Saturday Night Live: Gaga for Lady Gaga

In comparison with last week's season premiere, this week's Ryan Reynolds-hosted episode was a vast improvement. Lady Gaga appeared as musical guest (and got some screen time in sketches), while Madonna, Elijah Wood, and Reynolds' wife Scarlett Johansson also made the SNL rounds.

When I saw that Ryan Reynolds would be hosting, I knew that this episode would be better simply because of his comedic ability (of course coupled with his Adonis-like arms). Here's the best and worst of this week's episode.

Andy Samberg threw it on the ground in a new Digital Short:

This horrible mess of a Family Feud sketch was incredibly offensive. Suffice it to say that it involved a lot of Mackenzie Phillips/John Phillips "jokes" It should have been saved for the last minute or cut out entirely. Watch at your own risk:

Her Madgesty appeared on Deep House Dish alongside Lady Gaga, but it was hella awkward and the jokes fell flat when Madonna's mic seemed to be not working. The funniest thing in the entire sketch was the song "Status Update." Danny McCooz is heading to Costco...

Scarlett Johansson reprised her role as a porcelain-fountain shilling Jersey Girl in this sketch. They seem to recycle this sketch with other items -- last time it was marble columns and before that it was chandeliers. Or vice versa.

Uh-oh. Lady Gaga and Andy Samberg wore the same outfit:

Overall, this was a much-welcome improvement upon last week's premiere, and hopefully Drew Barrymore will continue this upward momentum on next week's installment.

Microphone issues or not, Madonna is so many years removed from having a sense of humor about herself that there's just no possible way she can be funny. And it's too bad, because she used to be.

Surprisingly funny for SNL recently. If they'd get some more decent writers this show could be great.

i really liked Scar-Jo's Joisey accent and the dress was so right!
yeah, i know, NJ is such an easy target.
the real question is whether the SNL writers dissed Madge & Gaga with that lame skit or whether Madonna just never showed up for rehearsals.

I actually laughed a lot this week. The digital short was surprsingly funny, although the butt tazing was a bit much. I also really enjoyed the Weekend Update. The eyeore joke had me laughing on the GROUND!

this show needs to be canceled. This cast and writing and much worse than the infamous 1980 season.

and that fred armisen guy is the worst excuse for a "comedian" I have ever seen.

I'm actually more comforted at the realization that LADY GAGA has a sense of humor about herself. I've not known much about her outside of her music.

I can't believe Scarlett Johansson wore my prom dress from 1991! Seriously! I had it in green instead of blue. How embarrassing! lol

This episode was awful except for Andy Sandberg's "to the ground" piece - even the reliable ones (Bill Hader/Will Forte) had a bad night - They should have kept Michaela Watkins (I loved the Bitch Pleeze skits) - Kirsten Wiig is overrated and overplayed

I can't believe there are people who listen to Gaga's music, she is an "act" more than a musician. True talented singers should get promoted like Renee Olstead

I thought that Weekend Update was the only funny thing on the show which is really a bummer.
Is it a rule that if you are hosting and dating/married to another famous person that they have to be on the show too?
