BLOGS
In the wake of Ted Kennedy's sad passing, some particularly interesting factoids are emerging about the senator. Namely, that along with quality time spent with his family and friends, he also chose to spend his final days watching every single episode of 24 on DVD. A sound decision -- albeit perhaps an odd one (considering all the political assassinations that occur on the show) -- since 24 is one of the most consistently entertaining (minus a bum season or two) and compelling series of the past decade, if not ever. If I knew I didn't have much time left, Jack Bauer would probably take my mind off of it. Which got us thinking about the shows we'd recommend that the average person with a terminal illness watch if they haven't already before they pass away -- and the shows they should most definitely not waste their precious hours on. The West Wing
Brilliant, delightful, optimistic melodrama with very high highs ("Two Cathedrals") and lows ("The Stackhouse Filibuster") that are still better than most shows' best episodes. I actually watched this once while loopy on pain meds after a wisdom teeth extraction and it was like ten times the rollercoaster of emotions it normally is. It was honestly one of the greatest viewing experiences of my entire life.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I can't think of a more enjoyable form of escapism than Buffy, and though its final season is looked down upon, the series was wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion that wouldn't leave a person disappointed on their death bed.
Freaks & Geeks
There weren't a lot of episodes, but you're not going to find more quality in such a scant quantity than Freaks & Geeks. Besides, Sam Weird needs you, and you can't leave this world not knowing that punkers don't call themselves punkers. You'd get your ass kicked in the after life.
The Office (UK)
Another short one at only 14 episodes, the original Office series wrapped up perfectly and is one of best things ever created for the television medium. If you're looking for a sitcom to watch before you go, this is the one to make your mission.
Lost
If your prognosis leaves you alive until next May's guaranteed-to-be-mind-blowing series conclusion, this crazy ride of a show will get your pulse (and mind) racing one last time.
Don't Watch:
Sex and the City
Besides its constant vapidity, everything that was mindlessly enjoyable about this series vanished in its later seasons. Yes, it is difficult to prevent people on any long-running show from becoming parodies of themselves, but this is the shining textbook example of how not to write enduring characters.
Battlestar Galactica
A beautifully genius show... until the end, which wasn't just disappointing, it was absurd. And I don't know if anyone's ever mentioned this before, but it's also slightly bleak. You might want to watch something happier in your state.
Heroes
If you don't have a lot of time left, don't let the decent first season hook you into suffering the following two. Even you have too much to live for.
The Sopranos
Critically acclaimed, well-acted, thrilling (when it wasn't boring, let's be honest) and groundbreaking television, its open-to-interpretation letdown of an ending will just frustrate you. It's just not worth it if you can only see one more series.
Grey's Anatomy
Another example of a show that started out well and just went from good to bad to worse to nearly unwatchable over the course of five seasons. It could very well come back with a vengeance next month and ultimately wrap up well whenever it ultimately ends... but let's just say we wouldn't prescribe it on DVD to the person without time to spare.

Pushing Daisies! What better way to prepare yourself for the "great beyond!"
Don't forget Life on Mars (UK). It's short, it's brilliant and it's got Philip Glenister in white loafers. What more can one ask for before shuffling off their mortal coil?
I COMPLETELY agree with Pushing Daisies. That is the last show I want to watch when I die. Plus, if you're dying young you'll be able to sympathize with both Charlotte AND the show it's self. Definitely killed way too soon. =(
The X-Files
Couple of disagreements: SatC isn't about strong characters, but rather seeing people "types" and questions we can relate to in our own romantic relationships.
While Sopranos often felt like a drag at 40-50 minutes an episode, those who have studied acting are truly able to appreciate being able to ponder how each actor plays each of those beats, and how they can convey their emotion with only a look or some small action during those seemingly interminable silences.
In order to prepare for the afterlife, I'd recommend Six Feet Under. Really, it made me think about the hard choices, like burial or cremation? Viewing or no viewing? That show really made some things seem less scary.
Bit harsh on a couple there because of not great finales, though both are a bit depressing either way (and one only a poor finale for trying to shoehorn in a happy ending that didn't fit well).
Lost is awesome for sure, however, its presence on the list should be based on when you are expected to die. I mean if you are terminally ill and dying in two months, don't watch. Not that I am sick or anything but the dying before knowing the end of Lost would suck.
