Yesterday, they finally announced who would be hosting the Academy Awards ceremony next year, after it was revealed that Hugh Jackman would not return following last year's show-stopping performance. And the lucky host is... Alec Baldwin. And Steve Martin. Both of them. Because... it's... uh... huh? True, Baldwin just won his second Emmy in a row, and Martin has hosted the Oscars twice before, but this really makes zero sense to us, for the following reasons.
1. They don't really appeal to a younger audience.
Wouldn't the Academy awards like to bring in some younger viewers? Yes, Baldwin just won two Emmys, but 30 Rock isn't exactly the highest-rated show among 18- to 49-year-olds, and his Jack Donaghy character is the stuffiest of the bunch. And Steve Martin, when he's not writing novels and making Cheaper by the Dozen movies, plays the banjo, which could make for a real turn-off of an opening song. Experience is great, but how about a younger showman like Justin Timberlake? The tweens would tune in for that, right?
2. There's no variety!
The ages of Martin and Baldwin (64 and 51, respectively) wouldn't be such a big deal if just one of them wasn't a white male. Why not pair one of them with a younger black comedian, or a lady, for Pete's sake? It's not like they're an established comedy duo or anything (although both have repeatedly hosted Saturday Night Live, below); pair Baldwin with the irreverent Tracy Morgan to make a 30 Rock pairing, or Martin with the show's Emmy-nominated Jane Krakowski for an egotistical, Jenna-style self-promotion-fest.
3. Steve Martin is better when he's extensively scripted.
Martin has been doing comedy in nearly all of its forms -- stand-up, music, sketch, short stories, novels, movies -- for decades, but his comedy strength is in his precisely scripted, plotted, choreographed and composed work, like the SNL sketch below. Alec Baldwin gets off some zingers in interviews, but why not get someone who does interviews for a living? Jon Stewart has hosted before, but Stephen Colbert is hysterical when gabbing with his guests, and his conservative, liberal-Hollywood-hating persona would make for some great commentary.
4. The movie they're promoting will be long gone by Oscar time.
Yes, the two play rivals for Meryl Streep's affection in It's Complicated, which comes out on December 25th, but by the time the ceremony airs on March 7, it'll likely be out of most theaters, unless it somehow becomes a big hit, in which case it won't need the promotion. (See the trailer below to decide for yourself.) And if this is an attempt to promote the movie in advance of its release, then it's a little early -- nobody will be talking about these two seven weeks from now.
What do you think? Will Baldwin and Martin hosting make you more or less likely to watch the Oscars?

I actually won't watch the Oscars at all with those two hosting. I can't stand Alec Baldwin. Steve Martin is funny but I don't think he's been relevant for years. I can't imagine how anyone would really care about the Oscars with them as hosts. (Admittedly, I was hoping against hope for a Neil Patrick Harris trifecta!)
I like the idea of two hosts. They've both been in scores of movies, in a variety of genres, so they qualify as Hollywood institutions. They both can do sketch comedy, and at least one can sing. And does everything have to be racially balanced?
Love them apart, can't imagine them together.
I agree: someone younger would have been better. I'm no Timberlake fan, but he can be pretty funny, as he's proved on his 100 appearances on SNL.
there is enough in the media pandering to tweens as is. and diversity for the sake of diversity is condescending to minorities, these are two funny men, not everything has to be political
NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH NPH
They actually have great chemistry together (no mention of their ongoing feud on who hosts Saturday Night Live the most - they always cameo whenever the other hosts - it's on Hulu). I'm excited about this, am I weird?
I don't mind older celebrities that don't necessary rouse the tween demo, but these two seem kind of an odd choice. I agree with acd all the way.
Yeah, if you're going for the younger audience, this is a terrible idea. I don't usually count myself as a 'younger audience', but these two make me want to sleep at the thought of them hosting the Oscars. It's boring enough.
I think these guys are great, so I'm excited. And frankly, people need to get over the "younger viewers" thing. "Younger viewers" are never going to be drawn in by the person hosting this event (does anyone actually think that more people watched last year because young people love Hugh Jackman? Is that supposed to be a thing?). The stereotypical younger viewer doesn't care who the best actors were this year, but who their favorite actors were this year, and that's just something people are gonna have to learn to accept.
I was really thinking it'd be NPH, even though he just did the Emmys. But they went so well and he's in enough movies himself, so why not? I don't know if Justin Timberlake could carry an entire show, but he'd be good in parts. Plus, what movies has he really done well in? I don't think anyone will ever truly be happy with the Oscars until Billy Crystal hosts again, and then he would host and it wouldn't be as good because its been so long and he's not really around anymore. With all the websites and tv shows devoted to celebrities, tuning into award shows to see them just isn't as interesting anymore sadly.
These guys are in MY demographic and I don't like it.
Oh, for for those complaining about diversity for diversity's sake. There are plenty of non-white guys (including women) who would not be a token. Gawd, the Academy is often labled for being out-of-touch and stuffy. The choice of hosts certainly does nothing to disprove this.
Of course the Academy is out-of-touch and stuffy. Pairing Chris Rock with Steve Martin isn't going to change that.
I would actually love to see chris rock host again or maybe wanda sykes I think she would freaking hilarious and both comedians arre not no afraid to take jabs at some of those prentious assholes that some people like to call actors. *cough* sean penn *cough* *cough*
Your absolutely right, it should be hosted by Robert Pattinson and Stewie Griffin.
I think they would be a 'hoot' together. I look forward to this stampeding duo!
Baldwin and Martin...a fab marriage of comedic proportions. I can't wait to see them in action!
