While we've been hearing for months about all of the very special guest judges who are taking on the audition rounds (from Neil Patrick Harris to Katy Perry and everyone in between), the looming question has been if anyone would take over the fourth seat vacated by Paula Abdul on a permanent basis. Well, we now have an answer: Yes, Ellen DeGeneres. Hiring the popular daytime talk show host and comedian instead of any of the music industy vets we had hoped for could be a stroke of genius -- or it could spell disaster for TV's top-rated program. We've weighed the pros and cons of Idol's newest judge.
Pro: She's not crazy
We loved Paula and her wacky nonsensical commentary, but it might be a refreshing change of pace to have someone who isn't sipping strange substances out of her Coca-Cola cup and slurring her speech attempting to give constructive criticism to the wannabes.
Con: She's not crazy
Paula's unpredictability was half of the fun of the show. Scholars could spend decades trying to figure out what she meant by certain comments. Having someone like Ellen might eliminate the wacky magic.
Pro: She likes to dance
Ellen's talk-show shtick is her lame dance moves, while we always enjoyed watching Paula sway obliviously along to the music like she wasn't actually working. We expect Ellen to continue in this grand tradition.
Con: She knows nothing about music
Ellen may have a DJ on her show and like to boogie, but she's not in the music industry at all. She's not a record producer or a former artist or even a Broadway star -- she's just a famous person with opinions and we've already got Randy (who is useless) and Kara (who is also useless) on the panel. Simon can't be the only one who actually gives honest and informed critiques.
Pro: She may finally put a stop to the weird gay comments between Simon and Seacrest Since she is out and proud, she might take offense to the annoying innuendo-filled banter between Simon and Ryan about who is really gay. We'd be thrilled if she was able to make that inanity end.
Con: We won't have to watch awkward flirting/fighting with Simon
Paula and Simon had one of the most bizarre relationships on television and that's something that Ellen won't be able to recreate. She's not interested in Simon sexually, so there won't be any tabloid fodder about a secret relationship, and there won't be that playful "I hate you" stuff going on, either, unless Ellen is able to channel her inner third grader.
Pro: She'll add some humor to the dull repetitiveness of Randy/Kara
We're hoping that she'll acknowledge her lack of music expertise and just go for the funny (like she did as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance last summer). Cracking jokes about costumes or her fellow judges or the particular theme of the week could lighten things up on the judging panel. And it will be better than just saying "pitchy" and "package artist" over and over again.
Con: Her comments will be irrelevant
Is anyone in America really going to give weight to Ellen's opinion over Simon's? Even if she tries to give a critique instead of making a funny remark, will she actually influence votes?
Pro: She's used to having a show and understands being succinct
Hopefully she'll be able to gather her thoughts (or her writers will help her pre-plan some jokes) so that she can deliver her line and not ramble on for 20 minutes, causing the live show to go way over schedule. She's a TV pro with ample hosting experience and is used to getting right to the point. Maybe she can even give Seacrest some tips.
Con: She might not be mean
Paula was always way, way too nice, but the last thing this judging panel really needs is another person to be sensitive to the talentless. Ellen might be afraid of hurting the feelings of the wannabes and resort to making a kind comment instead of using some biting wit to tell them what she really thinks. Can you imagine Kathy Griffin telling these contestants what they are doing wrong? That'd be awesome, and we just don't think Ellen has it in her.
Pro: She might help ratings
Clearly, the reason that producers hired her was because Ellen's a recognizable household name and will be able to use her daily talk show to pimp Idol. Not that the AI juggernaut is desperate, but it has been slipping in the ratings in recent years, so Ellen could potentially reinvigorate and grow its audience.
Con: She's not Paula
Sorry, Ellen, but Paula is forever our girl. Watching Idol without her would be like SYTYCD without Mary Murphy screaming. Mabye we'll eventually warm up to someone new, but it's going to be an awkward transition period until we get there.
What do you think about Ellen joining the Idol judges? Great idea, or major mistake? Leave your comments below.

