TWoP 10: Favorite Reality Stars Of the Season

TWoP 10: Favorite Reality Stars Of the Season

For a welcome change this fall, the villains of weren't the main focus of our reality TV attention. Instead, there's been a pleasantly surprising number of genuinely nice people on unscripted series that we've really adored - or at the very least that have kept us amused without resorting to scheming or screaming. While we don't usually watch reality shows for sweet folks that we'd actually like to be friends with (or in some cases, adopt and give a loving home to -- we're looking at you, Shambo), these personalities recently wormed their way into our jaded little hearts:

10. Sarah (Real World/Road Rules Challenges)
We didn't watch the 480th season of The Real World set in Brooklyn, so Sarah was a pretty new face to us. But she won us over by admitting that the only reason she even did Real World was so that she could go on these challenges. That's the competitive spirit. She's strong, a little off-beat and manages to keep a smile on her face even when there are fistfights happening all around her. We look forward to seeing her again on The Duels 8-35.

9. Shay (The Biggest Loser)
As the largest contestant ever on the show, Shay was prone to emotional breakdowns. A lot of them. But hey, she's had a sucky life, so if she wants to cry while Jillian beats her to a pulp, we don't take issue. Shay was a sweet, caring woman who had a troubled past that included being raised by a drug-addicted mother and living on the streets. She was this show's version of Precious, but she stayed positive and she's gonna look hot when she's skinny.

8. Shambo (Survivor)
How can you not love Shambo? Or at least love laughing at and/or with Shambo? She's been living in her own little world, harming no one and barely realizing that she's playing a game. She easily shrugs off her failures, lamely attempts to scheme and just goes about accidentally freeing chickens and surviving against all odds. And she calls herself Shambo (on purpose!) and has a mullet (on purpose!!)

7. Ellenore (So You Think You Can Dance)
From the moment we saw her beaming smile in the audition round, she was one of our favorites. And she is able to completely transform her insanely bubbly personality into whatever style of dance they throw at her, even when she's totally out of her element and can't do the steps right. She's just a bundle of joy and a bright beacon of positivity in this so-far ordinary season.

6. Zev (The Amazing Race)
He was endearingly up front about the fact that he had Asperger's and that he was uncomfortable out of his element. And then he went and gave his jacket to a waterlogged stranger, took off his shoes to go though a puddle and happily befriended every cabbie in the world. He only competed in four legs of the race before the lost-passport incident and we would have liked to see him go much further.

5. Carol Hannah (Project Runway)
Well, it's hard not to look saintly next to a woman who earned the nickname Meana Irina. Althea sniped at people for stealing her designs, Irina complained about every person on the planet and Carol Hannah just designed her little fairy princess dresses and flitted around the workroom flirting with Logan and smiling at everyone. We're hard-pressed to remember her saying a negative thing about anyone, and if she did, it was probably well-deserved. And we adored her even more for her plucky, can-do spirit in the finale when she picked her ailing head up off the toilet and made it work.

4. Kelly Osbourne (Dancing With the Stars)
We watched her grow up on The Osbournes where she had her share of whiny teenage tendencies. But on Dancing With the Stars, she blossomed into a lovely young lady. Although she was far out of her comfort zone -- and dealing with a foot injury -- she put on a big smile, had fun with it and, most of all, laughed. It was an extra bonus to watch Ozzy and Sharon sit on the sidelines and beam proudly.

3. Kevin (Top Chef)
He cares about sustainability and the future, he likes to cook comfort food (and doesn't apologize for it in the face of undue snobbery, Michael) and he seems so laid-back in general. We want to give him a big old squeeze. He's taken every challenge as it's come and done so with kindness, instead of bickering or backstabbing. He may or may not win, but we sure would love to have him cook for us.

2. Abby (The Biggest Loser)
In the most heartbreaking story on network reality TV this season, Abby admitted that she gained weight after her husband and two children (one only a few weeks old) were killed in a car crash while she was at the doctor's. She'd given up on the world, but then somehow put on a brave face, did this show and became a proud role model. We wish the other contestants would have gone against her wishes and kept her around because there are few people more deserving of the final prize.

1. Laura (America's Next Top Model)
We'll admit it, we watch ANTM for the bitchiness and the catfights -- that's how we imagine all models behaving. But Laura and her Southern charm worked its magic on us. And the fact that this aspiring Victoria's Secret model proudly wore clothes that her grandma Wanda Sue made for her without any sense of shame or irony made her even more endearing. She was smiley and cute (until the end when she broke down into a disheveled mess after coming in second) and she made us laugh all season while overcoming dyslexia to boot.

How is that Jersey Shore was on last night, and yet there is no plan to re-cap it? It makes Rock of Love look like Inside the Actors Studio!

(I agree with most of this list-but Jersey Shore is going to be EPIC.)

Totally agree on Laura from ANTM. She might be the most likeable person who's EVER been on TV.

