Conan Has a Right to Be Angry, But He's Also Being Kind of a Crybaby It was refreshing last Friday when Conan addressed the late night disaster he was embroiled in on his (for now) show with some pointed barbs at NBC. Then on Tuesday, he issued a strongly worded and heartfelt letter to the citizens of Earth about the harm he felt the network was doing to the franchise he loves, and to him personally, and it only strengthened his cause. But is it just me, or has he kind of been acting like a bitch since then?

Don't get me wrong -- I love Conan, I have tremendous nostalgia for his 12:35 AM show, and I agree that it appears that he's been jerked around by NBC's bungling of their entire post-10 PM roster, but CoCo's kind of coming across as a baby with his shows the last two nights. He made his point, and quite eloquently, with Tuesday's letter, and the entire internet rallied behind him -- are jokes like this really necessary two days later?

From last night's show: "Hosting The Tonight Show has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me -- and I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life. Unless Jay Leno wants to do it too."

Yikes. To be fair, he did open the show with a less vicious joke about practicing the phrase "Who ordered the mochachino grande?" a lot lately -- a reference to his seemingly impending unemployment, but that second joke just feels like an unnecessary assault at this point. None of us likes Jay Leno much (and it's worth noting that he's sunk to this level as well in his monologues this week), and he should have stayed retired, yes, but it's NBC who's trying to push Conan out of his 11:35 PM slot, and though you could say it's his own fault, this thing is also embarrassing for Jay -- he was canceled, too, after all. He's going to be treated better than Conan is by the network in the end, but as of now, Conan's made his case and then some. Just do the mature thing and lay off the personal attacks.

Between those jokes, the Howie Mandel Deal Or No Deal parody, jokes about being available for children's parties, and this "Hitler reacts to..." parody involving controversial world leaders...

... It's just a lot of bitterness towards the situation on his show. Exclusively, actually. Conan hasn't devoted more than 90 seconds to any other topic all week, and you can bet that if there is any truth to today's rumors that Jeff Zucker is trying his damndest to keep Conan off the air for the next three-and-a-half years, there will be another show full of NBC/Leno insults tonight, and tomorrow night, and likely all next week as well. Conan's angry, and he has a right to be (as much right as any multi-millionaire has these days, that is), but if his show really does end next week, as some people are saying it will, is this how he wants to go out?

And as much as I hate what's being done to him, everyone said he shouldn't have moved to 11:35 from the start. He did it anyway because he wanted to take a risk and was following a dream, but he promised the new show wouldn't be much different than what he did at 12:35. The problem was that it was drastically different than what he did at 12:35. It was an awkward, confused product that didn't satisfy Conan's fanbase and didn't have enough of a voice to draw in new viewers, and as terrible as Leno taking over 10 PM was, even if scripted shows had been in those slots as Conan was initially promised, I don't think the quality of the new Tonight Show would have been any different. Accepting a 10 PM show was an unclassy overshadowing of Conan's spotlight on Leno's part, and an ill-considered plan on NBC's part, but thinking he could survive at 11:35 was also pretty foolish on Conan's part as well. Everybody's at fault here, I'm saying, and it's like Conan has zero self-awareness in regard to that and the fact that his incessant whining is doing little to maintain his high ground here. Let's just hope he lets it go and makes the most of his (alleged) final week.

I don't hear whining at all in Conan's jokes. I hear anger - lots and lots of anger - but I don't get the "whining" or "crybaby" aspect of it. Furthermore, I hope he brings in as much anger as he possibly can over the next and final week of his show and takes as many messy, barbed, poisoned-arrow shots at NBC as he can manage before the execs barge into the broadcasting room and pull the plug on it all. I hope he devotes the last ten minutes of his show to essentially burning down the set, and his contract, and every bridge emblazoned with the NBC logo that he can set fire to.

So, his behavior on Monday and Tuesday made him a folk hero and internet cause celebre- and he's supposed to stop, because you think he's whining?

Gawker, Hulu, Access Hollywood- EVERYONE is hanging on his every word WRT Leno and running recaps of it the next day, and he's supposed to, what, make jokes about Goldman Sachs and Haiti?

Seriously, your premise is kinda weak.

Yeah... I heartily disagree. I would bet that Conan would have liked to have done the show he wanted, very much like his 12:35 show, but I would guarantee that the lackey over at NBC strong-armed him into doing something 'More like Jay', and we shall hear that story once Conan is off the show. Network suits are notorious for ruining perfectly good shows. I have zero problems with him taking his anger out and showcasing it nightly, while he still has the chance. And yeah, Leno's show was cancelled, and the whole fiasco is kinda embarassing, but he's still gonna have a job after next week, so what the hell is he bitching about?

