On paper, Drop Dead Diva is exactly the kind of thing I would hate. Pretty girls are stupid and shallow, fat girls are smart but pathetic and lonely, mixed in with a few shamelessly ripped-from-Legally-Blonde courtroom scenes: the show. So clichéd, so stupid, and ostensibly, so condescending to the female audience it appeals to. But for whatever reason, I've been utterly charmed by it. Brooke Elliott is adorable, her best friend Stacy is sweet and likable, and that Dermot Mulroney-looking guy is mopey but somehow completely tolerable. I even think the over-the-top, wholly implausible courtroom scenes are funny. I don't know, maybe I'm having a stupid stuff renaissance or something. I did just tell the internet how psyched I am for G-Force, and I've been watching a lot of Gossip Girl DVDs pretty much unironically, which is just not normal.
And it is summer, of course, a time in which we all lower our standards considerably when it comes to show quality. But the thing is, I'm not just watching Drop Dead Diva the way I watch The Bachelorette -- mindlessly laughing at how stupid everybody is and just kind of vaguely hating all of them without particularly caring whether they live or die, much less fall in love. No, I'm actually invested in Drop Dead Diva. I care about the characters, like, for real. Last night when Stacy infiltrated that trucking company and helped Jane take down some corrupt assholes I actually yelled "Yay!" in my living room. Fricking yay, I yelled. At Drop Dead Diva. So embarrassing. What is this show doing to me? It's so stupid and should really only be a half hour if anything and I know it, and yet, here I am, totally psyched for it and DVR-ing True Blood so I can watch it in real time, three weeks in a row now. Weird.
So anyway, shamefulness aside, it's time for a Drop Dead Diva pitch and bitch session! First of all, how weird was it that Rosie O'Donnell wasn't even that annoying last night? Very weird! But show, don't make a big ass deal about how you got Margaret Cho to be a regular and then not really use her. She needs more screen time! She's funny! And I'm so proud of Stacy for actually applying herself to something constructive last night, but I'm worried that this looming romantic entanglement with Jane's guardian angel is just going to be a big ole mess when it finally goes down. And while I was very glad hot bitchy lawyer got caught in her lie to Dermot Mulroney guy, they're totally going to start sleeping together eventually and Jane's just going to freak out, which will be sad. But you know what? I may be crazy, but I kind of want Jane and her boss to hook up for some reason, though I know the show wants her to be back with Faux-lroney, which makes sense of course.
And lastly, oh my god, please don't tell anyone I watch this show or care about any of this.

I love this show and I thought I would hate it. Its crazy- I DVR it, watch it fast so my roomie will not notice, and love it
I also agree, I thought the premise was stupid. But Jane/Deb is fun to watch. I also want her to hook up with her boss more than her ex(if you can call him that). I only watch it online though.
I made fun of the commercial for this show and said I would never watch it. However, I was really bored one night and watched the pilot. I promptly set my DVR to record the rest and have even been watching it in real time! I don't know why, but there is something about this show I really like. Has summer fried all of our brains or is this show actually good?
I saw this late on Saturday evening when they ran a repeat of the second week's episode, and I found myself watching it last night as well. The characters are all redeemable, even boss guy (into the money) and cute girl who is after the cute guy (learns her lessons). And Stacy is not dumb, even though she thinks she is. I missed the first episode -- is it on line somewhere?
I LOVE this show!! I've told all of my friends about it and I love how it's not cloying or coy. Where has Brooke Elliott been? EMMY, please! Yeah, I'm DVRing True Blood too. Shhh..
I watched this last just now for the second time, and I am so surprised I am hooked.
I don't understand it myself. I watched the first episode and I was hooked.
Totally hooked on it. I find myself cheering as Deb grows up, and feeling sad with her. Fricking Lifetime. They finally hooked me.
Well, I prefer Jane/Deb with the boyfriend, but let's put that aside and reflect on his actions this last episode. He tells lawyerbitch it's only been a month since he lost Deb (to whom he was going to propose!) and then turns around and goes out with her anyway??!!! Maybe they deserve each other after all.
It's sad that I'm turning into my mom. I'd always make fun of her for watching Lifetime. Darn that stupid channel. It's finally reeled me in.
OMG I love this show and am DVR'g True Blood too. Crazy, it should be the other way around since TB doesn't have commericials but I just can't wait to see what Jane/Deb does next!
Where has Brooke Elliott been? EMMY, please!
Brooke was on Broadway before this. She was wonderful in the smallish part of Majella in the little-appreciated THE PIRATE QUEEN. (I had the opportunity to meet her and chat briefly after the last show; she's a genuinely lovely person.)
Hey, I also think Jane should get together with Parker and he had an extra special look for her in last night's episode so I'm getting excited (and not even embarrassed about it).
But, I'm upset why Jane hasn't had any friends or family visit her in like forever. Hello? Was she THAT pathetic? Is no one grieving for Jane who is really dead?
And also - I'm surprised Deb hasn't gone on a diet yet. Isn't she missing her old body?
I have seen each and every episode and can not wait for the second season. I have only one question, why did they take fred (guardian angel) from the show?
It's my favorite show! I've made excuses not to go somewhere just so I could get my fix of DDD. NOT the typical fat/skinny chick show. Can't wait for the new shows. I pay extra for my East/West Coast channels just to catch something I missed or...UH just plain watch it again in 2 hours.
I love it. It's very humorous and intelligent although it has it's 'quirks'. Brooke Elliot ..one word...FABULOUS!
THX that's a great asenwr!
Life is short, and this artcile saved valuable time on this Earth.
