How I Met Your Mother: The Best Night Ever (or at Least of This Season)

I admit it: I haven't been totally in love with this season of How I Met Your Mother. Don't get me wrong, I still adore the show but none of the recent episodes have really made me cry tears of laughter the way that some have in past seasons. I was going to blame it on the fact that Barney and Robin are a couple and acting weird (she should have been so into the strip club). Or perhaps the fact that now that Ted is single and just teaching, he's really even more boring than usual. Or most likely a combination of all of them. I've just felt basically disenchanted with the series... until last night, when the show totally won me back.

As soon as they mentioned that Ted had unwittingly become the Sexless Innkeeper, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites --I love when they add to their lexicon of catchphrases. And though that probably would have been enough, the other plot involving the couple dating between Lily and Marshall and Barney and Robin was equally strong. Marshmallow and Lilypad prepping their apartment with margarita mix and Gouda seemed so desperately appropriate for them, as did Barney and Robin's irritated reaction towards it. And then to top it off, Marshall's obsession with montage videos really took the cake. His song, "It Was the Best Night Ever," set to photos of the couples hanging out was simply awesome. And that's not even mentioning his enthusiasm for cat sitting... and, unfortunately, for cat funerals. Those photos from the cat funeral had me rolling on the ground with laughter.

Better still? This morning I come in to check the website to watch the montage again, and instead I'm treated to a black and white music video of Marshall singing the song accompanied by Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt (who was one of my major childhood crushes. Don't ask). Everything about it is great, especially since it is an exacting parody of Extreme's famous "More Than Words" video, and features some tender moments between Marshall and Nuno. I've already watched it twice and will likely watch it at least as many times as I did "Sandcastles in the Sand." So good going, show. I'm now overjoyed that HIMYM has returned to form and am actually looking forward to next week, instead of tuning in out of habit.

If you haven't seen the video, watch it below now!
