When we first heard that Steven Seagal was a deputized police officer in New Orleans, we were amused. When we heard someone was going to make a reality series out of it, we were baffled. When the thing actually happened, we were like, "Okay, somebody's messing with us, right?" But no, a series titled Steven Seagal: Lawman will air starting this December on A&E, which used to stand for "Arts and Entertainment." The network seems to have shed such a narrow definition for their content, however, as the trailer for SSL looks like a very special episode of Cops. There's already been a lawsuit filed against A&E by two producers who are seeking credit and compensation, but if we were them we would stay far, far away from this thing, because it just seems like a bad idea. Actor, singer and martial artist Steven Seagal enforcing the law? Here are a few reasons why this might be a mistake.
He's played a cop before.
In fact, he's played a lot of cops. And if there was an award given out to cops for "most humane" treatment of suspects, Seagal would get the opposite of that award. Most of his movies cast him as a lawman out for revenge for the murder or attempted murder of his friend or partner or family, and he then proceeds to kill or beat up half of whatever city he lives in to find the guy who did it. In Out for Justice, his captain actually gives him an unmarked car and a shotgun, and turns him loose in New York. Granted, we doubt Seagal is allowed to carry a real gun on the show, but the man can kill with a pool cue, a corkscrew, you name it, which means he's lethal in most bars and a high percentage of rumpus rooms.
He's not exactly a role model.
Pistol Whipped. Out for a Kill. Above the Law. Driven to Kill. These are just a few of the names of films Seagal has appeared in, and he's played vigilantes, car thieves and assassins-for hire in others. Hell, in most of his movies, the bad guy (or one of his henchmen) is a crooked cop himself! So not only does he play criminals, he has gone above and beyond in his depiction of police officers as being corrupt. How is anyone going to take him seriously when he pulls them over for a busted taillight?
He will do anything for a buck.
Not only does the man have his own line of collectable knives, he also has an energy drink called "Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt" and an aftershave called "Scent of Action." We're not saying he'll take a bribe, but who's to say that he won't be swayed to cut a suspect a break if he sees an empty bottle of Lightning in the car, or catches a whiff of Action? He's not going to throw a paying customer in the clink. Carrying a concealed knife can be an arrestable offense, but what if it's the Steven Seagal Edition? His signature's on that bad boy, so how can it also be on an arrest report?
The dude is 57 years old.
The retirement age for police officers can vary. Early retirement with partial benefits is common, and even if it's not taken, many older officers accept the benefits of their experience and take less active jobs around the precinct -- preferably ones that don't require them to drive at night or pursue suspects on foot. At 57, Seagal is probably one of the older men on patrol in Jefferson Parish, and he certainly looks it in the trailer, wearing glasses and appearing confused as the driver of his patrol car whips them into a high-speed turn. You have stunt doubles handling your fighting on film, Steven -- are you really that desperate for a little action?
Will you watch Steven Seagal: Lawman? And if so, what was the last Seagal film you saw?

Not to mention he isn't exactly known for being good to women. He has a reputation for domestic abuse-whether true or not, doesn't exactly make an accused abuser respect his authority.
No, I won't watch it. The last movie I willingly watched with him in it was Executive Decision and the only reason I've seen it more than once (I love it) is knowing he dies very early on.
Hell yes I will watch this! How could you not?
And this year's Jack Bauer award for upholding the spirit of Miranda v. Arizona goes to ...
I really can't wait to see this show, I have been a fan of his for years. He also want to helps with the environment and pollution of our earth. I believe he is a Good guy, His movies in the past couple of year haven't been great, but I don't see anything wrong with exploring other options.
People are filing lawsuits because they wish to get credit for this?
I'd be filing a lawsuit to get my name taken off.
This is going to be awesome, and I WILL watch it!
yes i will watch the series steven seagal lawman the last movie was driven to kill
Back up the trolley! I thought this was a parody!
Segal is the man no matter what he does. My life his similar to his in the aspect that Im not a famous actor. I too started studyig Aikido at the age of seven and also started playing the guitar at eight. Only in a parralel universe. Im only 33 and it was total coincidence how our lives are similar. Hey Sensei Segal can you get me up in your next movie I can execute a mean kotegeishi or yonkyo or sankyo etc. on all your punk (Seagal haters). Walk in peace my brother. Seagal is the only man capable of retiring at 97 if still alive; to the guy who has a problem with him being 57.
I hope Seagal kills or at least break the bones of some arrogant gangbangers. Steven Seagal is so tough, he makes chuck norris cry in his sleep.
Actors act. He is an actor first. He may have been deputized but he is still just an actor. I guess he must really need the publicity. It will be interesting to see how he handles situations though.
I always liked the guy I'm looking forward to watch the show.
well this is either going to be a monumental train wreck or a work of unparalleled genius....but either way it will be compulsive viewing!!! lol!
@ Zach Oat
After reading your post, I have come to the conclusion that facts mean nothing to you.
So let me give you some facts about Deputy Chief Seagal.
He is a licensed Law Enforcement officer, and has been for 23 years.
He has been a deputy for the Jefferson Parish Sheriffs office for 20 years, he currently holds the title and rank of Deputy Chief!
He has been instrumental in training the Swat team for years.
At 57 years of age, I am positive that he wouldn't break a sweat beat kicking your but.
While having been a licensed law enforcement officer, he has made it a point to stay under the radar screen.
As for your remark about willing to do anything for a buck, he donates more money in one year, than you will make in a life time!
Now I could go on about how many mistakes you made in your uneducated comments, but I hope you get my point.
If you are going to post something such as this, at least try to understand the difference between a Deputy Police man, and a Deputy Sheriff!
Your all suck at spellling!!!!! This show gona suck!!!! Like yur spellling!!!!
i think its a good idea he can put one city in order and then move on to another all ya all haters can hate on but i think hes the hotest in the last 5 yrs
Right on Seagal. None of these personal opinions mean a darn thing!! He's the man!! And he has made plenty of money so someone must have liked him. Keep on going to work 9-5, and see if you will ever have his money and his fame. Haters, just haters!!
I wonder about a situation where a suspect might not believe (justifiably so?) he is really a police officer. If I didn't know about the "Lawman" show, & was pulled over by ACTOR Steven Seagal along with the film crew, get the idea? I might not believe it, at 1st anyway. I mean, who is gonna pop out & make an arrest, next? Chuck Norris? Will David Caruso be investigating? I could foresee, (& again, justifiably?) an altercation or at least a situation arise over disbelief in Seagal's official status. You know? "Come on man! Get the @$ outta here! Steven Seagal! YOU ain't no cop!". A person could very well think it was some reality TV "Candid Camera" or "Punked" type of thing or a practical joke, etc. Then what? Charge them with resisting arrest (of in their minds, an "actor")? Also, there could very likely be at least 1 idiot wanting to "test" Seagal to see how tough he really is. & don't even get me started regarding the implications if even the slightest hint of "excessive force" allegations were filed against him. Or god forbid, worst case scenario, what if there was a situation where he HAD to use his firearm? There are several ways Seagal can help out with law enforcement. Donations, appearances, Public service announcements, etc, or even being a "desk jockey". I don't think being a street cop is in the best interest of public or Steven Seagal.
The number of opera houses around the world and the high attendance rates show that opera an art form that is more popular than ever.
