BLOGS
While we're constantly grateful for our friends and family and jobs and health and all that jazz, we're really thankful for the gift of television and DVRs and for Grey's Anatomy episodes without Katherine Heigl. So instead of focusing on the negative, we'd like to spend this very special episode of TWoP 10 celebrating all of the good that has come to the airwaves this fall.
10. Dollhouse is Given Notice
While we're not happy Dollhouse was cancelled, we are happy that the show will get the chance to air its remaining episodes to finish out its second and final season. Unlike when unceremoniously cut off Joss Whedon's Firefly a few years back, Whedon will be able to wrap up Dollhouse the way he wants to, which hopefully means we'll see a lot of story resolution that might have been a long ways off under ordinary circumstances. We won't go as far as saying "blessing in disguise," but we will say that we can't wait for the finale, because nobody does them like Joss.
9. Charlie's Match.com Dating Profile (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia)
Sunny in Philly's funniest moments usually involve delving into the mind of Charlie Kelly, but Mac and Dennis trying to interview him for his Match.com profile, in which we learned that his favorite food is "milksteak" (preferably with a side of fine jelly beans -- raw), that his interests include "magnets" and "little green ghouls, buddy!" and that his dislikes are solely "people's knees" was one of the funniest short scenes in the history of this already awesome show.
8. Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory
Parsons scored an Emmy nom for his role on BBT and rightfully so. His character Sheldon is a masterpiece, the perfect blend of intellectual superiority, smug nerdosity and obsessive-compulsive disorder. From his intricate arguments about superheroes to his icy analysis of his roommate's love life, he's the bastard we love to hate, mostly because we know he likes to be sung to when sick.
7. John Lithgow on Dexter
It didn't seem possible, but somehow John Lithgow has managed to forego his usual overacting style in favor of delivering a genuinely terrifying and restrained serial killer foe for Dexter. He's the perfectly suburban Christian dad when the script calls for it, which makes his psychotic explosions all the more disturbing when they appear. Truly perfect casting, and very impressive work from an unlikely actor on a series returned to form this season.
6. The Office Wedding
Finally, the payoff we've been waiting five years for! Although the rehearsal dinner was a nightmare and the ceremony itself devolved into a YouTube video tribute, Jim and Pam got the wedding they wanted by cutting out for an hour and getting married on the deck of a boat under Niagara Falls. In the words of Jim: "I bought those boat tickets the day I saw that YouTube video. I knew we'd need a backup plan. The boat was actually Plan C, the church was Plan B, and Plan A was marrying her a long, long time ago. Pretty much the day I met her." Oh, Jim -- you seem to have gotten something in our eye.
5. The Vampire Diaries Is Surprisingly Good
The first episode of this seemed to just be aimed at cashing in on the popularity of Twilight (even though the VD books were around first). But this silly CW love triangle has rapidly become a weekly addiction, not for the cheese factor, but because it's actually good -- shockingly so. The well-developed rivalry between the brothers, some stellar acting on Ian Somerhalder's part and a bunch of really fun plot twists (and the cutest little witch since Willow) have made this a perfectly satisfying partner for our beloved Winchesters.
4. Nathan Fillion on Castle
We love Nathan Fillion wherever he pops up, so we were happy when his new series Castle got picked up for a second season because it's a fun, comedic procedural that keeps getting better the more we come to know the cast of characters. But the best supporting cast in the world would mean squat without Fillion himself, who hams it up in every scene as Rick Castle, the big-kid mystery author who gets to play cops and killers for real. And the Halloween-episode shout-out where he dressed up as his character from the late, great Firefly? Icing on the cake.
3. Two Awesome New Comedies in Community and Modern Family
Usually if we get one halfway decent new comedy a season we're lucky. And ones that start strong and don't need a lot of time to build like Parks and Recreation or The Office are even more rare. This season we were blessed with two fantastically funny new shows that started off fabulous and have kept up the momentum. Community focuses on an oddball students in preposterous situations and Modern Family focuses on an oddball group of relations in preposterous situations, both happily laugh track-free. Community is filled with pop culture references and features a selfish jerk as the lead, while Modern Family delights in exposing as many awkward family moments as possible. Both are awesome in their own right and we're hoping that we'll be thankful for them for many years to come.
2. The Mad Men finale
Aside from the regrettable likely loss of Kinsey and Ken for good, the new business endeavor between Don, Bertram, Roger, Pryce, Peggy, Pete and Harry was one of the most exciting season finale plot twists and next-season set-ups we've ever seen. The band's back together (with Joan in tow, thankfully), the Draper marriage was put out of its misery at just the right time and we can't wait to see what happens with that rag-tag rogue advertising company full of crazies cooped up in a hotel room. Dear Bones, House and Heroes: this is how you do it right.