Horrible, horrible. they have jumped the shark
The judges are a joke anyway so why not get one who can tell actual jokes?
Go Ellen!
"She's knows nothing about music". And Abdul DOES???
Besides, just because Ellen Degeneres isn't known as a musician doesn't mean she's without knowledge of the subject. She does have her own talk show, after all, and is probably much more aware of trends and practices in the music industry than a lot of other people would be.
Ellen is also about as close to having a "real" person as a judge on that show as we'll ever see, short of having an actual radio contest winner be given the judge's chair for a day. I think it's a good move to have someone like her - who asks the questions we all want to know, says the things we're all thinking - on the panel. She will give that audience a voice.
I don't really care about Paula or ellen, but I'd love to get used to SYTYCD without Mary Murphy. I'm hoping Paula winds up there.
I can't believe Ellen would be interested in the job. And her comment "I've watched since the beginning [bold]and never missed a show"[/bold]? My opinion of her went way down.
Thank God Paula is gone. I love Ellen and will become a frequent viewer now.
While I was perfectly happy with Paula being gone, I think this is the dumbest move they've ever made. WTF?!
If AI was a competition that truly focused on the technical details of music, from the history of modern American recordings to the pitch/bass/tempo of the singers in relation to that, I would think that having Ellen as a permanent judge would be both stupid and insulting. However, the stupid and insulting thing would be PRETENDING that AI is anything more than a variable-standards talent show. I am quite confident that Ellen can combine humor and bluntness in saying what she does and doesn't like. Don't forget also that her presence will finally force Randy and Kara to maybe call on some of their music-industry experience, whatever the freaking hell that is.
I'm thrilled about this news. I've long since stopped watching anything other than the performances on idol. This hiring might actually get me to watch a full episode again. Well played, AI.
AMEN BROTHER BEN!!!! It doesn't matter who judges this thing.
I like Ellen a lot but I HATED her guest judging stint on SYTYCD. It was nothing but (clearly pre-written) jokes and the worst part was that the jokes weren't even good. They were awkward and cringe-worthy and she stuck out like a sore thumb. I don't even like AI but I still think replacing Paula with Ellen is a bad idea. What ever happened to Posh?! I was holding out hope for her and, despite my hatred for AI, would TOTALLY have tuned in if she had been Paula's replacement.
I have always taped the show and just fast-forwarded through Randy's, Kara's and Paula's comments. Now I can actually listen to one other judge's comments besides Simon! Although, I must say, Kathy Griffin would have ROCKED as a judge!!!
Time out. SYTYCD without Mary "Banshee" Murphy's screaming would be WONDERFUL. Just saying. Carry on.
"The moth who gets the cornflake shall win the melon."
You just can't make stuff like that up.
So long Paula.
"We won't have to watch awkward flirting/fighting with Simon."
That's a CON? Simon and Paula's shtick with the whispering and touching and the doodling was distracting and tiresome.
I think it's brilliant for a show that was originally about "America" choosing the winner to get a non "musical" person as a judge. She may say what America wants to be able to say. Sometimes it takes a non-musician to tell someone (I'm talking to you Adam Lambert) that they suck.
Really?? Do any of these judges know anything about what people really like. All Ellen has to say is, "that was a little "pitchy". Whatever that means, it seems to be the favorite comment. You don't have to be a musician to know if someone sounds bad and some of the people that they push through sound really bad. I'm just sayin'.
Kathy Griffin would actually make me watch this show. Ellen's not even that funny. I'll pass this year, same as always.
I was completely outraged when I first heard about this yesterday, but as time goes on, I care less and less. I'd prefer to hear professional comments on the singers, though. I have TWOP for hearing about the audience's opinions. I like Ellen, so there's a chance I'll warm up to her. My real issue is that this show certainly does not need four judges. I'm going to be really angry if this causes Americal Idol to go over constantly again this year, and messes up my DVR of the much better Glee. This show shouldn't be so much about the judges, anyway. We only need so many opinions about the singers.
