John Barrowman: What He Should Do Instead of Desperate Housewives

So there's a story swirling around that John Barrowman (of Doctor Who and Torchwood fame) is auditioning for a part on Desperate Housewives next season. No word on what the role is, but this news troubles me. I adore his Captain Jack, love watching him on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and even have some of his CDs (too much info? Probably). Anyway, I really can't get enough of the guy, and while there is a part of me that enjoys the idea that this could skyrocket him into a much bigger star and people might actually know what I'm talking about when I go on and on about how much I love him, or they come into my house and see his action figures and wonder who he is, but the other part of me wishes that it were any show other than Desperate Housewives. If this does come to fruition, of course I'll watch it, but really, I'd hope that maybe he'd consider parts on some of these other shows instead.

Glee
He's a musical guy who can sing and act, so he'd be perfect for a rival coach, or a bitter drama coach who gets mad when all his singers get co-opted for the glee club just when he's busy trying to cast for the spring musical.

American Idol
He really should find a way to be a judge on this. He's a passionate and enthusiastic commenter on the Any Dream Will Do/How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? UK talent searches, and he'd fit right in. He'd know a lot more about music than Kara or Randy, at the very least, and he's got opinions and he's not afraid to use them. And he'd love overly theatrical contestants... just like I do. He and Simon could have some awesome catfights!

True Blood
Well, here we'd want him to be in his Captain Jack role, because obviously having an omnisexual (likes women/men/aliens) man who can't die meet up with vampire Eric in some capacity would be about the most perfect thing ever.

Mad Men
With his classic jawline and retro good looks, he'd fit right in with Don Draper and co. Cast him as a flamboyant new ad exec and you are good to go.

Grey's Anatomy
If he's going to be on a mediocre, soapy show, let it be this one. He'd be a hot doctor who could flirt with Sloan and make things much more interesting. Oh, and there could be a special episode where he'd casually run his fingers through McDreamy's tresses and cause tension between Derek and his dowdy girlfriend.

Heroes
One Doctor Who alum (Christopher Eccelston) did a brief stint on this show already, so why not one more? It could really only help the show at this point. His special ability? Regeneration. He could secretly be related to Claire even.

Obviously my first choice would be for him to do more Torchwood episodes, but that's totally in the hands of the BBC folks, so I'll take what I can get.

Angel, I had the EXACT same reaction when I heard about John and DH. WTH? Of those choices I'd want him to be on True Blood. You're right, Captain Jack and Eric would be the best thing EVER.

Desperate Housewives has been a guilty pleasure of mine, so if he IS on it - well, just more pleasure for me =D. But I agree that there are OTHER shows he'd actually be a great guest star (single or recurring) on as well. Something light, like "Chuck" could be fun. "Fringe" for something more genre. "Criminal Minds" as a serial killer for something darker and yet still mainstream ... Top of that list is obviously wanting more Torchwood!

Oh he is just so beautiful. And yes he needs to be a bigger star in the States. But not on DH. Dear God not on that show. So I like all of your ideas.

I can't remember the link but I have read that there is a fourth season of Torchwood in the works! Who knows how that will work...but it's good news for me.

Totally agree, Angel. Anything but Desperate Housewives! Love the Mad Men idea.

I'd love to see him on Friday Night Lights as a wealthy former QB1 back in town for a fundraiser for Dillon, but when the boosters find out he's gay they reject his $ so he jumps on board with Coach Taylor's new team at East Dillon. Not that I've thought about this at all.

I'm obviously weird because I really dislike John Barrowman, so just no to this. I don't need his overacting ruining my favourite show.

Angel, I think you may be the only person that like John Barrowman as much as me. I adore him and I would even start watching DH again for him if that's where he's on. I keep trying to explain to people who he is, but they all look at me like I'm crazy.

I agree with you Angel, please don't have JB go on DH. They'll find a way to make him boring and lame, like everyone else on that show. I'd love to see him on Burn Notice as a double agent flirting with both Michael and Fi. Now that would be some great TV.

If he was on Glee I would explode with musical delight.

WHY does he need to be a bigger star in the States? It isn't the centre of the universe. Being a big star in the UK is fine.

I'm not necessarily thinking "WTH" with the whole John on D.H thing, because quite frankly I kind of fancy him, and seeing him in anything more mainstream, and getting more of an opportunity to "perve" on him is a win for me.

I definitely agree with you on Glee and Mad Men. I think he's "suited" to both of them. And it would certainly be amusing if he were casted!

Ia gree with everything already said I'm not a fan of DH but know he is and would totelly watch to see him but he would be great in any other of these shows. For ex. in Mad men we've already seen what he would look like in the 60s with this past Torchwood mini-sereis and he was hot! Like you it would be nice to have people know who i'm talking about when I talk about JB (which is all the time) but at the same time it's nice having him to myself.

I kind of want to keep him as he is now, not too well known because if he takes off, well, he's likely not to be as accessible as he is now. I met him at Comic-con this year and he's absolutely as nice as I had hoped he would be.
And I'm also a huge fan, having gone to the UK twice in the past year to see him in concert and his Panto show. Still debating whether to go see him in La Cage.
I would, however, like to see him play something totally different, a bad guy or something along those lines.

Not a fan of DH, however I will watch it when and if John is on it. Hey, I watched when Richard Burgi (of The Sentinel fame) was on it.

Definitely NOT American Idol, please. John is better than that. I would love to see him on True Blood, as Jack or as a seductive, humorous vampire. I don't get the channel, but I do buy the DVDs.

John on DH shouldn't be a problem with TW filming. He's doing La Cage in the fall, panto in the winter, so he won't even have time to think of fiming season 4 of Torchwood until next spring or summer. Filming DH, depending on how many eps he's doing, shouldn't take more than 2 weeks. Can't stand DH, but I'll watch for John.

@Rose + Angela: exactly my feelings and worries!

I hope they won't pigeonhole him IF he's going to make it to DH (frankly, I don't like DH) ....

I dunno, Nathan Fillion slummed it on Desperate Housewives for a season before moving on to the glory that is 'Castle,' so I'm just looking at this as a stop on the road to awesome.
