Katherine Heigl (who still thinks she can be a big movie star after The Ugly Truth) is taking a five-episode break from Grey's Anatomy in order to film the new Greg Berlanti movie Life As We Know It. Five episodes without any Izzie drama? That's like a dream come true. We'd love it if some of these supporting characters from other shows would also just give it a rest for five, ten or 15 episodes. Maybe when they return we'll realize how much we've missed them... or not.
1. Sylar (Heroes)
Sylar's a great creepy villain, and we pretty much adore all things Zachary Quinto, but frankly, we're burned out on the character at this point. We'd be thrilled if his personality would stay buried deep within its current Nathan shell for a good part of the season. Let another villain do nefarious deeds for a while -- after all, even Batman didn't fight the Joker every single week.
2. Thirteen (House)
Remy, Thirteen, Hadley, whatever. She's got as many names as Niki on Heroes, but sadly only one personality -- and we're not particularly fond of it. If Olivia Wilde decided to go take a break and star in some ridiculous horror movie screaming her head off while, say, her character disappeared south of the border for some experimental Huntington's treatment for a hunk of the season, it would be such a welcome change of pace.
3. Jenny (Gossip Girl)
Most of the time Jenny is far less irksome than her dopey brother Dan, so we'd ordinarily prefer that he go on some sort of soul-searching writer's retreat for a few months. However, the dynamic of the show is changing and all of the other characters are going to be in college, while Jenny's stuck reigning as Queen of Constance Billard. What a letdown it'll be for viewers to have to go from college life to a funkily dressed Jenny still dealing with high school issues. Can't she just do a semester or two abroad and we'll catch up with her post-graduation?
4. Dwight (The Office)
The thing about Dwight is that he's best in small doses and lately we've been overloaded with his strange antics and even stranger romantic entanglements. We think he needs to spend more time in the marketing of his beet farm's bed and breakfast, and in the meantime, Rainn Wilson can go make The Rocker 2, which we can completely ignore.
5.Charlotte (Private Practice)
Instead of taking this unlikable character, who used to just be a hospital chief of staff (unbelievable enough to begin with), and reducing her role, the producers integrated her even more into the show. They had her build a rival practice (in addition to her regular job), and have an on-again/off-again relationship with Cooper. Less, not more! We were so happy when she got canned from her private practice at the end of last season that we'd love for her to take a little time off to do some soul-searching. And we're sure that after this role, KaDee Strickland will have no problem landing a part in any rom-com as someone's annoying, naggy wife.
6. Kenneth (30 Rock)
He's adorable and appealing, but like Dwight, he's best appreciated in small doses -- otherwise his limited shtick gets very old and very tired very fast. Maybe Kenneth can take some time off to return home for a while and then find a way to come back with bizarre new stories to share. And don't worry, Jack McBrayer, we're sure there's a Judd Apatow movie out there somewhere with your name on it for you to film during your mandatory break. If not, there's always page duties at the real 30 Rock.
7. Tess (Smallville)
On a show about heroes and villains, it would be nice if the evildoers were actually ... evil. Just saying. Tess is too mild-mannered to really run LuthorCorp in the nefarious and exploitative ways that Lex or Lionel would have wanted, and with Zod heading to town, having Tess stick around is pretty much pointless, especially if she's not going to give in to the propositions of a naked Oliver. Send her off to run the international branch of LuthorCorp for a while and bring her back whenever a hot kickboxing fight is needed. There's a million bad TV shows filmed in Vancouver, so we're sure Cassidy Freeman can find something to do in her downtime.
8. Marshall (How I Met Your Mother)
Last season, Alyson Hannigan was out for a while on maternity leave and the show truly suffered without her, especially since there was more focus than ever on Lily's other half Marshall, and his work life. So now we're a little over him at the moment. Jason Segel's had some box office success, so let him take some cinematernity leave while we catch up on our fix of Lily, and then our little Marshmallow can return from whatever far-off location Goliath decided to ship him off to.
9. Topher (Dollhouse)
Topher seems to be one of those love him or hate him characters, and we're in the latter camp on this one. He's largely incompetent (he should have invented better security for the brain programming chips), and we really can't stand the way he treats his assistant Ivy. Since they've established that there are other Dollhouse locations, and this one could really use an overhaul, we'd love it if he got a temporary transfer out of there and let Ivy or another programmer step in for a while. He can come back on his birthday for his laser tag date with Sierra.
10. Morgan (Chuck)
With Awesome discovering Chuck's powers and earning the confidant spot and Jeffster! being so entertaining and filling the nerdy role there are a lot of other characters that can fill the Morgan void for a while. How long does Benihana training take? A couple months, right? Maybe by then we'll start missing this little geek, because we've seen an awful lot of his dating life and his Buy More hi-jinks lately. Too much, in fact. Joshua Gomez can either find a sidekick film role, or get really excellent at playing Call of Duty during his sabbatical.

