Dorm Life: Bringing Legitimacy Back to the College Years and the Web Series
Widely known fact: "The College Years" is essentially the kiss of death for any teen dramedy. One character heads off to some prestigious university (cough Jessie Spano cough) and relinquishes her rights on hot male lead to a less interesting substitute (cough Alex Taber cough) and it all goes downhill from there.
Widely held opinion: A Web series is not a real show, for if it were worth watching, it would be on television. Case in point: Rockville, CA. (Josh Schwartz, I expect better of you.)
And so, out of these two sad, disrespected genres comes Dorm Life, a lesser-known gem from the good folks over at AttentionSpan.TV.
For anyone who remembers what it's like to live on a freshman floor in college, Dorm Life is a hilariously (almost disturbingly) accurate portrayal -- probably because it was written, directed, and produced by seven current and recently graduated UCLA students. Shot in mockumentary style, the episodes range from anywhere between five and 14 minutes in length, featuring quick scene changes and webcam confessionals. A group of unknown actors (many of whom have Dorm Life as their first credit on IMDB) play all the stereotypical characters -- there's the sorority girls, the frat boys, the drug dealer, the guy in the long-distance relationship, the overenthusiastic girl, the creepy theater kid, the silent girl, the token gay guy, the nice guy pining for the "mystery hot girl," and my personal favorite, the douchebag RA.
Whether it's your best college memory (Greek rush, intramural sports, prank wars) or worst (flu epidemic, all-nighters, mystery smell), Dorm Life definitely has it covered in all of its awkward higher education glory. You can watch the episodes out of order but you'll best get to know the characters by starting from the beginning with the link embedded below. Just know that TWoP claims no responsibility if you're suddenly inspired to drink your weight in Jäger Bombs.