1. All Things Glee
We may quibble and nitpick about plotlines that don't make sense or about Mr. Schue's annoying wife, but it comes from a place of love. This show is just such a wonderful delight, filled with pop songs and good cheer, that it just brightens up our week. Jane Lynch is phenomenal and someone needs to give Amber Riley (Mercedes) a recording contract, stat. And seriously, iTunes can't post the songs fast enough for us. So while we might not love a preachy story about being nice to people in wheelchairs, we love this show with open arms and are willing to forgive all of its flaws.
What are you thankful for on television this season? Let us know below.

I'd be grateful if a large bus ran over the entire TWOP staff this Xmas. Then perhaps we could get some decent coverage on this site instead of pathetic digs at Katherine Heigl all the time.
I find Heigl completely repulsive, and I truly delight in every single dig this website takes at her.
Now excuse me, my milk-steak is ready, buddy.
I don't agree about TWOP under the bus, because they can be funny, but I do agree that there's a little too much Heigl hate. The writing for her character was horrible. She was right to say something. Calling someone sexual slurs is wrong. She was right to say something. Just because she speaks up doesn't make her evil. And the whole George/Izzie and Dead Denny wasn't her fault. If she sucked while she acted it (which she did, at times) it was because the writing was crap.
I, too, am thankful for Nathan Fillion. I am also thankful for "V." And that's pretty much it. Until 2010 when I can be thankful for "Lost," even though I am not thankful that it is the final season.
I am grateful for Sons of Anarchy the season isn't over yet and it was a wild and crazy ride so far. Cant wait for season 3
I totally agree about Amber Riley deserving a recording contract . . . along with more recognition on the show. Girlfriend's got serious chops. She's the true breakout singer on the show, even though they give every major solo to that other chick who sings fine, in a Broadway sort of way. But Amber's lead vocal when the Glee group sang the national anthem at the World Series was just phenomenal, and emphasized even more how pathetically underused she is on the show.
1. Big Bang Theory - Great show, just get rid of Penny
2. The Mentalist - I love Simon Baker's acting and the others as well (Cho is the best!) I also think based on last night's episode Patrick Jane is Red John (it would be the best twist in tv history)
3. 30 Rock - hilarious as always
4. Legend of the Seeker - It has gotten off to a great start after it's wonderful season finale. Though I hope Charisma Carpenter is not around much longer.
5. Fringe - This show takes a while to get into but episodes like last night show it is really good.
I will be thankfull when TWOP gets spell checkers and editors again.
I'm thankful for SOA and Modern Family this year and for a fantastic MadMen finale. Also thankful for the great choice of fantastic television even beyond HBO. TV is officially more fun than movies.
I am baffled at some of the choices of TWOP coverage, but the recappers and forums (particularly those for shows that aren't covered) are still great.
Hey, Mark and zeke68, you know what? If you don't like the Heigl hate, you don't have to read it. Ain't living in a free country great? (Or at least having access to its web content).
I'm thankful for Grey's Anatomy episodes without Katherine Heigl too; that's an hour of my life back each week I can spend watching something better.
I'm thankful for SOA and Modern Family this year and for a fantastic MadMen finale. Also thankful for the great choice of fantastic television even beyond HBO. TV is officially more fun than movies.

Hee. You spelled thankful wrong.
Why oh why was Peggy not mentioned in the Mad Men blurb? Ken got a nod, but not Peggy? Way lame.
So, when Dollhouse goes, do we finally get Castle recaps? Because you know we need them.
I too am thankful for everything 'Glee'(Jane Lynch, Amber Riley, Chris Coulter and Mark Salling particularly)
Also I am thankful for Dollhouse being put out of its misery
I need to check out Modern Family...I guess over the holidays
Sheldon is the bastard we love to hate???
Who hates Sheldon? And he's not a bastard--remember when he loaned Penny all that money?--he's just particular.
I'm thankful for FlashForward, particularly for Demetri Noh who I hope doesn't die.
And more generally, I'm thankful for DVR. :-D
I am grateful for Cougar Town. There. I said it.
I'm so glad to see Charlie's Match.com profile on this list; that was seriously one of the funniest scenes in the show's history.
I am thankful for all of these, but most especially for Mad Men (always), Community, Modern Family, and the new and improved Parks & Rec (it's so much better this season, guys!).
