TV on DVD: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

This week, it's all about the kids. And the crime procedurals. Say, why aren't there any crime procedurals for kids? Whatever happened to Encyclopedia Brown? Sally Kimball needs to come back and crack some skulls.

Dawson's Creek: The Complete Series
What do you get the Fringe fan who has everything? This prequel series! Joshua Jackson portrays the man who would be known as Peter Bishop as a young boy, when he was affectionately known as Pacey and his best friend was a giant forehead grown in a lab and attached to a boy named Dawson, who owned a creek. Also starring Michelle Williams as young Olivia Dunham and Katie Holmes as Walter.

JAG: The Ninth Season
Yes, the show that spawned NCIS is finally releasing its last season on DVD. Can the apprentice become the master? Will NCIS go the whole nine yards? Or does the flame that burns twice as bright last half as long? And other metaphors!

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days
The greatest sketches and songs from 40 years of Sesame Street. Man, I'd hate to be the one who had to watch every episode to find them. After the first couple of seasons, the theme song would be like needles in my brain.

The Sarah Jane Adventures: The Complete Second Season
If you aren't familiar with this Doctor Who spin-off, it's pretty much Who meets The Bloodhound Gang -- the Electric Company program, not the offensive band of the same name. The former would be a kiddie version of Doctor Who; the latter would be, well, Torchwood.

Justice League: The Complete Series
Anybody who tells you that superhero cartoons are for kids, that they lack drama and depth, and that they're all poorly animated, should be bludgeoned repeatedly with a copy of this DVD set.

Heartland: Season 1, Part 2
Wait, so a horse whisperer is a real thing? Or is it just something that this and that Robert Redford movie both made up?

Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First and Second Seasons w/CD
If you get this for your significant other for the holidays, well... let's just say it's business time.

Also out this week:
Keeping Up With the Kardashians: The Complete Second Season Because only owning one season of this show does not make you a better person.
The Untouchables: Season 3, Volume 2 I love the title "The Untouchables" so much that I want to spell it wrong and make a new movie out of it.
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: The Complete Collectors' Set It comes in a foot locker, while the Marlon Wayans movie comes in a hurt locker.
Midsomer Murders: Barnaby's Casebook A whopping 28 episodes of English countryside killings.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold Vol. 2 Whimsical, self-referential and much better than you would ever expect it to be.
Nash Bridges: The Third Season Don Johnson. Cheech Marin. The dream team.
