Today's TWoP News: November 2, 2009

Southland is back on! Glee solo album news! HIMYM and Community guest stars! Crank the TV series! Sir Ian McKellan's sketchy TV brother! If you can't take the heat, get out of Today's TWoP News!

Everyone take a deep breath, the canceled Southland has been officially picked up by TNT. TNT: Your one-stop shop for all of your TV defecation needs!

A ton of TV guest stars have been announced, each cooler than the last:
- First up, Scott Foley will guest-star on three episodes of Cougar Town, as a business man being shown houses (and sexual positions?) by Courteney Cox's cougar character. Say that five times fast.
- Second, Anthony Michael Hall will sport a mustache as a bully in the Dec. 10th Christmas episode of Community. Not only does this tie in to the show's numerous Breakfast Club references, it also reunites Hall with his Vacation dad, Chevy Chase. Rusty!
- Third, Gossip Girl and Privileged alum JoAnna Garcia will play a college friend of Ted's on How I Met Your Mother. Her perpetually in-demand character is pursued by Ted when he finds out she's between suitors, because that's what you look for in a wife: availability.

After this weekend's Taylor Swift double-booking, Saturday Night Live is going back to booking actors and musicians separately, thank God, with Mad Men's January Jones and the Black-Eyed Peas on the 14th and G.I. Joe's Joseph Gordon-Levitt with the Dave Matthews Band on the 21st. After this bizarre Transformers sketch, I can't wait to see what they do with G.I. Joe.

Sir Ian McKellan has agreed to star in a mockumentary-style comedy series titled The Academy, in which he plays his own brother, Murray McKellan, the head of a run-down drama academy seeking new funding. It's still being shopped around, but here's hoping it becomes a fake reality.

The first solo album to come out of Glee? Matthew Morrison Sings. TV's Mr. Schuester is about to finalize a deal to produce a "classier Justin Timberlake album." Blasphemy!

After Microsoft found out that The Family Guy was offensive and pulled its sole sponsorship of the show's Nov. 8th variety special, Warner Bros. Pictures stepped in to promote their upcoming movie Sherlock Holmes. My interest in the movie just dropped by 50%, although, to be fair, I still haven't been this excited to see a movie in a long time.

Wanna get college credit for watching and talking about The Wire? Step 1: Get accepted to Harvard. My Name is Earl will also be used in a class on Eastern philosophy.

Watching TV on the Internet is so 2009. In 2010, you'll be able to watch sketches that originally appeared on the Website Funny or Die on pay channel HBO, as part of the new sketch comedy series Funny or Die Presents! Now, even fewer people will be able to watch them! Success!

If Heroes is really wrapping up after this season, then that means more room on our TV schedule to watch Zeroes, a new drama series from Crank and Gamer writer-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Each episode will be the final 60 minutes of a different crisis, starting when a special strike team authorized to use deadly force arrives on the scene. So it's basically like every episode is a season finale of 24. Awesome. This may be better than our original idea, which was to drop Jason Statham into hostage situations and see what happens.

To me, "Zeroes" sounds like a documentary of old Japanese jets. Speaking of that, isn't that show a lot like "Flashpoint" which was a Canadian channel bought up by and American network with an Italian-American star who used to be on a really underappreciated CW show??

Yeah, the first time I saw the trailer I thought, "That's going to rock." The second time, meh. The third time....fiftieth time....Seriously, pushing a movie can have drawbacks. I have a pretty careless attitude with it now. I'll see it if my friends want to. I'm thinking that Robert Downey Junior will be awesome, but the storyline will suck.

SouthLand can be a great show if they get rid of Regina King

There's a Wire class at Middlebury College, too. It's appropriately named "Watching the Wire."

I'm a die hard Heroes fan and even I think they should call it a wrap after this season. The show never really lived up to the hype of season 1. I'm watching til the bitter end, but expectations are low.