For pure entertainment value, you have to include Veronica Mars.
Man that annoys me about BSG. I watched it in a marathon after it finished, without having watched it before, and I was starting the third season after the amazing season two finale, and i was thinking, why did it end? it's just getting better...and then halfway through season three I thought, Ooh, I get it...and then season four I was thinking PLEASE JUST END. And it did. And it was one of the worst finales i have seen in my life.
The Wire - gripping and rewarding....
The X-Files and Pushing Daisies for sure! It doesn't get any better.
Friday Night Lights!
If I was on my deathbed, I'd totally watch SATC. Then, I could feel cheered up and self-righteous, much like Mindy, before I croaked!
I'd watch Doctor Who and Life, just because it's uplifting.
Seriously? It's not like the editors to forget the awesomeness that was Veronica Mars.
OK, good, others brought up 'Veronica Mars' too.
Sports Night and Firefly, y'all.
I'd add Angel to that. The way it ends is perfect just before you die, because you'll just feel like you died kicking ass in an apocalypse like the characters you just fell in love with.
And the very same goes to Six Feet Under, ya'll! How was SFU not mentioned on this list?! Makes you totally come to terms with your death. Everything. Everyone. Everywhere. Ends... Including you!
And Firefly, just because. Sigh.
... I don't care if anyone else would watch it or not, but I'd watch every episode of the Golden Girls again.
Another vote for "Six Feet Under" here. That finale should be playing as you expire your last breath!
If I was dying I could use a good laugh, so I would add Arrested Development to the list.
I'm in the process of watching Stargate: SG-1 and absolutely must finish it, and Stargate: Atlantis, before I make my final exit.
I completely agree with Veronica Mars (even though it didn't really finish) and the Golden Girls.
I'd be watching Dr. Who. All 30 years and then hit the new stuff. no better way to go than watching a man who repeatedly died to save his companions and a world he isn't even part of.
How can a list of great television exclude Deadwood?
For myself, I'd probably pick the most boring show I could. Maybe Dawson's Creek. That way, even if I only had a week to live, by the end of it, either it will seem like I've lived way longer or I'd be praying for the end to come to stop the suffering.
I'd go with Titus. If nothing else, you'd spend your last few days seriously laughing your butt off, and what's better than that?
I agree with a few above with Six Feet Under, especially for this theme of "before you die." It's one of the most realistic (in terms of actual characters), emotional shows that really makes you think. I'm still just on season 4 but I hear the series finale is one of the best there is.
I disagree with your take on BSG - the finale wasn't great, but it's not worth missing out on one of the best scifi (not SyFy) shows out there.
Six Feet Under should definitely be on the list, as should The Wire, and Planet Earth. I know PE isn't technically a TV show, but it's a series no one should miss out on, and it would be good to watch when you're on pain meds and can't concentrate. ;)
Must see: Babylon 5, which has an especially poignant final episode. In the category of great series with disappointing final seasons, the original UK Coupling. Skip season 4 and it belongs on the list.
Anyone for My So-Called Life? I wouldn't mind going into that good night dreaming of Jordan Catalano.
I second My So-Called Life (only 13 eps) and Veronica Mars (maybe just season 1 though), as well as Firefly.
The first season of Cheers - without a doubt the funniest well written tv season of all time!!!! - Best episode is when Sam loses his lucky bottle cap and is tempted to drink again.
Agree about Pushing Daisies and will add The Middleman and Wonderfalls. You can empathize that both thier demise and yours was/will be unfair and too early.
Curb Your Enthusiasm. (Why does TWOP ignore this masterpiece?)
1. 6 Feet Under, 2. Pushing Daisies, 3. X Files, 4. LOST, 5. Dr Who - you just close your eyes as the TARDIS de-materializes one last time.
I can't believe no one has mentioned The Wire. Not an escapist fantasy by any means, but watching 1 episode leaves you to wanting to watch another episode immediately.
Why no love for animation?
1. Futurama
2. The Venture Brothers
3. King of the Hill
Russell Smith. The WIRE!!! Also: Twin Peaks, and Veronica Mars. And True Blood, for ITS pure entertainment value.
@JCallejas - I completely agree! All fantastic, escapist shows with a quirky sense of humor. Perfect to take your mind off things...
