Why I'm Addicted to Addicted to Beauty

Allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. With the exception of attending college in the Midwest, I've lived my entire life in the Northeast. I wear SPF 70. The only people I know who have gotten plastic surgery did so to make their breasts smaller. So to me, the excessively superficial world depicted in Addicted to Beauty is like a magical foreign realm. So naturally, I became completely fascinated by the cast after oh, seven minutes of the first episode, and soon enough I was addicted to Addicted to Beauty.

If you haven't seen the show, it revolves around the staff of the recently merged Changes Plastic Surgery & Spa in La Jolla, California. The CEO, Dianne, is going through a "contentious divorce" (she makes sure to tell you at least three times per episode) -- not only from her husband, but also from her face. Really, she doesn't even look like a human being anymore, and I can't stop staring at her. The experience is akin to seeing turtles hump on the Discovery Channel -- uncomfortable to watch, but so fascinating and kind of funny that you just can't tear yourself away. In fact, I don't find anyone on the show attractive except for Natasha, who, oddly enough, is the only one that hasn't had any work done on her face.

The client cases are meant to make you feel a little empathetic towards the industry, increasing self-esteem and all that nonsense. I tend to think that most of the work is unnecessary, but it does create a nice balance for the ridiculous antics that go on while a bunch of bitchy, flamboyant children attempt to run a business with some level of professionalism. Running back to Dr. Lee during lunchtime for a quick injection of Botox (apparently everyone does it?), selling products to their parents to win gold stars for the sales competition, bronzing their feet to match their legs... every day it's something new.

To give you an example, here's a web exclusive clip of Gary challenging the rest of the staff to a "lip off." That's right, it's a big lips competition. Just watch.

Is Diane even still at Changes? I went to their website and she's no where to be found. I had been interested in having a breast lift and tummy tuck (post pregnancy) with Dr. lee a few years ago...but now that I see all of this drama on TV, and thinking Diane is downright nuts...I don't want a DIME of my money going into her pocket. I'm researching 3 other surgeons...we'll see who I settle on. But...boy, she is as Borderline as they get.

Hilarious to watch the put on pretension of this show. This office isn't in La Jolla - not even close! In fact to get to La Jolla for the frequent 15 min "coffee breaks" the staff takes, they have to get in a car, drive several minutes to get to the freeway, drive south about 10 minutes, exit the freeway, and drive into La Jolla - 30-40 minutes ONE WAY!! The show is entertaining, even though the office is in (GASP!!) Carmel Valley!!

Still probably the second best Bond movie behind Casino Royale just because of the story. ,
