Bored to Death is... Terribly Disappointing

Bored to Death is... Terribly Disappointing It certainly could get better, as I've only watched last night's pilot episode so far, and pilots generally mean very little, but man, that was so disappointing. I wanted to love it so much, based on the cast alone -- Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson -- and I even like the author the show is loosely based on, Jonathan Ames, perfectly fine. But this pilot was awful.

Schwartzman just looked like he was drowning in the self-satisfied hipster writing, and I actually have a pretty high tolerance for self-satisfied hipster writing. But this thing is just so egregiously Brooklyn, so desperately quirky, and it finds itself so effing clever I can't stand it. "What are you, another self-hating New York Jew?" "I guess I am, yeah." Cue smirk! That's a real exchange that happened in the pilot, and it's just exactly the kind of precious ironic self-awareness that was rampant throughout the episode, and that there is just way too much of in the world. It was like a damn Animal Collective record playing in Dave Eggers' pirate supply store. It's too much! There's only so much hipster I can take!

So I hated it and I have no desire to sugarcoat that, but the show's not hopeless, and it wasn't without its bright spots. Ted Danson was awesome as the wealthy asshole he's grown so adroit at playing, and certainly more of man whore Zach Galifianakis could boost things in future episodes. The writing will also settle in, I'm sure, and be less ridiculous (hopefully) as the series evolves and everybody grows into their roles. I'm giving it three more episodes, just because I feel I owe it to the cast, but if it's not better by then I'm just chalking it up to so not my thing.
