This past weekend the Emmys handed out a large bulk of their awards during the Creative Arts ceremony, aka the Schmemmys (thank you, Kathy Griffin!). She was on hand to host the night, which means that they must have forgiven her for her "Suck it, Jesus" acceptance speech a few years back. Anyway, while I'm sort of dreading the predictability that is likely to unfold Sunday evening, at least the Creative Arts had a few pleasant surprises. Read on for the highlights.
Pushing Daisies won two well-deserved awards (for art direction and makeup) for the "Dim Sum Lose Some" award and costumes for "Buzzzzzzzzz!" I'm glad it's getting awards, and an Emmy is an Emmy, right?
Dramatic guest stars Ellen Burstyn and Michael J. Fox took home trophies for their stints on Law & Order: SVU and Rescue Me, respectively. But the Comedy guests were where the surprises really started. Tina Fey racked up yet another trophy, not for 30 Rock, but for playing her doppelganger Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. She deserves it, for nailing a spot-on parody filled with "You Betchas" and finger guns. (Watch the video below to see it again!) If our predictions are correct, she'll get another acting trophy on Sunday for her day job. That's a pretty good week.
SNL's frequent guest Justin Timberlake also got a trophy for his goofing around, as he does in the "Motherlover" video below. Maybe this will encourage him to make another guest host appearance. Soon?

The boring Adam and Eve/Silence dance that Tyce Diorio choreographed won for So You Think You Can Dance, tied with Hugh Jackman's song and dance number "Musicals are Back" from the Oscars. I'm glad that SYTYCD won something, but that was far from my favorite dance of Season 4. Also, South Park's "Margaritaville" episode, which took on the recession and economic woes in its own unique way, took home yet another Emmy for the show. Parker and Stone must just have a wall full of them now.
Hostess Kathy Griffin's reality series didn't win this year, instead Intervention took home the trophy. Normally I'd be sad, because she's pretty hysterical and I love her show, but this just gives her more to rant about in her stand-up and during next season, so it could actually work to our benefit.
The happiest announcement though (at least for me) had to be that internet sensation Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was awarded the prize for Special Class -- Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program. That's a mouthful, and is probably in really teeny print on the actual trophies, but it's pretty cool that a web series basically birthed out of writers' strike downtime actually garnered an Emmy award. You'll want to watch it now, if you haven't yet. Trust me.
Your thoughts? Are you happy, upset about the wins? Sound off below.