Good article, though as much as it probably pains you to hear this but Heigl is a big movie star already. Despite the awful reviews Ugly Truth was a big hit. Almost $90 million in the US alone. On a $38 million budget and an R rated rom com thats pretty rare.
A pretty fair list all told, though personally Marshall is still good with me. Plus, if the problem was there was too much on him while Hannigan was away, the danger might be the reverse happening.
I could never stand Kenneth, and really hope he does take more of a back seat this year. His unfunny crap and supposedly adorable persona grates a lot and drags down an otherwise great show for me. Still, he is popular for some reason, so my hopes are probably in vain.
I'm in the Loving Topher camp, so I disagree with cutting his screen-time. I would prefer cutting Echo's screentime. I enjoyed her a lot more in Epitaph One. I wish Amy Acker weren't being cut down to recurring! But agree with all the rest. Also, If Annie on 90210 took a permanent sabbatical, I may be able to bring myself to watch it.
You'd get rid of Jenny... over Vanessa?
Okay, TWoP, enough with the Heigl bashing. We get it. Now it's just boring.
Dude...you want MARSHALL to go away??? But...but...he's Marshall and therefore awesome in every way! Frankly, I prefer the show with all of the characters there (as Lily was definitely missed last season), but taking Marshall (or Barney) away for more than an episode or two would just be too much for me to handle.
I too love Zach Quinto, but I would love it if Sylar took a permanent break.
I like Thirteen from from House but unless they have more serious character development, she needs to go. However in that case I don't want to see her killed off, there's already been enough character death in House recently.
Not Marshall!!! We just got the five back together. Leave them alone.
As to Tess, the entire Smallville cast, but Chloe, should follow her if she leaves.
A TWoP editor whining about Katherine Heigl's existence? Must be Friday.
And Topher rocks. For the record.
Couldn't agree more about Kenneth, who is a hilarious SUPPORTING character, not someone who should ever be more front and center than, say, Frank is. He doesn't need a hiatus per se, just a more clearly defined ensemble place.
But there is no way at all that Dwight's absence would be good for The Office--not for a while, not for a few episodes, not for ANY shows. If the argument is that Dwight is an annoying ass, well, so is Michael and the show can't function without him either. Being unlikable and funny at the same time is something that shows need to focus on, not downplay.
I couldn't agree more about Katherine Heigl. I hope she stays gone from Grey's Anatomy to pursue her movie career fulltime. I wouldn't even miss her from GA since I FF through her scenes. She's my least favorite character.
Angel, is there a female character on Smallville whose name isn't "Chloe" that you *don't* hate?
Dwight, Kenneth, and Marshall all need to stay. Everyone else can go, and Heigl can stay gone.
As much as I can't stand Heigl, I'd toss Meredith out before anybody else--I don't care that she is the titular person. She's an annoying pain in the arse.
Dwight? You want Dwight gone? As in Schrute? Are you feeling all right? Because the weirdness you're complaining about is what makes the character great.
Dwight doesn't need to go, but the writers do need to stop pairing Michael and Dwight in "crazy" adventures. Michael is supposed to be smart but dumb, not a complete idiot, but the writers write him exactly that way when he's paired with Dwight.
Remember Michael driving into the lake? Complete stupidity and almost make me give up on the show. 'Nuff said.
I don't get all the Katherine Heigl hate either. On the rare occasions that I watch awful Grey's Anatomy, it is Meredith who makes me want to slam my head into a wall.
Heigl is gorgeous and I loved her in Knocked Up. She is a movie star. I bet the only reason she is still on that crappy tv show is because she cannot get out of her contract.
I agree about Sylar. I always thought he should have stayed dead after season 1.
I don't watch many of these shows, but I have a couple things to say.
First of all, I love Zachary Quinto, I think he's the best actor on Heroes other than Jack Coleman, but I totally agree that he needs to take a break from the show for a while. It's really the writers that are bringing his character down, and a nice long half-season would give them some time to come up with something sincerely interesting for him to do.
I don't watch The Office, but I know many, many people who absolutely adore Dwight, and think he's the best part of the show... I don't see why he's on the list.
As for Morgan... I have to agree. Although I think it'll be tough for Chuck to lose his best friend for a while, Morgan needs to disappear until the last few episodes. I'm thinking a triumphant return to tell his buddy Chuck about his official Banihana chef status, and walking right into a big fight between Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Awesome, and the Ring. It was only a matter of time until the only person who doesn't know the secret is Ellie.
