BLOGS
I've been really hard on Grey's Anatomy for the last couple seasons, but it was coming from a place of love as I adored this show when it started. I thought it was a good medical drama with a nice balance of the soapy dating stuff and some actual gory and intriguing medical scenes. But then it started slipping: the clever storytelling went out the window and it became a caricature of itself and basically it became a chore to watch. That said, lately, it's shown some signs of life again, and while I'd like to credit it to the reduced presence of Katherine Heigl, there are a lot of other contributing factors. (I do so love to blame her for everything. Oh well.)
No George
As much as I loved George, his departure has actually made the show stronger, which I didn't think that would be the case during the earlier seasons. But George not being there means that there's one less person fighting against the Mercy West folks and it has given characters like Izzie, Meredith, Bailey, Callie and even Cristina an emotional well to pull from. And I like that his loss is still a big part of their lives and wasn't immediately forgotten.
The Merger
This infusion of new blood was just what the show needed. Some of the best moments on this show came when Addison or Sloan first showed up to make a mess of things (and I mean that in a good way). Having bitter characters who aren't just interns that can be pushed around come in and try and fight to keep their jobs resonates in this economic climate -- without being overly preachy -- and allows us to see Cristina and Alex behaving in the ways that we used to know and love. It's like back in the good old days when they were new interns bickering and conniving for every case.
Clever Twists
Having Izzie get fired and Meredith donate part of her liver to her father could have seemed like contrived ways to get the actresses out of the way while they are making a movie or giving birth, but the writing staff found a way to make it work. Having Izzie angry at Alex after her dismissal is a far better and more engaging reaction than having her sit around the house and just mope. Finding a way to bring her back in is going to be where it gets sticky, but we'll see how it plays out. And Meredith would never have given her father a piece of her liver, but after seeing how much she really cares for Lexie, it seems believable, and having her trapped in a hospital bed to hide her pregnant belly was actually smart.
Arizona and Callie
Again, I'm surprised to be saying this, but I've warmed up to Arizona and I really don't mind that she and Callie are taking a more central role on this show. Now that Arizona is showing some backbone in standing up to Cristina, rationally dealing with Callie's disapproving father and pushing Callie to stop being wishy-washy, she's proven she deserves a real place among the cast and that she isn't just the pediatrician who moons over Callie. Their relationship might be my favorite on the show right now and having them deal with their problems head on feels very realistic.
Stable Relationships
Speaking of relationships, while I did always enjoy the bed-hopping and on-call room encounters, it's nice that things have stabilized for some of the couples - at least for now. Besides the awesome Callie and Arizona, Meredith and Shepherd are actually happy together, which reminds me why I liked them as a couple in the first place, while Sloan and Lexie are comfortably cohabitating and Cristina and Hunt are even in therapy together. And while Alex and Izzie are on the outs, they are still a couple and he hasn't run off and had a fling like I would have expected. While I'm sure there's a rocky road ahead for some of these couples -- especially Cristina, since there's no way she'll put up with Hunt keeping her out of surgeries for long -- it's refreshing not to have all of the crazy swapping going on. There are only so many romantic permutations this show can (or should) explore.
For the first time in a long time, I'm pretty much happy to be watching the show. It's not tedious or something I'm doing out of habit; instead, I almost look forward to it each week. There are better story arcs, the acting seems to be peaking and it's just all-around fun again. I almost have to wonder if Katherine Heigl was onto something when she wanted better material written for Izzie. God, I can't believe I just said that, but she might have had a point. The better plots have led to more commanding performances by most everyone. Crazy, huh?
Still, the show is not perfect (the Chief, for one, is driving me bananas), but few shows are, and I am hopeful that this upward trend will continue. I just worry that the Mercy West interns will go the way of the merged staff on The Office, where one-by-one they quit or get fired so that eventually there's hardly any evidence of the merger at all. Some of these new characters could be worthy additions to the regular cast, if given half a chance. Guess we'll see how it all plays out over the next couple of episodes.

One down, three to go. My picks for who's staying: Reed and Charlie. Avery is a distant third. I've hung on to the show and even watched Private Practice, but it is definitely picking up. PS Katherine, a good actor can overcome bad writing.
Shepherd's speech at the end was one of the more amazing parts of this episode. What a way to recap the past two-three episodes in 2min. And yes, the Chief is driving me bananas as well. I almost think he should be one to get fired.
April should have stayed, Reed deserves to stay because the actress is brilliant, and Nosedive should leave.
And without Meredith and Izzie, wow, this show sure is good. Thank god McSteamy was back.
