We make fun of Kate Gosselin a lot around here, because this is the internet and that's what we do, and for good reason: she and her husband are the worst. We all know this. But the one thing that I have always noticed about Kate is that she does take care of her impossibly enormous child army. Even when she's damaging them psychologically by sniping at her lazy husband who refuses to do anything but be a miserable zombie, she does appear to have a genuine investment in tending to their needs -- feeding them surprisingly healthy meals, cleaning up all their barf, quelling their disputes, getting them dressed, etc. She's got a shitty attitude and she's allowing them to be exploited on television, but I honestly don't think she wants them to be deprived of basic necessities like water.
Which is why I'm actually going to defend her behavior in this Access Hollywood b-roll clip that's been circulating today, which basically the entire internet wants her head over. Watch, if you haven't already:
Honestly, I think she was so focused on keeping the kids seated and on task for the interview that she didn't even process what Mady was saying. And even if she did hear it at some level, with that many little kids, you give one kid a drink, then they all want a sip, and then there's chaos and the interview setup is all messed up. Should children have to do Access Hollywood interviews? Of course not. Does this automatically mean that she doesn't care whether Mady dies from dehydration or not? Of course not. I still think she's generally horrible, but not every single thing she does is pure evil just because it's her and we hate her. I think this was a stressed out mom moment that people are using as an excuse to make wild "Take her children away!" statements for schadenfreude value.
Holy crap, I can't believe I just defended Kate Gosselin's parenting. The internet is a very evil place indeed.

Okay...I only have 2 kids and i know from experience that if you give one somethng, inevitably, the other will want it too. On a set with 8 kids and ONE bottle of water, it just was not condusive. Let us not forget the fact that Maddy is a drama queen and most certaiy was not going to "die from dehydration". They were all going to get something to drink AFTER the interview, so for all the haters and judges out there, back off for a minute!
Have you actually WATCHED the show? She does very little to care for these children. Jon does the bathing, dressing and feeding. She tosses 6 grapes and some crackers on a paper plate and calls it a meal.
When her son was sick, she donned a surgical mask, wailed like it was toxic waste and put him to sleep on the laundry room floor in the dark. Jon came home and took care of him.
She really is evil and more proof will surface.
I could be wrong about this, but don't they basically have an army of helpers 'behind the scenes' doing a lot of the bathing/feeding/what have you? Just saying - I've heard she has a lot of help that's never on camera. Ugh. Haaaaaaate.
I just applaud your ability to get the term "schadenfreude" in an article about Jon & Kate Plus 8. Well done!
I've been shocked to find myself rolling my eyes at the Kate hate, too. I don't like her, by any means, but people are looking for any opportunity to bash her... the same people who watch the show, mind you!
I'm not her, so I have no idea what was going through her head, but with only two kids, I've been in situations before where I think it's a good idea, and change my mind mid-way through. That could have been what we saw; maybe she thought she could give them all drinks quickly, then realized they were going live soon and put the water away. Who knows?! None of us know what it's like to be in that situation, but so many people want to criticize it.
The hate is out of hand and Maddy is a K.I.T. (Kate In Training) but she didn't have to drink the water in front of her. That was kinda snotty. Even so, I agree, this viral goodie is a bit of a stretch.
I think the problem was that the daughter was begging for water and then Kate asked for a bottle of water, took a drink her self and then said the children can get some after the interview. Why the heck did Kate get to have water and not the daughter? Why didn't she wait too? It was like a big tease to the child for no reason. IMO it's something an elder sibling would do not a mother.
Also, I used to work in television. I'm sure there was an IFB in her ear and along with Mady being pouty, she also had programming, producers and anchors talking to her. Depending on which ear the IFB was in, it makes it very hard to hear other things going on around you. What we see seems quiet, but I'm sure she had more distractions than just her children, who were actually behaving very well.
Not a big Kate fan, but the outrage of this specific video is sorta of ridiculous. I speak often professionally and I can attest that you get dry mouth about half way through a long speaking segment. I can totally understand Kate wanting to have a drink before speaking.
As a mother of three, I can also understand why she didn't want Mady to have a drink. One has a drink all of them want one also. And then, invariably, one will spill. And another will cry. She did what any other parent would have done - told them they can have one after the interview.
All other times, Kate is horrendous.
The part that upset me the most was after Mady said she was thirsty Kate replied with "Oh yea I am too" and proceeded to get water for herself and drink it in front of Mady. It's like saying "I get what I want when I want it... even if I didn't want it until you said you wanted it" and then telling Mady "but you don't get it". I understand that if she had given it to Mady everyone would have wanted some, but she herself should not have had any if she was not going to allow Mady any.
