It's the most wonderful time of the year! For some of us, anyway. Halloween is a beloved holiday for many a person, if only because many of our favorite TV shows give us a Halloween-centric storyline, and Castle is among the faithful. Last night's episode was packed with faux-supernatural goodness after Castle and Beckett investigated a corpse found in a cemetery with real vampire teeth and a stake through his heart. Castle made a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference pretty much the minute he saw the body (later giving a brief summary of the vampire-Lycan feud from Underworld), but the first Joss Whedon reference of the night came before they even found the body. Castle tried on an old Halloween costume, and it was the full outfit for Mal Reynolds, his old role on Firefly! The back-and-forth with his daughter about his old "space cowboy" costume is priceless, and the scene just generally made us feel all warm and fuzzy. Check it out below, then watch the rest of the episode.

A friend of mine, my husband, and I had a Castle viewing party last night for this episode. WE laughed so hard during the first 10 minutes we had to go back and rewatch it! There is no end to our Castle love.
I LOVED the opening when Fillion dressed up as Mal. His daughter, "There are no cows in space." I guess she never watched Firefly... That scene was priceless and a special treat for fans.
"Didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?" BWAH! Being that "Serenity" was made nearly five years ago. (Was it really that long ago? That makes me sad.)
I squeed when he came busting out the door as Mal. And the bit of "Firefly" music, too!
Gawd, I love this show.
It's the little details that generally make for a very good and entertaining show. And Castle covers the details well. I like how they have a sense of humor referencing pop culture (including Firefly) and rely on the intelligence of the audience to pick up on the subtleties. Yay for good writing!
I - being pregnant and hormonal - started crying, full on tears of joy to see Mal again. Could not have had a better opening.
I think my little fangirl head just went 'splodey! Firefly, Buffy and then Underworld all in the first few minutes. Awesome.
Was I the only one that caught the "non-Fillion related" shoutout? I'm referring to Jon Huertas (Esposito) in the full-on Marine gear. He was a lead player in HBO's "Generation Kill" -- if that wasn't the same costume he wore in the mini, it was a great reproduction.
and esposito was wearing a military uniform - the actor that plays him was a marine in "generation kill".
My heart is full of joy.
Not always a fan of the meta, but I really liked this... just enough wry, self-deprecating humor, and a great fit for Castle.
now that I'm thinking about it too, the other cop, Ryan, was dressed in medical clothes, which, given the above, was most likely a shoutout to the fact that he played Dr. Devlin on General Hospital for a while.
Although not as awesome as the Firefly reference, I like how Beckett got to reference her Frank Miller tie-in. Seemed only fair.
Yes, but hello, the Buffy reference was awesome...I mean considering she killed him when he played Caleb in Season 7. He was obsessed w/ the First (the oldest evil ever) and tried to take Buffy out. Nathan Fillion is a master at acting...now he needs to reference Drive (may you RIP you fantastic cancelled show)
As soon as Castle came out wearing his Mal costume I started laughing - one of the funniest episodes so far. Such a great show, which means it'll probably be cancelled at the end of the series..
Did anybody catch the Barker school of design reference? (hello, Clive Barker fans...)
This is my favourite thing that has ever happened on TV. Ever.
Brown pants...red shirt...susp -- It's MAL!!!!
I SOOOOOO wanted Nathan to say: "I keep hoping it'll come back [in style]." when his daughter asks: "Don't you think it's time to move on?"
I've watched it about 50 times already! I wanted to die of nerdy goodness!
That was a pretty amazing episode all round. Loved all of the little winks to pop culture in general. And of course Mal!
"Don't you think you should move on?"
"But I LIKE it."
Bwahahahah!! LOVE IT!
The. best. thing. ever.
Did anyone see the catalyzer? According to Nathan's Twitter, there's one visible right when 'Mal' comes bursting through the door ("under the gun, under the boat, just to the right," he says).
Wow, the catalyzer is there. It's extremely subtle and not even visible in every scene of the bookshelf, especially with the darker lighting..
No-one else noted the Dr. Horrible shout-out, too? Working on the memorable laugh?
"Don't you think it's time to move on?"
If only Firefly fans & Whedonites payed attention to that...
I bet that outfit was one that he saved for himself. Apparently Nathan Fillion is and was a great fan of Firefly. (From his own mouth, he's mentioned his collection at many a convention).
And Drake, I'm sure there are plenty of things you need to move on from yourself.
I loved that that Nathan Fillion was dressed up as Mal. I think I squealed when I saw him. I love this show.
LOOOOVED it! We replayed the DVR of that scene three times before we could move on, just about fell off the couch when he came out wearing Mal's old getup. Died laughing, what a treat!
Was there any reference to the Librarian movie? Stana Katic played a vampire in it! Quite the coincidence!!
Firefly was originally on 7 years ago.
And they bring back the piece of crap "V" when they could have real quality SciFi with Firefly...I don't get it!
Hi! I simply wished to take the time to create a remark and state I've truly appreciated reading through your site. Thanks for those your projects.
In the selection of the best, you want to go to the mall and see what everyone uses. Would you like to see in catalogs and surf the Internet to see what the latest models in the act. Then, once you do your research, you have to watch your own closet and see what you have to match the style of the time.
I want to encourage my friends here to visit this very cool blog!