I cried when Lexie saw the burn victim. Yeah, i'm one of the ones who mourned over George's death. My favorite character dying seemingly 'brought again' on the show as a new patient brought me to tears. Damn you, Grey's Anatomy.
@Punstressak: "PS Katherine, a good actor can overcome bad writing."
This is true. However, no matter how talented an actor can be, no matter how well they manage to make gold out of hideously written lines, crappy writing is still crappy writing. Eventually, even the best of actors cannot overcome a lousy storyline. And it's disappointing to viewers at the same time, especially when you see a show (one that you used to enjoy) faltering. At some point, the actor is entitled to demand better quality writing, and so is the viewer. Otherwise, you lose the actor, and you lose the viewer.
Case in point. I stopped watching Grey's a couple seasons ago. I genuinely like all these actors and their characters, but the stories were getting too ridiculous. I wasn't enjoying it anymore. Reading this blog by Angel makes me curious to watch again, but I can't say whether or not I will. A handful of decently written episodes may not be enough to sway me after all the other stuff. We'll see. ;)
I have been a faithful viewer of GA since its beginning but without Izzie/katherine heigl, I feel the show is missing something.
Love Izzie's character. I hope she will be back soon...much rather Izzie anatomy then Greys anatomy.
I like that Meredith has actually grown as a character. She's not as morose anymore. Healthy relationships with Lexie and Derek have made her less depressed and I like that. And I'm actually not hating Lexie these days.
Yes, the chief is annoying, but what else can he do? He's in an incredibly difficult, impossible situation where he has to be the villain and can't get around that. I feel so sorry for him because I've always liked him but he's stuck as the a-hole this season.
I liked April, but she reminded me of one of the interns on Scrubs. I like that they've got interesting medical cases again, which are what I always kept tuning in for.
I also love Arizona. She's been so awesome. Strong and smart but good with patients too. Of all women for your daughter to date, Callie's dad should be happy it's Arizona.
I stopped watching at the end of season four, but I was going to rent season five to see if it picked up when it comes out soon. Glad to hear the awfulness is starting to abate! As much as I used to love George, it really was time for him to go. And I haven't seen the interns, but I hope Sarah Drew and Nora Zehetner stay, just because I love them as actors!
The Chief needs to resign, be killed off or replaced by the Board for Derek, or even Bailey (whose role in te show is decreasing rapidly, what happened to 'the nazi' that demanded not to be woken and tortured interns on her 60 hour shifts?)
It's not even the writing or the plotlines of his character. It's just him. He's just annoying as all fuck. Dear James Pickens Jr; leave.
This whole 'who will he hand Chief over to?' debacle and 'will he/won't he' retiring situation is all his character has and it has lasted almost 6 YEARS. I swear to God, if Adele shows up and says 'either you retire or I'm leaving you' one more time, I will never watch this show again.
I hope he screws up the Merger, gets fired, goes back to Adele and is never seen again. Honestly, THE WORST character the show has ever seen.
The show is much more watchable without Izzie's speeches. Grey's can do better without her.
First of all, LAUREN, you missed the BEST season yet (S5). So GO RENT IT!
I'm enjoying S6, but I really miss Meredith, Izzie not so much. I love Arizona ( not as much as Mer ), she's talented and gorgeous, the Chief... oh my god, retire already! The rest is good. Cristina is hilarious as always and I hope she'll make it with Hunt. And last but not least McDreamy... he never lets me down!
In other words, keep up the good work, end this merger soon (too many people) and bring back our Meredith! :)
The only reason I keep watching this show is Sandra Oh. I'll just watch anything this fantastic actress is in. And she is especially good this season, hilarious but also having great drama. I still laugh while remembering "Mr. Bear", and last week episode break down was brilliant.
Last season I really enjoyed her and Hunt, so I hope now the merger is done and everyone who has to left has is gone... they'll center on them more again. Even if we had to stand Bauer's ex for that to happen...
The season has been good so far, just a little caotic because of all these offscreen changes which had to become onscreen changes too.
Last episode, from the point of view of just a tv series, forgetting it's Greys and what we expect of it, it was very well done.
I agree the show is much better without having to hear Izzie. I don't miss Meredith much, but I prefer her to so much Lexie (she is so dull).
I can not stand Arizona, the perfect woman and doctor who never does mistakes. And this actress and the one who plays Sloan are the most mediacre actors in the show. They never make me feel for their characters, it's incredible...
Just give Callie a better girlfriend.
The rest is ok, I just hope the other new girl is fired too. The boys are not so bad, they can become likable.
I miss Izzie! Get rid of the ugly new girl!
Great episode. Great writing, great directing, great acting - I'd even name it the show's best.