What's that on top of her head?!?
To me -- after Kate set her water bottle down on the floor next to her -- it looked like she was reaching for it with the intention of giving her daughter some of that water, but in that moment she got notified that they were starting, so she had to set it back down and say 'wait.'
There have been plenty of things that Kate has done or said on her show that have annoyed the crap out of me, but this was hardly some sadistic withholding of basic needs. In this case, I say cut her some slack.
I have to agree with many posters above, both for my usual Kate hate and that this is not a big deal for all the reasons listed. I also thought the huge headline "Mom You're Mean" or whatever it was on US was a laugh. Those of us with children are really used to hearing that! I'm surprised drama queen Mady didn't break that out right in the middle of the interview!
She really should not have had a drink brought to her. This would have been the perfect way to teach Maddy-bratty that we don't always get what we want.
Instead of her using this as a tool for an extremely important lesson, she just rips a huge hole in a later lesson she will "try" to teach this kid. It will serve her right to get this little incident thrown back in her face.
I don't have a problem with requiring one child or all of the children to wait to get some water, although that's not really an ideal situation.
What is galling about this video clip is that her daughter is all but begging for water, says we haven't had much to drink all day, Kate realizes that's true (she says "that's true") and then asks for a bottle of water FOR HERSELF and drinks it in front of the kid who has been begging for water and then puts it over beside the chair.
I mean, seriously, who does that? I'm a mom. If I'm making my kid wait for some water, I'm not going to then request water for myself and drink it in front of her. Mady was right, that was just mean. And selfish. Selfish people don't make for good parents.
If Mady has behavioral issues, then deal with those SEPARATE from her requests for basic necessities. This woman is a narcissist. It's not as if Mady were asking for a milkshake or a steak. How hard would it have been to give her a slug from that bottle?
"Let us not forget the fact that Maddy is a drama queen and most certaiy was not going to "die from dehydration.""
Here is the problem with J&K + 8 as a TV show. Mady's been labeled a drama queen and i some ways, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Kate's not a horrible mother, but she's not a good one either. And as for the assertion that she cleans up their puke, you clearly haven't watched the show too carefully. When they're sick, she takes a step back so that they don't get her clothes dirty/messy.
I agree with pretty much everything on here. The clip was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. However, 3 things:
1) It did seem mean to take the water in front of her child.
2) Hitting the nail on the head is the observation that a bunch of 5 and 8 year olds shouldn't have to pose for interviews, magazine articles and photo shoots all day. This would wear out the average adult, much less young ones with short attention spans. They didn't choose this TV life and it's obvious they don't enjoy it.
3) I feel bad for Mady getting labeled "The Drama Queen" or really any of the kids getting any kind of labels to go with their personalities. This isn't a scripted show with characters, these are real kids. I bet we all had tons of embarrassing moments and phases full of bad behavior that we wouldn't want aired and immortalized on national television. Children's personalities take on lots of different incarnations before they reach adulthood. Mady could be nothing like this in 3, 5, or 10 years. It's too bad she's becoming an over-the-top caricature instead of just a kid.
I had the same reaction that she was probably trying to avoid opening the floodgates by giving one child a drink. But then she asked for a bottle of water and took a drink right in front of the one child who was begging for one. There is no way to spin this behavior in a positive or even apologetic manner - she was simply more focused on the business of having her kids on camera than taking care of their needs at the moment. And what's most mind boggling to me is that she KNOWS the camera is rolling and picking this up - she just doesn't care. I really feel for these kids and wonder if and when their father is ever going to man up and get them out of this situation?
how dare kate take a drink of water in front of her child and not offer her some who cares if it would have taken five min to let all the kids have a sip I just cant believe how selfish she is I can never imagine myself doing that to one of my children I dont care if I had twenty kids.I think she is turning into a selfish bitch
What a witch!!! Pity the children.
these children wll be adults someday and will they be greatful. No. They will resent not having a Mother in the household instead of a TV star auther and public speaker.
Just an observation....at the very end of the clip about the water Kate asks someone off camera if they had the Olive Garden cups. Sounds to me like another advertising ploy??
I like totally love Kate she is like my role model. I am jon and kate plus 8's #1fan I watch them all the time! I think ppl hatin on kate should totally layoff. she didnt cheat on jon so ppl should lay off jon cheated on kate so... i totally want to meet them!!!!
I don't think this was bad enough to take her children away from her. That is a huge overreaction. I just think it was very thoughtless, selfish behavior on her part. It seemed like Mady thought Kate asked for the water so Mady could have a drink, and then when she drank it herself it upset Mady that much more. Pay more attention to your child than to your media opportunities.