Please, TWOP, consider doing Castle recaps!!
I'll be grateful when TWOP stop bitching about Dushku and start bitching about Whedon's subpar writing, his insipid cronyism, and Penkitt's quite appalling acting.
Yay for adding Peggy!
Dexter: Now if only Trinity or the lecherous neighbor would bludgeon Rita to death, that would be AWESOME. I can't stand that character.
I'm thankful for True Blood in general--and Alex Skarsgaard in particular.
I'm also thankful for Glee. It just makes me happy.
And here's to Tim Gunn. Wherever he pops up (be it on Project Runway or Biggest Loser or in his Guide to Style) he is always a welcome sight on my TV screen. Thanks for making it work, Tim!
Speaking of "open arms" and Glee, who would be thankful for a rendition of that song on the show? *hand shoots up*
I am thankful for Lea Michele's presence on 'Glee." The show would not be the same without her. She's an absolute delight.
I, too, am thankful for the excellence that is Community and especially thankful for Abed (Danny Pudi).
I'm thankful for DirecTV because I get two more glorious seasons of Friday Night Lights.
I'm thankful to Mrs. Ackles and Mrs. Padalecki for making their sons Jensen and Jared eat their veggies and drink their milk when they were little boys so that they grew up into such fine, strapping young men who appear on my TV every Thursday night.
And I'm thankful for Kunal Nayyar who's managed to make Rajesh Koothrappali almost as good of a reason to tune into The Big Bang Theory as Jim Parson's Sheldon.
Thankful for Community, best new comedy of the year. (I've recorded MF but haven't had time to see it so no opinion yet).
Don't understand the Glee, Vampire Diaries or Mad Men love, but whatever rocks your boat..
Love Supernatural and Fringe,The Mentalist; becoming big fan of HIMYM, Dexter and True Blood. Not so crazy about the writing on 30 Rock this year. I live for the Fey/Baldwin duets, and I would love to see one show featuring just them without all the subplots. Well okay, you can throw Kenneth in there too. Maybe stuck together in an elevator?
Too bad Dollhouse is cancelled, just when it was reaching its stride. Poor Joss. So why isn't crap like Cougar Town cancelled yet? Vanity project if I ever saw one. Whole point of show seems to be showing off Cox's cougar bod. So over that, Dewey.
Heroes and GA completely bore me now.
And extra extra love for Danny Pudi, Tim Kang and John Noble. Oh and Misha Collins & Jensen Ackles. Great actors all, and I have major lust for Misha & Jensen.
SGU! SGU!! Is there no love for my SGU?
I love Castle too. It's nice to have a crazy lead and stable supporting cast members (rather than a crazy cast and a "normal" lead).
The Mad Men season finale was great, but how about the series finale of The Shield? That was hands-down the most satisfying finale ever!
I am thankful for all the Katherine Heigl bashing that TWOP can dish out. Her smugness knows no bounds.
I am thankful for all the Katherine Heigl bashing that TWOP can dish out. Her smugness knows no bounds.
To the person who claims thankful is misspelled: go back to school, or something, because that actually is the spelling of the word. Also, I hate Katherine Heigl and her inability to appear in anything remotely good or entertaining.
I'm going to agree with Jack and say that Lea Michele is the best thing to come out of this Fall TV season. Amber Riley's singing is fine, but her acting is most certainly not (which is a shame, and yet completely explains the lack of Mercedes).
So I say a deep "Thank you" to the Broadway and television gods who bring that little brunette powerhouse to my television every Wendesday night.
*And she's the one who needs the recording contract. Maybe she can have Amber do some back-up vocals. ;)
I hadn't heard that Dollhouse was cancelled. I'm thankful that Fox was the good guy who gave a show more episodes than its ratings merited, and that Whedon fans will have to admit that the guy's been coasting for about ten years.
With regards to Mad Men - "Joan in tow" my rear end. There would not be a Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce to speak of without Joanie :)
If you'd mentioned V in the list somehow, you could've thrown in yet another repetitive reference to Firefly. Dying young is good for a show, it stays cool forever.
I'm happy Community has a spot on the list.
I'm a bit confused as to what exactly Bones, House, and Heroes are supposed to learn from Mad Men. More smoking on Heroes, more boozing on House?
Don't agree that Whedon's been coasting. I don't think that his work has been so accessible since Buffy, but if you re-watch an episode, you'll see a lot more depth in the writing. I hate that shallow, mindless shows like 21/2 Men go on forever, yet some of my favorite shows are overlooked. One of the best shows ever was American Gothic, yet it only lasted one season.