See, now I like Thirteen on House. My problem with her is more a problem with the writers than the actor. No matter what is going on in the storyline it always comes back to the fact that Thirteen's got Huntington's. I'm so over it.
Oh, and for those of you who don't understand the Heigl bashing it isn't entirely based on her annoying character. Alot of people just find the fact that she is continiously publicly insulting a show in which she is a major character really grating. The fact that her character is also grating just pisses people off.
"A TWoP editor whining about Katherine Heigl's existence? Must be Friday."
Seriously. We get it. TWOP hates KH and Olivia Wilde. Whining about them is getting old, and I actually enjoyed Izzy this season in the last few eps, once she *finally* rejected Denny. And despite her character's crap storylines, KH does a good job with what she is given. She's no Sandra Oh, but she's not as horrible as TWOP makes her out to be. Frankly, given some of her stories, she has a right to complain. The people at TWOP need to stop being a bunch of catty b/witches and get over it.
Personally I think Heroes would suck if Sylar/Zachary Quinto wasn't on it. Even if his story lines are repetetive and they ostrasize the character - Zachary Quinto always does such an amazing job that I am enthralled by his every scene.
I was with you up until #8. Marshall, Topher, and Morgan are all totall vital to their respective shows. (Especially Marshall. Suggesting a Marshall ban is sacrelige in the HIMYM world!)
ITA about KH. Hate her character, hate her breathless and dramatic speeches, hate her dinamic in Grey's in general (as for her big mouth, I don't think she's as bad as people tend to think, but whatever). I'd be happy is she left Grey's. I mean forever, without ghosty-creepy comebacks.
I'm with Brody. Morgan, Marshall and especially Topher are NEEDED by their respective shows.
Interesting points
1) I love Zachary Quinto too. Love love love him. However, I think he needs to leave the show and do bigger and better things. To be fair, the character was out of place in the third season. They made him a mama's boy all of the sudden and Sylar did things that seemed really out of character and random. I was frustrated but still cared since ZQ does such a good job. URGH! Since there is a potential new villain, I think Sylar needs to stay in Nathan's shell for a looong time and then pop up unexpectedly. Heroes has too hard of a time letting their favorites go.
2) She might be the reason why Season 5 was not that good. I liked her in Season 4 but when it was "The Remy show" 24/7, it got OLD
3) Marshall?! NO! I want more Marshmallow! Don't make him leave! We'll all complain by then too!
4) Yeah, too much focuses on Morgan as opposed to Chuck but I still want to see him in Hawaii.
The KH flap on this site and others isn't, IMO, due to a lack of talent, but a lack of professionalism or gratefulness.
Heigl has been acting since she was in her mid-teens, which many of you may not remember(and not because you're slow, just younger). She did fine playing supporting roles in a lot of movies, and no one is saying she doesn't deserve certain roles.
BUT.......
DON'T be such a perceived and whiny bitch about everything.
DON'T complain and take your name out of Emmy consideration when you know you won't win and simultaneously throw the writers under the bus..the same staff that helped you get noticed and brightened your star in the first place.
DON'T throw yourself into a media war and divide the cast over a gay rights issue if you were not the one wronged. That's T.R. Knights battle to fight, not yours.
DO seem appreciative and thankful for your status and success. That's all we ask.
Actually i disagree about Jenny. I'm interested to see how she'll do as queen bee; i did get a little bit fed up of her teen rebel phase with the emancipation/fashion line, but this could be interesting. And I do love Marshall/Jason Segel but it would be fun to see where they go with your propsed relocation storyline - not that it would ever happen of course.
I second what Olivia said above. You'd get rid of Jenny over Vanessa?? Personally I think they should both go, but Vanessa is such a waste of screen time.
I don't get all the 13 hate either. I like her. Cannot stand Taub though. HATE him with the fire of a thousand suns! I was hoping he would be the one to die last season.

I actually like a lot of the characters you mentioned...though I can see where you're coming from...but Marshall??? He's my favorite...even more than Barney. If anyone can grow tiresome on that show it would be Robin...but really...they all balance each other so well it would be awful to lose any of them (I missed Lily so much last season!!)
Morgan!? Morgan is awesome, Morgan is Chucks best friend, Morgan is not a problem! However, Kara on American Idol is.
Izzy can take Meredith and husband and her sister and Dr. Bawley with her.
I strongly vote for Tara from True Blood. I still entertain hope against hope that she'll get sacrificed in the finale. At the very least she deserves a long vacation with some trashy relatives in Florida to get over her ordeal and maybe some sense into her brain.