I couldn't agree more with some of these choices. I don't watch all of these shows, but the ones I do, I agree with your choices. It broke my heart when Zev and his teammate were disqualified. It just goes to show you that you don't have to be a douchebag. You may not win, but people will respect you more.

I found Shay's eyes disturbingly dead. Like maybe 20% of what she saw around her was registering.

I'm finding SYTYCD's Legacy and Kathryn particularly likeable this year. Coming into the Top 20, I expected them to be the most annoying pair of the season, but by the end of their second performance (and clip package), I was totally sold. I love them. I want them both in the finale. And then I want to go to Disney World with them.

Agree on Kelly O. And with the above poster on Legacy/Kathryn. Never have two reality contestants made me do such a 180 on them. Not as fond of "quirky" Ellenore, but then it's maybe because I made the mistake of reading her tweets written in some kind of annoying ersatz Japanese patois.

I don't watch most of these shows, but of the ones I do, agree with three of the choices and heartily disagree with Angel about choosing Shambo.
She is as harmless as a skunk - won't disfigure you but she'll certainly leave a bad taste in your mouth (& the rest of your body). I see her as the female equivalent of Russell - but without his brains and strength. She is always giggling manicially, as if she was some super villain out of a Spiderman movie, but without the entertainment factor. She can't leave Survivor soon enough, in my humble opinion.
But I totally agree with Angel over the adorableness of Zev and Carol Hannah. And I really liked Laura although I didn't mind her not winning. Nicole was just as sweet, but she never said anything negative about another model. I'm pretty sure Laura said a couple of things about Nicole in the solo camera interviews, that had me rooting a little bit more for the odd redhead. I'm pretty sure she'll have a good modelling career (in the petite world), so I don't mind her not winning.
I hope somebody gives Zev a job after seeing him in the Amazing Race. I think he is my favourite racer of all time and I respect how his partner treated him. Both very likable people.

Couldn't agree more about Abby! She was fabulous, and I really miss her on TBL.

I really don't know about Shambo. She really seemed to ostracize herself and took things way too personally. I can't respect the game of someone who votes so emotionally.

I would maybe add Bryan from Top Chef to this list. He helped Kevin out with an Elimination Challenge, has a dorky laugh when nervous, and makes silly jokes that kind of get brushed over. Yes, I know he is related to Michael but he shouldn't have to suffer for it.

Shambo? What about Russell? Survivor: Samoa would suck without him, even if he is a major league asshole. And he's currently taking apart the Galu majority that's too stupid to play. Shambo's a weird mix of Sue Hawk, Denise and Dre/Dreamz. She's not for everybody.

Sarah?!? I don't think so. She's basically a groupie and she's made eyes towards Kenny, one of the biggest woman-haters you'll ever meet. How about Cohutta? He had to take down Wes and Syrus before losing to Darrell. Hutty's good people, a rarity on the Challenges.

Kelly was really that good? Sorry I missed her. No wobblers at all? I'm guessing Jack will do DWTS inside of two years.

Agree totally on Laura from ANTM - she was just delightfully sweet and straightforward. Also adore Kevin and Carol Hannah, and I agree with the other commenter that Bryan from Top Chef should be right up there with Kevin. Not only is he cute and dorky, helpful and seemingly a nice guy, he seems genuinely happy for his often douche-y little brother when he does well.

I don't agree with Shay from TBL being sweet, nor do I agree with her being hot when she "gets skinny". If she ever does lose a substantial amount, all that saggy skin's going to look worse than fat.

Abby's cool, though.

Shay? Are you kidding? Her sense of entitlement was as huge as her ass.

Shay was a whiny brat who acted liked everyone owed it to her to let her win, and kept repeating her sob story lie of having no one supporting her at home. Shambo is insecure and crabby and quick to form grudges. Laura was likable at first but by the last episode was taking potshots at Nicole left and right. Were you watching the same shows I was? Natalie from Survivor and Nicole from ANTM are far more likable, in my opinion.

Top Chef has two contestants that fit this catagory. Kevin is an excellent choice, but I would also add Bryan, who is also an all around nice guy.

Shay? Seriously? Whiny, backstabbing Shay who felt she was entitled to stay on the show just because she was the fattest of the fat despite rarely bringing it on the scale?

Shambo? No, no, no.

Totally agree with others about Shay. She never had anything nice to say about ANYONE and was constantly complaining. With the amount of weight she had to lose, the pounds should have been melting off, but she spent most of her time feeling sorry for herself and cursing those who didn't feel sorry for her to really work on her weight loss. Those who sacrificed their spot on the ranch for her were the real nice ones...she didn't deserve their generosity. Was never happier to see anyone get voted off the show....well...except for Tracy.

Abby rules! i wish she stayed longer....

I love Laura from ANTM and her grandma clothes.

I however am not as enthusiastic about your support for Carol Hannah. Yeah, she's inoffensive, but this season there was not enough competitive drama. I loved Meana Irena because unlike some contestants (Nicolas) she wasn't mean to get air time. She was mean because that's who she is, and she was the only designer with the talent to back it up.