The first 5 seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street. TV, for me, has never gotten better. And if the pain's too much and I want to end it early, I'll just watch season 7.
I completely disagree with your choice of BSG - the BEST show that I have ever seen. The finale was better than anything else on T.V. today even though some of you might not have thought it was that great! Whatever!!!
Veronica Mars, Six Feet Under and My So-Called Life would also be on my list.
No Question. If I'm about to croak because I have a terminal illness, I'd want to laugh, be entertained, and thoroughly enjoy myself. Only one show will do all those and it is the first Four seasons of MARTIN! Martin Lawrence, for the first 4 seasons, was amazingly funny.
Alias, all five crazy seasons, even where the story lines get dull. What a ride.
The Simpsons. I can't think of a more hilarious, insightful, and just plain fantastic show to watch under any circumstances. And I believe that it's also the kind of show that could provide some comfort to a watcher facing the end of his or her life.
Watch the first season of Heroes, it was worth it. It was the rest of the series that suffered.
Seriously? BSG is a no-watch because you didn't really like the finale? WATCH BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. It's really, really good ;)
If it were me, I'd do a Bryan Fuller marathon (and they were all cancelled so not a lot of episodes). Most deal with the afterlife and/or a higher power.
If you were to watch Heroes, watch everything but the finale. It goes downhill from there.
I'd also watch Burn Notice, Spaced, and HIMYM for the last time.
I would also add *six feet under* to that list.
you are an idiot. the ending of BSG was unbelievable and all of the information leading up to the end supports the ending. miraculous things happened the whole time and one major thing happened at the end. you were probably just angry with the ending because you wanted them to land on the planet of steak and flowers and happy places!
Replace Buffy with Babylon 5, far deeper, far better written show.
So agree with BSG, first two years were pretty good, but man after that did they lay it on thick with the symbolism, dream sequences, and religion. Throw in Starbuck not developing one iota in the three years I managed and Apollo failing to find a spine, Helo constantly gurning, and good lord, not even Roslin, Tighe and Adama could save it.
Also all of heroes stinks. All the good battles go on behind closed doors. That's really entertaining. Hey let's make a show about super powered people and never show any battles.
I have an idea, for the next batman movie every batman attacks the lights should go out because it's easier for him to beat people in the dark and when the light comes back on all the bad guys are tied up. Oh and lets kill Nathan every season...oh wait they did. Oh no a painting about a bad future. we've never seen that before!
I agree, although I disagree with your description of Buffy as 'escapism'. It might've had vampires, demons, witchcraft and seriously eloquent teenagers, but it said more about real life than any other TV series I've ever watched.
I agree, although I disagree with your description of Buffy as 'escapism'. It might've had vampires, demons, witchcraft and seriously eloquent teenagers, but it said more about real life than any other TV series I've ever watched.
Many excellent suggestions here, but don't forget to watch, "Dead Like Me"!
The BSG ending was was so bad, it poisoned the entire series, backwards in time. Every episode had to be re-evaluated in light of the grand suckage of a literal interpretation of deux ex machina.
For those that don't think Buffy has the depth, watch it again. And again. There's a reason they teach college courses on this show. Not to mention that its story is continuing in the Dark Horse comic.
It's very rare for me to agree with all the choices in one of these lists, but this one hit 100%.
I second the vote to add Angel to Buffy because it gives hope of a reward after death and that love does matter even beyond the grave. but I'd also add "Dead Like Me." It put death into a unique perspective and as a entry point to better world for most of the folks George and her team mates reaped. Very spiritual enlightening, along the lines of lightening the spirit. The episode with rube and the yoga instructor was very zen and peaceful with passing on.
Egregious oversights, not to include The Wire and Veronica Mars.
Blackadder - the original four series (take or leave the cavalier years and back and forth) - Rowen Atkinson at his best, Hugh Laurie as pure comedy gold as George, and the most poignant ending of a comedy ever. It appears the BBC didn't always export the later series, which just got better and better.
c'mon, not one It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? best ever, hands down.
I say Farscape is a very good show to watch. It did not ever dissapoint.