And Heather, you're right about the spelling of thankful. I was so happy to see you point it out, didn't notice anyone erroneously correcting you. You've made the forces of correct spelling and proper syntax very happy...
MasterPuppeteer, I too am thankful for Cougar Town, but my hands down fav is Modern Family. Love that Always Sunny got a nod, because milk steak is amazing.
Things I am thankful for:
1- Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
2- Joan (Mad Men)
3- Supernatural giving the Apocalypse a break.
4- Mad Men season finale
5- Dayman
6- Walter & Jesse (Breaking Bad)
7- And some breakups: Don & Betty, Walter & Skyler
I am thankful that TNT picked up SouthLAnd. Can't wait to see the new episodes.
In response to this: "To the person who claims thankful is misspelled: go back to school, or something, because that actually is the spelling of the word." I was actually talking about the comment made by "words" which said: "I will be thankfull when TWOP gets spell checkers and editors again." I thought it was amusing that the person complaining about spell checking didn't spell check. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm Canadian, so I already had my Thanksgiving, but...
I'm thankful for Misha Collins and the wonderful Castiel.
I am thankful for Supernatural making Thursday my favourite day of the week.
I am thankful that Glee makes me smile AND yell. And especially for Jane Lynch.
I am thankful that Lana Lang is gone.
I am even more thankful I'm not watching Smallville.
I am thankful for discovering Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
I with LauraT
I'm thankful for:
1) Sam and Dean
2) The Vampire Diaries
3) TWOP - Jacob, Demian, Lulubates, Cindy
4) True Blood
I) Glee
2) Nathan Fillion
3) Chuck getting more episodes (which I'd add to your recap list)
4) Survivor (Russell is too entertaining)
COMMUNITY COMMUNITY COMMUNITY COMMUNITY COMMUNITY best new show in a long, long time. Glad to see it on this last, baffled that it's not everybody's new favorite show.
I agree about Community, Mad Men, Modern Family and Glee...but I am also thankful for Greek. I blew this show off at first because I figured I was too "old" to watch it, but it turned out to be one of the funniest, smartest and most moving shows on TV.
And as of last night, I'm thankful that Charles Pratt has been fired as Head Writer of All My Children! Maybe the show will have a chance to reclaim its former glory.
Nobody does finales like Joss Whedon? Did you guys see a different Buffy finale than I did, since the one I saw, I imagine there would be a bunch of people who could have done better.
Don't get the love for Glee or Nathan Fillion. Glee is watchable, but overrated...and Nathan Fillion can be very annoying and grating.
As for the KH bashing...it gets old. And yeah, she has crap writing. Izzy was a fun character you could root for in the first 2 and 1/2 seasons. But it wouldn't be TWOP without either her or Olivia Wilde getting a negative comment or 3. I miss the older days of TWOP...still a decent site, bit nowhere near as great as it once was.
I am thankful for the wonderful Modern Family, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, SOA, Dexter, Curb, The Mentalist, True Blood, Californication, Supernatural and The Office.
Good point DB, reminding us about Greek. Really enjoyed most of the first season, but then up here in Canada it disappeared and I can't find it anywhere. Maybe the CITY TV execs will read this and put it back on the air...happy thanksgiving americanos!
I am thankful for Californication and Dexter. The two best shows on tv right now.
Heather, re: your comment about the misspelling "thankfull"--just wanted to say that I got what you meant and had a chuckle along with you! It was rather ironic. :)
I don't think TWOP should be ragged on too much for their typos--it's just fast typing and posting to meet our demand for recaps, and in those situations mistakes happen--obviously! :)
Am thankful for pretty much all on the list (though I never watched Dollhouse), but mostly I am thankful to "Fringe" for getting the Awesomeness of Cool that is Lance Reddick back on my TV.
Thankful for NCIS, just getting into NCIS LA,Love Lie To Me, The Big Bang Theory love them all, but hope they don't carry the Leonard & Penny romance too much longer, Cougar Town, The Mentalist after reading earlier comment about what if?? Red John wow got me thinking, but remember the episode with the blind woman and Red John wouldn't she have picked up on Patrick then? Glee but oh the wife of Mr Shue annoys me, love the dance & singing routines.
other guilty pleasures are Burn Notice, Drop Dead Diva, White Collar, Saving Grace, The Closer and The Forgotten, Fringe. Just getting into Flash Forward. Bones, Supernatural,Criminal Minds kep me entertained.