If you think Katherine Heigl is annoying (and she's far from the most annoying even on that show), what about the horrifyingly irritating KaDee Strickland? I actually think the problem is Shonda Rimes. Just think of all the annoying, pointless characters she has foisted on us over the years. And it's the actor who always gets the blame (Ellen Pompeo, KH, Strickland, hey, I even started to dislike Jeffrey Dean Morgan!).
I personally think Heigl was absolutely right to complain about the writing on Grey's Anatomy. If only they paid more attention to her.
I agree 13 should go for a while or maybe longer. Her character is a major bore and all over the map. Sorry but 13 suffers from a terminal case of bad writing.
Olivia Wilde is way too hot and can find better work else where.

Um perhaps you need to remember the site you're on. Television WITHOUT Pity.
Besides Izzie and Boreteen do suck. They both actually aren't so bad when produced in small doses but last season both were thrust down our throats and for me it has been highly distasteful.
As for the others, I pretty much agree, Even the enjoyable character ala Kenneth. Many a time has a great character been ruined by TPTB realising their awesomeness and then overusing said character, ripping whatever was once loved about them, to shreds.
Um perhaps you need to remember the site you're on. Television WITHOUT Pity.
Um, wow you are quite the original thinker.
I'm surprise LOST's Kate didn't make the list if anyone's charactor needs to disappear for awhile or ever its Kate.
I'm thinking maybe it's TWoP that needs to disappear for a while.
So Angel, when you say "we", you actually mean just "you" right? Because honestly, suggesting MARSHALL should leave the show for a while is so stupid on so.many.levels!
and what if the whole twop dissapear for five, ten or fifteen months???
"Um perhaps you need to remember the site you're on. Television WITHOUT Pity."
Um, yes, but I also thought I was on Television Without Repetitiveness. Find some new actors to hate on. The KH and OW hate is getting really old, really fast.
Anyone that thinks that Katherine Heigl is REMOTELY talented obviously
is deluded anyway, so how would ya'll know what annoying is? She's far
from any GOOD anywhere. Making BARELY $100 million in the box Office
HARDLY makes one a movie "Star." Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter,
Titanic, The Dark Knight, etc. - people that are in those movies are
movie STARS. It doesn't matter how much the budget was compared to how
much it makes, it matters HOW MUCH IT MAKES. If it doesn't make over
300 to 400 million in the Box Office it is NOT a hit, so YA'LL are the
ones who need to get over it and get some facts while you're at it. I
agree about Katherine Strickland, but the blame BELONGS with her just
like it belongs with Katherine Heigl. They're BOTH horrible actresses
and ironically enough they were both with the same guy at one point(in
RL). If it weren't for that so-called bad "writing" that everyone
THINKS is on Grey's, neither one of these airheads would have a job.
They pay too MUCH attention to KH, otherwise she wouldn't be getting
all of these easy outs (weeks off to film movies that don't go anywhere
anyway, criticises EVERYONE she's ever worked with and doesn't get
fired for it, does promos for movies that causes 17 hour days for
everyone and complains about that too, and again they let her get away
with it. Get a clue.)
"I'm thinking maybe it's TWoP that needs to disappear for a while." -
Remind us all why you're here to post some inane comments then?
Newsflash: if they weren't here, where would you KHunts post your
nonsensical BS?
"You're an asshole. cock sucker" - No, that would be KH, but you
wouldn't know what since your lips are permanently attached to her fat, droopy ass.
"Um, yes, but I also thought I was on Television Without
Repetitiveness. Find some new actors to hate on. The KH and OW hate is
getting really old, really fast." - I KNOW that the problem with that
comment is that you claim to think, and it's obvious that you're just
another any-dumb-blonde-hoe-in-hollywood kiss-ass, so you definitely
don't think that's for sure. If there weren't so many of your stupid
Republicans frequenting this site, then maybe they wouldn't have to
repeat themselves. For those of us with functioning brains, something
that you sorely lack, it sinks in the first time. You're REPETITIVE
kiss-ass-chorus of trolling the internet for every wittle bad comment
about "poor" worn out Katherine Heigl is really what's getting old,
that and Katherine's face because she looks like she's pushing 50. Now
go back under your rock, DandyAndy, and cry.
Angel C, is that you? Get a grip, girl.
Get a clue, airhead. I am not nor do I even know, Angel. I love how all the KH losers believe that there's only 1 or 2 of her haters in this world, when her haters far out-number you stupid like twats that love her so much, but I'm sure that you know that since you've already trolled all of her anti-articles and posted the same BS as all the other kiss-asses (IE: see above). Blow it out your fat ass, lard mouth - oh look, a fat ass and a big mouth are things that you and Kathy have in common, are you going to go and masturbate about that now? I wouldn't be surprised, you have no other life anyway that's for sure.