If I had 6 months, I'd go out with the DVDs of:
1. Pushing Daisies(just plain fun)
2. Dr. Who (the David Tennant series)
3. Babylon 5 (great SF and I loved the series finale - get me in the right state of mind)
4. Battlestar Galactica (reimagining) (the best SF series ever broadcast; bleak but worth it. And I liked the ending.
5. Avatar: The Last Airbender (kid's series on Nickelodeon, but I saw a few eps and got hooked. Great American anime!)
6. Starblazers, seasons 1 & 2 (the anime that introduced many American teens to Anime...with one of the best theme songs ever!!)
7. All 10 years of Stargate: SG1 (a long haul, but worth it.)
8. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (everyone needs a guilty pleasure...and it's got smart writing.)
9. Angel (Same thing)
10. Titus (a show so politically incorrect it made All in the Family look like safe TV)
11. Yeah, an odd number, but I had to end with South Park. (Hopefully, I'd get the latest season before checking out.)
Also Nip Tuck (awsome),Firefly, Alias, CSI (why not, but u can skip a couple of seasons). But more important Buffy, Buffy, Buffy.
firefly, veronica mars, definitely buffy, and eureka.
*Veronica Mars (maybe not the 3rd season, but the first two)
*Blackadder for sure
Going farther back, Quantum Leap. It was so well-written, and Sam Bakula and Dean Rockwell were great.
I agree that laughter is the best way - Cheers (the ones with Coach and Diane are best), Sanford and Son, All in the family (you just cannot say that stuff on tv with every group protesting), and the episode of family ties called "my name is alex" where he talks to a shrink about the death of his friend - one of the greatest episodes of television of all time.
Actually, i'd probably spend the last weeks reading or listening to audio. Someone mentioned Doctor Who, there's about 10 times as much material in radio plays alone as there are in the tv shows.
But since this site is about tv, here are my picks:
Andromeda
X Files
History of Britain
The David Suchet version of Hercule Perriot.
The Jeremy Brett version of Sherlock Homes.
Dark Star
The Duelists
The Young Indiana Jones
Dollhouse
Yes, Minister
Forever Knight
Highway to hell, stairway to heaven, or dirt food it'd have to be Farscape, followed by Buffy, Angel, South Park and just to make life seem really long and in need of ending... Dawson's Creek.
Buffy, yes, yes, yes (and I shall plan to watch many others mentioned, since I've missed many), but I second the mention of "Farscape." Loved it.
The Gilmore Girls
Minder
knottygirl (it won't let me reply), it's Dean Stockwell, but otherwise I completely agree with you. MIA, The Leap Home Parts 1&2, and Mirror Image are some of the best episodes about friendship EVER.
Must also echo:
Six Feet Under (makes you feel better about dying)
Veronica Mars (not just entertaining, but also smart and witty...kind of annoyed that it doesn't get the respect it deserves [my 54-year-old mom also loves VM])
Buffy (see VM)
True Blood (you'll be fighting the morphine, on the edge of your hospital bed for the last 24 hours of your life)
Must add:
American Dreams (it just makes you feel good)
Six Feet Under, sure, but I'd suggest skipping the episode where David is tortured if your time is drawing near. Yikes. I close my eyes today and I still see that guy. Probably the most wrenching hour of scripted tv I've ever watched.
Homefront's 42 episodes are perfection, so there's that. I'm also surprised no one has mentioned Everwood. A great, life affirming show that dealt with life and death in such a humane way, especially the first two seasons. The Wire, too; both shows in their own way ultimately argued that life was worth the hard work, and that's a good thought to keep.
Also the comedies, too many to mention, but I'll be the first (I think) to add the wonderful 14 episodes of the one, the only Spaced.
Epic fail for the three duplicate replys! But jenn, I agree 100% about American Dreams, just wish we could get seasons 2 and 3 on DVD!
The original BBC Life On Mars absolutely, although you'd still need a region-free player to watch series 2 on DVD. But, if you haven't got much time left to spend it, not a bad investment for your final days.
I would add Firefly, Angel, Roswell and Veronica Mars, along with Buffy. All series I have watched over and over.
You forgot to mention another awesome British show called "Skins". I only recommend Season 1 and 2 though. Season 3 doesn't do a thing for me. Also True Blood should've gotten a mention.
I don't know about adding all of Angel, just because I personally found it really difficult to get through the first time I watched it. Somewhere in season three I just stopped caring and didn't pick up again until another viewing of Buffy prompted me to. (Btw, Buffy is completely my number-one choice for this list.)
I would, however, definitely recommend the episode where Angel is a puppet.