I don't see it as Conan whining or bitching, I see it as NBC and Jay getting what it coming to them. If Jay didn't want to retire, he shouldn't have signed a contract saying he would do it. If NBC wanted Conan as the Tonight Show host, they should have thrown their full support behind them, even if that meant letting Leno leave to start a show on another network.

I see your point, but IMO Conan hasn't yet worn out the topic. If he hasn't moved on to other ideas in a week or at least seriously cut back his focus, then I'll concede that he's overdoing it.

All this is still mild compared to what David Letterman does to anyone who conflicts with him in any way (i.e. jibe for months later).

I disagree with this post as well. Regardless of how rich he is (his staffers that moved cross country aren't), it is a CLASSIC case of management jerking workers around. NBC is just flat out wrong. If anything, I say, MORE CONAN and Ricky Gervais... that was pretty funny.

Does Leno have some dirt on NBC Executives? Why have they bent backwards for 17 years kissing his butt???!

To add to Cubanita's comment, Conan (and Leno too, I will admit) were forking over money from their own pockets to pay the salaries of their employees during the strike. He may be rich, but he takes care of his staff which is more than can be said about a lot of employers. He's also not the only one being jerked around since it affects everyone who moved with him. And if I was in that industry, I sure as hell would've moved with him!

You're kidding, right? Then maybe you will understand how Conan feels. He got the royal shaft after 17 years of loyal service for NBC. Maybe that's why he's pissed?

I could not disagree more. The way he has been treated is truly reprehensible. It's true that it's the same as any employee who was promised something by his boss and given something completely different. Furthermore, I simply do not understand those that can't see that Leno is behind this whole thing. Why don't they put Leno on after Conan and Fallon? Because he wouldn't stand for that and because only senior citizens find his humor even remotely funny and they're all in bed by 11:30 anyway so what's the point. If Conan leaves NBC and Leno is put in as the host of the Tonight Show, then Leno will have gotten exactly what he wanted. It was a huge mistake for NBC to force him out in the first place when his show was consistently #1 in the ratings. But they did it and he refused to go quietly thus setting this whole ball in motion. I think it's disgusting and I for one am happy to see CoCo sticking it to NBC every chance he gets.

It has always been funny, and isn't awkward part of his act? He has the right to be angry, and the right to express the horrible treatment he his receiving. I know TVWP is now owned by NBC, that doesn't mean you need to be their mouthpiece. NBC is wrong, and so is Leno. He should just retire, and leave both Conan's and Fallon's shows alone.

Right, this isn't biased at all. First, TWOP tries to tell us we should be excited about this nonsense, because we'll get great programming (meanwhile, FNL's not back til April, and they've crammed in different variations on Dateline/Law&Order to fill up almost all the 10 pm slots post-Olympics). Then TWOP tries to tell us the late show drama is boring. Now, Conan's a crybaby? Conan got screwed royally recently, but he really got screwed when Leno & the NBC monkeys first took the 10 pm time slot. If you ask me, he showed a lot of restraint/class during all of that time, considering he had been set up for failure right from the beginning (despite what Jerry Seinfeld and Zucker are proclaiming). If you ask me, it's about time he took the gloves off. Also, his last few shows have been supremely funny, so I wouldn't mind remembering them as his final episodes with NBC.

So Letterman can gleefully list the details of these goings on from his desk, but Conan can't complain about what's actually happening to him? Is he supposed to pretend it's not happening? When Jimmy Kimmel does his own show as Jay Leno and Letterman is chronicling all of this? Pretty much everyone is discussing this and showing outrage of varying degrees. Conan is allowed to voice his own outrage on his own show for as long as it's still his show. He's not acting like a bitch. He's reacting to a shit situation. It took a year for him to get settled when he was hosting Late Night. It took Leno 18 months to get The Tonight Show running smoothly when he first started. NBC is going to lose a truly talented man and come off looking beastly in the process, as will Leno if he reclaims his spot as The Tonight Show host.

I don't think it's possible for him to talk about anything else. and yeah the last few shows have been very bitter, but I would rather have that then have him try to fake being his happy, goofy self when he clearly is not. The only thing I can do is not watch a second of Jay's new old show Sadly it wont matter since I'm not a neilson member, but if is ratings are even a little bit below average, I will be happy.

Ah, I'm glad you said it cause I'm thinking it. I'm Team Conan too obviously (not old/humorless) but his bitterness is palpable, and I think in the future he might regret showing that. He has always been so classy, he could go out striding on such high moral ground. Or, even better, he could take Rick Gervais's advice and pull out all the stops and be wildly himself these last few days. Whichever it is, just stop berating Jay, Conan, we all already know how you feel. Oh--except if this post *was* influenced by NBC, mild shame on the author.