Thank you for including Community in the list! I thougt I was the only person in the world who appreciated this wonderful-wonderful tv serie. (But I still think I'm the only person in Spain)
I'm thankful for Lie to Me, I love that little show. (Mmmm, Brendan Hines.)
I am thankful that LOST is returning soon.
I am thankful for Mad Men and HIMYM.
I quit watching Grey's solely because I found Katherine Heigl intolerable, so TWOP may bash to its heart content. I think that this site has gone down in quality since the days of Sars and Wing for many reasons, but that certainly isn't one of them. Still, I'm thankful for TWOP.
Good list. I also agree with DB - I'm thankful for an excellent season of Greek, and for Cappie and Casey getting back together, fittingly, on Thanksgiving!
I am thankful for Full House reruns - I love Stephanie Tanner!!!!! (pin a rose on your nose)
I'm thankful for Castle, the wonderful Community, Fringe, Modern Family, Glee (in all its cheesy glory), The Soup, Project Runway (Carol Hannah should have won and got together with that cute guy), House - even though it annoys me, Abed being Batman in Community, Misfits (a new UK show), The Mentalist, True Blood, Sam in his jeans in True Blood....
I second the person on this list who was thankful for FlashForward; I am too, because after watching (and enjoying) almost nothing but reality TV and procedurals for years, it's wonderful to get attached to a show with a long, complicated story to tell.
I'm thankful that I missed an episode of Heroes at the beginning of this season and stopped watching. There are so many better shows on tv, like when I discovered Mad Men and Modern Family. Also thankful for:
Glee
Chuck
Kristen Wiig on SNL
How I Met Your Mother
Abed on Community
I'm thankful for many shows already cited, but is there anybody out there as thankful for Medium as I am? I have never seen marriage and child-raising depicted as realistically on any weird-themes television show. The sibling rivalry between Ariel and Bridget is made of win! And Joe and Allison's relationship? Never saw such fighting and loving on a consistent basis, except maybe back with Lucy and Ricky.
Where is the love for "Sons of Anarchy" - the best Drama on television -- better than "Mad Men" this year. Kurt Sutter should be holding up the Emmy this year, not Matt Weiner or Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm"'s best season ever? Peeing on the picture of Jesus - so wrong to laugh but just so damn funny.
Also thankful for "The League" proving that F/X is learning how to make comedies as edgy and well made as its Drama series. This is what a funny show about male friends in suburbia looks like. This and "Its Always Sunny" are the two funniest shows on Thursday, far superior to NBC's vastly overrated lineup. Unlike "Community" these shows are actually funny on a weekly basis.
I've already posted my list, and can't believe I forgot to put on Better off Ted!
I'm thankful any time I read a post at TWOP that doesn't keep ragging on Bones for not your meeting expectations for last season's finale. Sadly, I'm not thankful very often. Please move past it already. You might find that this season has been a lot of fun (for which I really am thankful).
"Nobody does finales like Joss Whedon? Did you guys see a different Buffy finale than I did, since the one I saw, I imagine there would be a bunch of people who could have done better."
So very true. He coasts on his publicity machine and the fanboys who try and bully anyone who's not interested in his badly-planned tosh.
Witness his recent sneers at Terminator and Batman.
Nolan and Bale made two great films that Whedon and Fillion can only dream of.
I'm so very thankful for Vampire Diaries! (not so much that we have to wait 2 months for the next one...) Also agree with the poster who said they're thankful for missing an episode of Heroes and not bothering with it anymore. The rest, in no particular order: Dexter, Supernatural, Burn Notice, The Soup, The Mentalist, Castle, White Collar, True Blood... and more I'm sure I'll think of after I post this.
I am thankful for all the TWoP staff that keep me entertained at work. I am also thankful that I dont know any people who dislike the site but still bother to comment.. blurgh.
I'm very thankful for a 3rd season of Chuck and even more grateful that NBC seems to be doing a great job of promoting the show's early return in January. Now if the WB would only release the DVD's in time for Christmas I'd be ecstatic...I could get my friends and family caught up over the holiday. Whic reminds me...marathoning shows over X-mas vacation is another thing I'm thankful for in this modern age. Happy Turkey day all.
I'm thankful for Glee and The Office for helping me make it through my final high school exams (though i'm not thankful for Australian television for not broadcasting them)
Also thankful for a Heigl-free Greys Anatomy: I don't know if its her absence but something has been AWESOME this season.
Slightly thankful for How I Met Your Mother although I haven't been feeling the new season.
Thankful that I gave up on Smallville LONG ago