What a crap list. BSG and Sopranos should not be watched because of their unsatisfying final episodes? What the hell? But you're going to subject people to the last 2 seasons on Buffy, which were just painful to sit through? And let's hold off judgment on Lost till AFTER we see if it's final ep is satisfying or not.
Buffy, Freaks & Geeks, and Pushing Daisies...a 3-way tie for most. Overrated. Shows. EVER!
I would have to watch Are You Being Served?, no matter how many times I watch them I still laugh.
Also Dr. Who, Fawlty Towers, Pushing Daisies.
Fawlty Towers. You'd die laughing.
I would watch Carl Sagan's Cosmos once more. A great way to appreciate the world we live in before we have to say goodbye. Also, I would watch every episode of Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Always look on the bright side of death... Apart from that, I agree with the recommendations of Buffy, Angel, B5 and Firefly and share the hate for the ridiculous BSG finale. And I'd like to add The Prisoner and Nowhere Man to the recommendations.
The Oxford New English Dictionary defines "idiot" as "someone who dislikes something Dave happens to like". Who knew?
FARSCAPE! And Arrested Development and Dead Like Me (for practice). And maybe HIMYM, depending on how the rest of that series goes.
You should definitely have put Arrested Development on this list, the best comedy ever. I would want to spend my final hours with the Bluths for sure.
A big yes to Veronica Mars (and not even just for entertainment value). Though it did have its low moments, VM had a well-woven, smart, satisfying run-- with the exception of its lack of closure.
Yeah, if you're going to include Buffy despite the last two seasons, but punt BSG because of a weak finale...
I would easily sign off on "WB seasons of Buffy; watch the musical as a non-canon episode. Also, skip "Amends"."
Roswell for me suffers the same problem as Heroes - a good-to-great first season followed by seasons of stupid.
Where the hell is Farscape?
My five:
Stargate SG-1
Firefly
Babylon 5
Farscape
X-Files
...much as it hurts me to leave off Star Trek, I can't pick one of the series.
Battlestar Galactica was superb from beginning to end, if only because it was ended on the creative teams terms. "We went out on our terms" it makes perfect sense for this list. Doesn't matter if you liked it or not.
The Wire (skip the whole season on the docks of Baltimore), True Blood, and Oz...Throw in Boston Legal to lighten the mood.
How could you skip season 2? Love Ziggy and Frank. But to add a few more:
Generation Kill
Firefly
Deadwood
Damages
Sons of Anarchy
and Summer Heights High
FARSCAPE! Best. Show. Ever!
Second best show ever: Joan of Arcadia. Every single episode of Season One was pure gold.
Third Best Ever: The Avengers. Awesome.
Pretty much all the classic Britcoms:
Blackadder
Red Dwarf
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python (TV & Movies)
Absolutely Fabulous
Are You Being Served?
Jonathon Creek (not a comedy, but a mystery solver well worth watching!)
Arrested Development should be on this list.
I have no shame. I want comfort on my deathbed.
Yes, I'll watch Arrested Development and Freaks and Geeks, but I'm also going to watch Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Golden Girls, Friends, and The Brady Bunch.
That should keep me alive for awhile, right?
Whoops, Jenn, 'twas Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell in Quantum Leap. Still a great show.
And after reading the other suggestions, I have to add to my original list:
Red Dwarf
Arrested Development
The Avengers
Jonathan Creek
And how about Barney Miller and the old Bob Newhart show?
Off the top of my head of shows to watch, like many others have said, Babylon 5. That was an excellent and well plotted scifi drama to watch. As for others (like Davey) saying that BSG had a great ending, well i'd like to know what they were smoking; nBSG started out really good and was for the first two series. But it started going downhill in S3 (settling on New Caprica was where IMO things started to go wrong) and S4 went from bad to worse. The fucking was a fucking travesty and absurd amongst other things. Don't get me started on the blatant retcons that RDM introduced such as the "Final Five" and "Cylon" Earth, violating his own cannon.
Now as to other shows to watch:
"Life on Mars"-The BBC original was excellent but the ending was a real downer. Unusually the US remake was very good and unlike the original it had a more upbeat and positive end (plus Harvey Keitel as Gene Hunt rocked, I hope does choose to do more TV acting).
"Stargate SG-1" overall an excellent series to watch.
