get to play a superhero and I get to meet Stan Lee? How cool is that?

So I take it you're game to do a superhero movie, if asked?
Henstridge:
Oh, of course. That would be a lot of fun. Plus, I have two young sons, so they'd get a kick out of it.

I have to ask, if the script was right, would you come back for Species 4?
Henstridge:
Haven't they already done a Species 4? And a 5? The first one is a great movie, and I'm grateful for it, but after a while, they just get a little unnecessary.

Impact airs this Sunday and next Sunday at 9/8C on ABC and co-stars David James Elliott from JAG. Give us your favorite Natasha roles below.

In the movie they show floating people and objects. But they forgot to mention that atmospheric pressure changes due to gravitational changes would crush any living being.
