Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical when I heard that Brian Boitano was doing a show on the Food Network, even though said program was called What Would Brian Boitano Make?. Why would an Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater think he could host a cooking show? Then I actually watched (it debuted over the weekend in some horrible mid-day timeslot) and it won me over. Mostly because of Brian's quirky personality (which is different than most of the other FN hosts) and because they use the "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" song (from South Park) as the theme song.
Brian's clearly just having a good time making this show out of his house in San Francisco, and while there's nothing actually new about his hosting style, seeing someone not known for their food knowledge in the kitchen is an interesting twist. Frankly, I'm glad he ended up doing this instead of Dancing With the Stars (though he'd kick ASS on that show).
The theme of the premiere was that Brian was trying to fix up his single friend with the ladies (playing cupid is his self-proclaimed third favorite thing to do after figure skating and riding bicycles on rainbows). He goofily called in some favors in order to get some girls over, and innuendoed that his goal was to help Tony get laid ladies. Whatever, I'm not sure I care about that so much as the fact that he made a Mar-Tony (with little cut out pictures of his friend's head on the swizzle-sticks) and said "Abracadamn!" while stirring up ingredients in a blender. He also used a Slap Chop (even he's a sucker for an infomercial, apparently) and said cheesy things like "my mother from another grandmother." He also dressed up as Hugh Hefner, and used old-timey film stock in order to give out his little tips for cooking. It's silly and ridiculous and not the best way to learn to cook, but still a nice way to spend a half an hour.
Now if they could just find a way to tone down the annoying music, this show could be my new weekend addiction. But the tunes were strange and really, really, really too loud and distracting. It should be a TV volume, not loud enough to fill up an entire ice skating arena.
Did you watch? (If not, catch this behind-the-scenes look.) Did you enjoy or hate Boitano's shtick? Sound off below.

I caught the show this weekend and really enjoyed it. It was a nice change from the usual Food Network shows. I'll chortle at the geeky food jokes on the other shows, but Brian Boitano was laugh-out-loud funny.
The food looked good too and not too difficult to prepare.
I watched it, too, and really enjoyed it. Now, I just need to remember when it is on.
I saw the program and thought it was rather silly.
I watched and actually laughed out loud at some of the crazy stupid jokes. It was pretty refreshing approach. Brian has a great personality that goes well with the off-beat angle of the show.
Will definitely set this to record on my DVR.
Can't wait to see what he does next!
I thought the show was great, i loved his personality, his house, and his cooking. I will look forward to watching him weekly.
Stumbled across this and I was pleasantly entertained! just the right amount of cheese!
I was sure I would NOT like this show. But, it was hilarious! Who would have thought?
I thought it was great! Especially when he took the vanilla bean and made it into a mustache! It was hilarious!
It was a wonderfully fun show and I can't wait for the next one. Brian Boitano speaks well and gives decent instuctions and I really like most of his recipes.
I also saw this and it was FUN! I intend to watch again this weekend- hope he keeps it just as entertaining!
I really enjoyed the show, cheezie jokes and all. Brian has a great personality and I like that it's in his own kitchen. Most Food Network shows are soooo cookie cutter but this one is a refreshing change.
I plan on making a couple of the things this weekend they looked that good! The instructions are easy to follow and the ingredients are easy to find. Most I already have.
I loved the show. Brian's style is warm and open and the food looked great. I'll be watching all of his shows.
With all the talented chefs that have trained years and years and would kill to be on the food network, they hire a professional skater? I bet if he wasnt gay they wouldnt give him a second look. Food network is becoming a joke and insulting to real Chefs!!
