It's time for a new Saturday Night Live season to start up, which among other things means we have to deal with who got canned and replaced for the next season. This year the casualties are relatively light, as we're only losing Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins (and not Bobby Moynihan, apparently, though we should), but it's always sad when these things happen. Remember Jerry Minor? Probably not, but I miss that guy! Anyway, in the wake of this (semi) tragedy, let's review where these ladies may have gone wrong, shall we?
Casey Wilson is a weird situation because when I heard she got canned I was all outraged but when I went to look for clips of her to support my claims that she is awesome I couldn't find anything decent, and then I remembered that awful Katy Perry parody she did that reran last weekend, and just realized -- maybe she's just been terrible this entire time and I somehow overlooked it? That never happens, but I can't remember one single thing she ever did that I really loved. I guess she's more likeable and relatable than hysterically funny. But at any rate, she wrote Bride Wars, and that made a little money (despite utterly brutal reviews), so hopefully she has some chick flick penning job security. I did find this sketch, which she did some decent work in, though. It wasn't earth-shattering, but it was fine. They've got their whole lives behind them!
Michaela Watkins, on the other hand, seems like an odd firing to me. She was an awkward fit at times, but she's clearly talented. Her Hoda contributions were exquisite straight-man performances, and though it wasn't the most popular thing in the world, I personally loved that bitchpleeze.com blogger character. Probably because I too spend my days being a troll-like bitchy blogger and see myself in this girl a lot more than I'd care to admit. But if nothing else, it's a dead-on depiction of people in this profession:
Hopefully Lorne really meant what she claims he said to her about deserving her own sitcom. She's great. For now, though, I'm pulling for the two new girls, Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad. I've actually seen Jenny perform in NYC, and she's absolutely hilarious. Hopefully the show doesn't get in her way and let's her be great. Sadly, that's not always a guarantee, no matter how talented you are.
How are you feeling about the firings? Betrayed? Bewildered? High-fiving Lorne? Talk about it below.

I am STILL years later sad they fired Finesse Mitchell.
This means no more cougars. This means no more Cameron Diaz dropping in as the way more successful foreign cougar. This makes me sad.
The problem with Casey Wilson was that she didn't really live up to her potential. In one of her first shows, she did a sketch as a quadriplegic stripper that was hilarious. And unfortunately, she wasn't in another sketch that was even nearly as funny. That Katy Perry bit was as close as she ever came. Frankly, I'm not surprised that she got the pink slip.
Now, Michaela Watkins, on the other hand, was a solid entertainer, and just flat-out funny. She even had a great recurring bit as Hoda Kotyb, playing the straight man to Kristin Wiig's whacked-out Kathy Lee Gifford. And this was just her first year! Frankly, I'm surprised she wasn't pushed to the main cast this year. How they could ditch her and keep Bobby Monighan is beyond me.
And I agree, Heather, Their cutting Finesse was a crying shame, too.
I've never liked Casey Wilson much, and I definitely agree that Bobby Moynihan should be gone.
I don't understand why they'd get rid of Michaela Watkins, who is really great as Hoda, but keep Abby Elliot who doesn't ever even seem to do anything.
Also, I know Darrell Hammond is the token old guy and can do a million impressions, but I really think it's time for him to be moving on to make room for some new blood.
Unfortunity it seems to me they got canned for two younger hotter girls. Casey got too fat, and Michaela too homely. They never really got enough air time to shine.
couldn't agree more with the MAD MAPLE...michaela watkins was the perfect addition to the SNL cast. she could've helped take the show to new levels of hilarity. casey wilson should never have been hired in the first place...the girl is sweet but not funny. bobby should be long-gone along with keenan "the face-maker" thompson. but, afterall, lorne michaels is the captain so he makes the calls...but, he also has to go down with his ship!
I agree with most of what is said except that I think Michaela is very attractive. Bobby whatever his name is rides. Bitch, please.
Wow, you guys are Bobby Haters! I am surprised! It's not your fault, he's still new to a lot of you. Besides being a favorite at Upright Citizen's Brigade, Bobby is actually a devoted, life-long student of SNL, and has written a lot of good sketches that he either barely appeared in, or wrote for others. Does anyone remember the "Single Ladies" Parody? *BOBBY* WROTE IT WITH ANDY. So don't diss this dude, you have no idea what SNL would lose without him...
I agree with Sulya and run the Bobby Moynihan blog (bobbymoynihan.blogspot.com). Bobby has Andy Samberg's humor (demonstrated by the Optimus Prime bit last week), he's the best audience member for the monologues, and he nailed some funny bits (Snagglepuss, his Mark Payne character, Single Ladies). Plus as Sulya said, he's a key writer and has been writing for SNL before he came on the show. That said, they promoted Abby to a regular cast member and not Bobby. Abby has actually been successful with her impressions, and her Angelina Jolie impression got a lot of buzz.
I think they let Michaela go because she really couldn't do anything that Kristen couldn't do better. So she was mostly just useful when Kristen was already in a skit. It's not against her talents. As Lorne said, it's more about cast dynamics and filling the empty holes.
Marion, Darrell Hammond has left SNL, so you were right about that one.
Mike, it isn't about weight or beauty. That would be a double-standard, cuz it's not about looks or weight with the dudes. So it's just a coincidence that your opinions meshed with the firings.
I'm glad they cut Finesse. He's the world's best comedian, but he didn't have the characters to pull through on SNL (or the will to fight for his ideas).
I despised Cougars. Totally for chicks.
And I agree that Kenan "the face" Thompson should go. I think he's just around for his faces, his black-man impressions, and his cult following. This week's promo with Ryan Reynolds is proof that Kenan isn't funny.

The Animation Empire: Wow. I've never heard anyone defend Bobby Moynihan before. Now do Stalin.
I always had a crush on Casey Wilson. She did a lot of great supporting work, but she rarely got the chance to carry anything herself. But she was always likeable and relatable and cute as hell. I always loved seeing her, and I miss her bitterly
The onlt funny segments on teh show seem to be the Sandberg digital shorts. IMO
Michaela Watkins was great in every sketch. Never dropped the ball. Abby Elliot has yet to make me laugh. Worse, she does tired one-note celebrity impressions and adds nothing new - given her one facial expression.
Jenny Slate's Jersey sketch was embarrassingly bad. I guess they're going for pretty over funny, and that's a huge disservice to all the funny women out there.
