BLOGS
It's Tony Awards weekend, and this year's host is the mother of all upgrades from last year's Whoopi Goldberg: Neil Patrick Harris! He has a perfect angel voice and he's everybody's favorite. Perfect. And while I didn't really love any of this year's shows, I'll still be watching because of NPH -- and the Liza performance we've been promised, of course. I'm even having the boys over for Skinny 'n Sweets (vodka, diet coke, and butterscotch schnapps, which is as disgusting as it sounds, but hey, 9 to 5) to celebrate, I'm so excited! Anyway, enough about me. Neil Patrick Harris did a li'l promotional conference call for the show, and us media types even snuck in some questions about HIMYM, Dr. Horrible and Harold & Kumar. Highlights below. Enjoy!
Can you tell us what your Tonys opening will be like?
Neil Patrick Harris: They actually have a big, giant opening planned that is bigger than I think they've ever had in Tony history. I actually don't think I'm going to be involved in it. After it's done, I think they are going to introduce me and I'll come and make some remarks and pretty much start the show. I'm going to try and take a page off of Mr. Jackman's hosting duties, the first season -- the first year that he did it he wasn't on a ton and didn't do a lot of performing, but just tried to make the audience feel comfortable and welcome and keep things running at a smooth clip.
Any shows in particular that you are rooting for at the Tony Awards this year?
NPH: This year is all about Billy Elliot, and what kind of juggernaut it will be. I've seen it in London. I'm actually seeing it on Friday night. It's a wonderful show, but I saw two weeks ago -- two weeks ago? Yes -- Next to Normal, which is sort of the anti-juggernaut Broadway show. Small cast about a woman struggling with her sort of mental disorder, and small cast, amazing score, amazing music. I can't stop singing it and listening to it. So, it will be fun, I think, and interesting if there were a couple less-predictable award winners, and I would be thrilled if Next to Normal was one of them.
What do you think is more likely: a follow-up to Dr. Horrible's Blog or, I know, you kind of died in Harold & Kumar, are you going to be in the third one that they are doing?
NPH: Well, I must reprimand you for not sticking through the end of the credits of the second one. If you think two gunshot wounds to my chest is going to keep NPH down, you crazy, yo. I know that they've announced the release date for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, which is November of 2010, so I'm hoping I get to be naughty in that one as well.
And you and Joss, anything more going on with Dr. Horrible?
NPH: Circumstances aren't allowing it yet. So, we're all gung-ho on a future for it, but Dollhouse just got picked up, which was a surprise to lots, and Nathan is now doing Castle, which just got picked up, which is great, and I'm still in How I Met Your Mother right now. So, I think once all of our other dust settles, we have something to fall back on.
Do you have any word on what's next for Robin and Barney?
NPH: I have no word yet. I know they start back to work now, maybe a week ago, maybe in a week. So, I don't know. I'm a big fan of our writing staff. We don't do much improvising, we don't feel it a bit necessary to complain about "our-character-wouldn't-say-that," or motivation, almost uniformly. So, if they want to write a long chapter with Barney and Robin together, I'm sure that they will maintain Barney being in his normal self -- no one on the show is looking to change the group dynamic. And yet, that's an interesting wrinkle, so I'm sure that they'll play it as well as they played other interesting chapters within the show. I'm not sure -- it could be like two episodes and out. They could try and get together and see that it's a terrible idea and be friends and it could run a season or more. But I'm a big Cobie Smulders fan. So, as much time as I get to spend with her, will make me happy.
Do you have any pre-show rituals you do?
NPH: I try to caffeinate myself about 1/2 hour before I start something and I try to not eat a lot of food because I have a weak stomach. And now that I say that out loud, I realize that maybe the caffeine has something to do with the weak stomach, but I'm not about to change it now.