"Farscape" All four series plus the "Peacekeeper Wars" mini-series.
"VR5" This was an excellent show that sadly only had 13 episodes filmed before it was cancelled by those morons at Fox. It starred David MacCallum and the grossly under-rated Lori Singer.
"Space: Above and Beyond"
I'd add the three seasons of "Friday Night Lights" as a must-watch before you die. In fact, if Tim Riggins' gorgeous face and body is the last thing I see on this earth, I'd be a happy camper.
And I second all of the votes for "Firefly".
West Wing, west wing, west wing! Seen every season 3 times and would watch them all again before death. On that note thank you for mentioning Sports Night. Nobody seems to remember that show and it was fabulous! But what about the really fun stuff? Season 3 of Boston Legal? The early seasons of Ally McBeal before it got redundant? Short but sweet Studio 60 on Sunset Strip? Scrubs!?!? Though a diehard Lost fan I wouldn't get invested in it before death either. It would get way too confusing if you started thinking about where death might take you. And last but not least I'd give myself the dying gift of rewatching the Unusuals which should have been given a better run. Rest in peace!
Surprised to see anyone knocking BSG as a whole because of the way the series ended. I don't recall hearing anything bad about the series as a whole while it was still airing?
The ending was fine, especially given what came before it. Im not sure what kind of ending would satisfy some people. The only problem was with the coda, and I just pretend that bit doesn't exist.
My picks re: topic are Farscape and The Wire. Two of the absolute best. First couple seasons of Rescue Me.
Disagree that Buffy's ending was satisfying. It was boring/predictable and only a few episodes before the rape metaphor for what Buffy was doing became a female empowerment message.
Nother great ending not mentioned is the Shield. What a satisfying ending for Vic Mackey and the Strike team.
How can you not mention Pushing Daisies?! It's like my ultimate mood lifter, I watch it when I'm down and without fail it picks me right up.
Same with Wonderfalls. And they're both very short series (poor Bryan Fuller...) so you're more than likely to finish it.
Doctor Who is just plain fun! Adventures through time and space!
I like your shows to watch list but I have to disagree with your don't watch list, mainly Sex and the City. I mean, when death is near, I think something fun and vapid is quite preferable. And it's a fantasy too! No way can a journalist afford all those fabulous things!
In South Africa we do not get all the great series listed here. I also totally support the BBC comedies and one of my old faves, Northern Exposure - didn't see it one anyone else's list.
Lo, O/T but RE: American Dreams--I heard there's talk between Jonathan Prince (exec producer) and Universal for all three seasons released on DVD (as in, together and with the alternate, in-the-future ending we never got to see [eight minutes that should've at least been a two-hour TV movie, but whatevs]) and a syndication deal. The fan club website, in conjunction with Prince, was requesting emails for him to forward to Universal saying that we want the dvds and how much we loved the show/what it meant to us, and so on, so you might want to look into it. In the meantime, if you don't have seasons 2 and 3 at all, you can always buy the bootlegs or download them online. I had most of season 3 on VHS but none of season 2 until I got them from some place in Canada. It's not the best method, of course, but it allows me to have my bi-annual American Dreams marathons which cleanses my psyche after all the crime shows and depressing stuff on tv.
Um, Spaced? Only 6 hours in total, but you'll die laughing.
How did get Grey's Anatomy on the Not-watch list? Just skip the Gizzie episodes and you'll have an awesome time. And even if you don't find it to be quality television, McDreamy will be the last thing you see!
I also vote for Doctor Who. But I'm going to add Newsradio just because it still makes me laugh.
WONDERFALLS!!
And I second or third Veronica Mars.
true Blood should have being the first under shows to watch. However True Blood should the show to watch before you die.
Firefly!
Also Friends and Gilmore Girls -- but only the first five seasons of GG.
I totally agree with Buffy -- that was my one true love in middle & high schools.
Also: Pushing Daisies, My So-Called Life, and Quantum Leap.
And for sheer comedic and entertainment value, Greg the Bunny.
Jenn, thanks: I just recently came across the news that Prince was assembling seasons 2/3 dvd set. Fingers crossed. As it was, it lacked some closure, so you'd definitely want the never-aired epilogue if you're watching under the circumstances we're talking about.