Sad that Izzie wasn't on it, missed her. And Lexie was great, the actress (Chyler Leigh) has been brilliant so far this season, hope to see more acting chops from her.
Pretty pointless end, but whatever, I guess. The rest of the episode made up for it.
OH, and Justin Chambers was well, too. He, Chyler Leigh, and Sandra Oh.
Yup. Before I get into detail, the actors' performances definitely brought the episode. Not all of them, but Sandra Oh (as freaking usual) and Chyler Leigh (who has been surprisingly phenomenal this season) made it for me.
Down to Sandra's insistence, and Chyler's emotions, well, that nailed it.
I like Sarah Drew. I like April. I want her to stay, and same for Nora Zehetner.
Great to not hear Meredith's voice for once. Well.. that's not exactly true, but at least, her irritating voice wasn't overvoiced this time, right?
I do not like Nora Zehetner. Something about her makes me angry.
I miss Mer.
I haven't really watched since the beginning of season 2 but I kept up by sometimes reading the recaplets. Now I have watched the last few episodes on Hulu and was pleasantly surprised. I probably won't stop watching 30 Rock in that time slot but I know I can catch Grey's on Hulu later, which is cool. Izzie being gone definitely doesn't hut and I haven't even hated Meredith that much!
I feel exactly the same way. Last season I only watched randomly and even then I often found myself zapping away in favour of The Office. Now I'm actually interested again. I see great potential in the Mercy West characters, love Sloan and Lexie, Carrie and Arizona, Hunt and Cristina and don't mind Meredith and Derek as much when they are stable and the Derek-centred episode was refreshing.
The Chief is a pain in the ass but not nearly as painful to watch as Emotional Retard Bailey. She went from favourite character to the one I zap away from. She seems totally stuck in her crazy emotional responses to patients and complete blockage when dealing with personal problems. It's become unbearable and I sincerely hope she'll cross over to Private Practice for a fresh start, she'll fit right in with the other idiots there. Allyson used to be a favourite in the house too.
I also think it's good that Izzy and Meredith are on hiatus, it's giving the other characters some room to breath and flourish. I hope Alex will get over Izzy sooner rather than later and come to life again.
I watch GA because about every-other episode I found myself crying over the situations and patients. I think those episodes were a little longer between last season. This season is starting off well in the 50/50 category.
I'm sorry Pun, but the greatest sets, directors, actors, locations, or all the money in the world CANNOT overcome bad writing! But KH doesn't fall in to the category of a "good actor" so it's a moot point anyway, I guess.
Whatever, call me when Izzie gets back the Mercy West people annoy me. Who would've thought I'd have stopped watching when Meredith left? Too bad she didn't die during the surgery.
I have to say, while Justin Chambers has always been good, he's been nothing short of amazing this season and last spring. I started watching for Sandra Oh, but JC has really caught my eye.
I agree. I was so ready to give up on this show, but I decided to stick it out for a while longer and I'm glad I did. I've really been enjoying it. The "fresh blood" helps, but I'm sorry that Sarah Drew was gone so quickly. I hope they keep Nora Zehetner.

The last episode (The Arizona Show) had a scene with Cristina and Hunt, Callie and Arizona, Lexie and McSteamy and it took me a few second to realise that only Cristina was part of the original cast. I think that GA's strength is integrating new cast members. They did it with Sloan and Callie, then Lexie, then Hunt and Arizona. The cast pictures for each season have gotten bigger and bigger and given the real life financial situation I'm not sure ABC can sustain it, especially as the orginal cast members are going to be on rollover contracts. I miss Mer, and Izzie, and Bailey, and I can do without too much angry Alex and stupid Chief and Happy Derek. I don't think that all the new staff will stick, but if they are going to reflect the real life situation then they may need to shed some of the regulars.
I agree, it's getting better. Season 5 was fantastic, and made me seriously consider purchasing it on dvd; for as much as I've enjoyed Grey's since the beginning, the only episodes outside of season 5 to make me feel that way were the prom sex ep and the bomb.
I haven't always enjoyed the new characters, but eventually they do win me over. I absolutely adore Mark and Lexie as a couple, and for me they sparked new life in the show. I totally agree the show is more fun to watch with stable couples dealing with realistic problems, and that the romantic permutations should stay in earlier seasons. The Chief needs to be removed, but I wouldn't mind seeing him stay as a surgeon. Bailey needs to stop having crazy reactions for her 2 minutes of screen time, Alex & Cristina have always been way too mean for me, and I could do with fewer speeches from Izzie and Arizona (much as I like them). But hey, no show is perfect, and after so many years, it's still good enough to stick with.