WELL I GUESS THIS IS THE LAST AMERICAN IDOL SHOW. PAULA ABDUL WAS SO MUCH A PART THAT SHE KNEW HOW TO LET THE CONTESTANTS DOWN WITHOUT THEIR FEELING LIKE HELL. OH WELL, SOMETHING ELSE WILL TAKE THAT SPOT. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A TALENT SHOW NOT A COMEDY. WE HAVE ENOUGH COMMEDIANS NOW. I USED TO LOOK FORWARD TO A.I. BUT NOT NOW.
I love love love Ellen, but I want Paula back. AI won't be the same without her.
I am more upset and embarrassed about the fact there are people still watching this crap then I am about who is hosting it.
Nothing like spending audition week in your "big chair" making the kids get mamaw some treats while mamaw gets to make fun of the mentally ill and the mentally handicapped.Wow, that is entertainment!
As I've read elsewhere: American Idol, meet your Cousin Oliver.
I hate Paula as a judge, and love Ellen as a host/comedian/person... But I'm really not sure she'd be a good fit as a judge.
Would love for her to host the show though (or co-host with Seacrest, I guess... that would make him less annoying.)
I think having an opinion on Ellen's performance before the first episode airs is crazy premature. The fact is that we have never known AI without the base three (hee). She could bomb, or she could develop a judge role we didn't even know we were missing- the nice NON-CRAZY judge. At the very least, I'm willing to base judgement on her performance instead of my assumptions.
(Alright, fine- I'm glad she's coming on the show because Paula's untreated mental illness made me squirm through every episode.)
Oh groan ... her "look at me make jokes without saying anything useful!" schtick wore so thin on SYTYCD. I don't think I can sit through an entire season of that on AI.
If they wanted a comedienne, why not get one that is actually funny?
All I can say is they have lost a faithful viewer. Not a fan of Ellen and her "confused" comedy rap - its old and tired. I also turned off SYTYCD after the first couple of "jokes" from her. Pitiful.
I think Ben hit the mark...
Also, there is absolutely no need for a fourth judge--it's not as if they needed to fill time. That being said, I think the show jumped the shark when they added Kara last year.
I thought she sucked on SYTYCD, so I'm not pleased by this. Plus, crazy as she was, Paula was the only one who had ever been there as an singer/pop star. She's the only one who knows. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of Simon types, and we've already got all the simon we need.
I like Ellen. But this move is very "HUH?!" She's famous, but not famous for music at all. (Liking to dance doesn't count) Was there really no washed up, one hit wonders available to fill in? No old VJs, music critics or producers that could fill in? Even someone who was just a hangeron of music types like Jerry Hall or one of Rod Stewart's ex-wives? Someone MUSICAL?
Ellen would make sense as a judge on Last Comic Standing (if that ever comes back). But this just feels wrong.
Seems like a very odd choice. Think Kathy Griffin would be hilarious. Kathy like Paula, creates a wonderfully schizophrenic mood in the viewer - you can bounce back between loving her and hating her. (Maybe it's more of a David Caruso kind of vibe actually).
I don't think anyone who watches AI or SYTYCD religiously is actually qualified to say what passes for decent entertainment.
Ellen is funny, strong-minded and comes across as pretty nice and fair. I think that should play off Simon nicely.
"...is used to getting right to the point."
That is the funniest thing I've read all week.
What ever happened to Vitamin C? She would be perfect.
I tried to watch AI, but couldn't stomach Paula Abdul's bizarre behavior nor Randy's pointlessness. With Ellen on, I will give it another try.
I will not watch Idol without Paula, diss he all you want, but she added humor and sensitivity.
I will not watch Idol without Paula, diss her all you want, but she added humor and sensitivity.
I was all approval until you said Kathy Griffen. Now I find myself staring mournfully at the computer. If only...
Hey, subtle must be your mildde name. Great post!