Paul, for me what's so great about Spaced and why it'd be probably make my shortlist, is not only is it hilarious but also the friendship between Daisy, Tim, Mike, Marsha, and, yes, even Twist (and Colin) that makes it appropriate for discussion.
If we're talking about comfort before you go, Cheers/Frasier/Wings fit the bill for me. I find them very "homey." While I LOVE Seinfeld, it's just too misanthropic for the end of days.
And I never got why people are so down on s2 of The Wire. All The Pieces Matter! Not only is Frank Sobotka awesome, but it introduces the Greek and Beatie to the mix. The Barksdale stuff may be more background, but there's still movement on that storyline.
Completely agreed!
I'd add DEAD LIKE ME, SIX FEET UNDER, and 30 ROCK.
Veronica Mars - the first 2 seasons must go together.
Smallville (the 4th season; the 'worst' year is a great guilty pleasure)
Pushing Daisies and Buffy, of course, and Psych...yes, the little known James Roday show is hilarious and I'd want that to be the show I watch.
I second Titus and Newsradio.
I'll add another one that no one seems to have mentioned - Ken Burns' "The Civil War."
There's something about the final moments of that that's always so terribly sad, and yet filled with hope.
It never got any love from TWOP, but Boston Legal is the only show that I own every season of on DVD. I loved it from beginning until it's amazing final season, and would totally watch it on my deathbed.
Haven't read all the messages to see if anyone else said it already, but my pick would be Six Feet Under! Best show ever!!
I'm happy to see some awesome shows in the watch category (Buffy and the West Wing are amazing), but I have to say that while you were trying to not be biased by placing to Aaron Sorkin shows on the list, but Sports Night deserved to be on it. And, I can't believe Friday Night Lights and Veronica Mars weren't up there. Or any of Bryan Fuller's masterpieces. Now my only real problem is that you said not to watch BSG. And while it might be bleak, and while the finale pissed me off for a few reasons (mostly lee/kara related) the show is definitely one that needs to be seen before you die. I don't care why you think its not so. Because it's just THAT good. And to think you put it in the same category as HEROES, GREY'S and SEX AND THE CITY? You should be ASHAMED.
Here are the shows I'd watch on my way out:
Freaks and Geeks
OZ
Homicide: Life on the Streets
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Robot Chicken
Criminal Minds
Alias
I Love Lucy
Quantum Leap
Venture Brothers
Pinky and the Brain
Whoops, almost forgot Buffy, Angel and Veronica Mars!
Ooh, Dave, Psych is a good one! Talk about good, silly fun. (Not to diminish the quality of the show...I imagine it's not too easy to keep "silly" from becoming ridiculous.)
There's no [frakking] way you can put Lost on there before it's conclusion (which could easily be unfulfilling and contrived and is certainly not *guranteed* to be great) and still bag on BSG. I get it. your whole website hated the ending. Get OVER IT. It's still one of the best series ever on television. To put it in the company of the completely-off-the-rails Heroes is just plain wrong!
Gotta disagree with the SATC slam, Telefile, you're just complaining because the times caught up with the show. You youngsters don't remember how fresh and unusual the show was in its first few years - single career women who had fun and didn't hate themselves for not being married, who talked about sex, who broke rules, went to great parties, etc. By the way, the series also glamorized New York back in the 90s when it was just coming out of the recession. Okay I'm off to sit in my rocker and play the ukelele.
Supernatural. And make sure you get salted and burnt once you're dead.
Your blog is very nice. In this post you have added about lot of shows. These all shows are very famous and popular. That is very nice post. I want to suggest you that you also write in your blog about Eli Stone episodes. this is my favorite show. so that I am asking you for that.
All of star trek (or if you only have time for one series, then The Next Generation, or Voyager, skip Deep Space Nine and Enterprise if you're short on time)
Dead Like Me
Buffy
Angel
Firefly
True Blood
Dollhouse
Heroes
Supernatural
Saving Grace
Six Feet Under (watch the torture scene, the show's not complete without it, even if it is disturbingly graphic)
Battlestar Galactica (you could never find a better show for... existential contemplation, PLUS killer robots in hot chicks' bodies)
Dr Who (the new ones - personally loved Eccleston Doc, Tenant was okay)
And that's all i can think of from mine for the mo...
p.s. avoid the Dead Like Me movie... you may die wondering what happened to them all in the end, but the movie's not worth knowing... i promise you...