Conan is entitled to make Jay remarks. It's part of the job and he's always poked some fun at Jay. To say he's being whiny is not really 'getting it'. He followed his dream and you are faulting him for not having the self awareness to know he wouldn't do a good job? Really? Have you even been watching? What kind of criticism is that anyways? Holy hell!

And "incessant whining?" It's been like 5 days! Give me a break!

Yes, it is just you. He has every right to be angry at someone who's betrayed him (or make jokes about it, given it is a huge piece of news in the tv world and just about every late night host is making said jokes. Why can't Conan?) This mess that NBC, Zucker, and Leno made would be forever associated with Conan. However much the compensation NBC does end up giving him, it won't be enough for the humiliation and the loss of something he was contractually promised to years ago, not to mention the backstab of a network which he was home to for almost 20 years.

If NBC didn't want him in the first place, or if Leno wanted to stay on The Tonight Show til the cows come home, they should have let Conan go and pursue other networks years ago. They should not have signed a contract promising him a show they didn't want to give him in the first place but promised anyway only because they didn't want other networks to have him, and then pull the rug out from under him in 7 months, publicize his demotion, and then proceed to BLAME Conan for their own mistakes and crappy network.

No, Conan is not being a crybaby. He's being the most level headed as he could be under these circumstances.

I hope everyone will remember this and NOT watch Leno's The Tonight Show ever again. Hell, I'm going to stand clear of anything Zucker has anything to do with.

Actually, here's some elaboration:

Maybe you're lucky enough to have kept your job through the recession. Maybe you joined NBC/TWOP and all has been well for you. Some of us, not so damn much. Many of us have been royally screwed over in a way that is VERY reminiscent of what's happening to Conan right now.

Sure, he's a millionaire and I was a contract worker with no health insurance or severance. But the dynamic of working hard for a company that makes promises, then cuts you loose in the shittiest possible manner, leaving you stranded (I guarantee you Conan feels responsible for the 150 employees who moved with him)? That's familiar.

So whoop de doo for your job security. Some of us are watching Conan take it to NBC in a way we only WISH we'd been able to when our bosses pulled the same crap. And we're enjoying it.

I disagree big time. Yes Conan's 11:35pm show was a watered down version of his later show, (no Masturbating Bear!) because he was trying to appeal to Leno's old audience. However, I feel this whole debacle has brought that Conan back, he has never been funnier and more like the old Conan and unfortunate we have NBC's asshole behavior to thank for it. I've enjoyed watching it, although I do feel a little guilty considering the circumstances, and to be honest I enjoy the hammering Leno and NBC are getting. It's well deserved.

I think you really don't get it Mindy. He is not just doing it out of wounded pride or vanity. His anger is not just about his own situation. He is angry on behalf of all the staffers who work for him and moved across the country to continue doing so. People who might be out of a job just so that NBC can hold on to Leno. He has every right to bitch about that as long as he likes! (Also ..he is beig very funny doing so)

Great point by Grace. I've never really related Conan's situation to mine, or even in a larger cultural context and how it reflects the real world reality of outsourcing and downsizing. I had to be graceful about my exit from my previous job even though I felt I was wronged and screwed over by my employer. I did not feel better about taking the high road. Instead I was disgusted that I didn't leave the office waving my two middle fingers and telling ever customer in the lobby to run for their lives. That was really what those bastards deserved. So thanks Conan, I will now feel like I am living vivaciously through you.

It'd be better if Jeff Zucker would fight his own PR fight instead of having to trot out an 80-year-old like Dick Ebersol. From the start NBC should have owned up to their mistakes, ensure Leno comes off as a victim of their stupidity nearly (as much as O'Brien) and get a quicky divorce with minimal fuss; appeasement all the way.

But no, they want to stiff Conan on his contract money and so demote him hoping he'd quit. A hail mary and more idiotic because the blowback is what you see now. How long until advertising buyers stop viewing NBC as a joke?

This is a load of crap. I have to say it. First of all, I never noticed any hint of whining in Conan's jokes. And you're calling it incessant! I'm gobsmacked. He was expressing himself about the situation, as he's allowed to do. I also didn't see any bitterness, but let's say I did. He doesn't have a right to be bitter after what happened to him? And you say he hasn't devoted more than 90 seconds to any other topic, to which I must ask, "really???" You can't be counting the interviews because he doesn't bring it up with the guests--they do. I could go on and on about this, but I won't.

Finally, did TWoP really admonish someone to be "mature" and "lay off the personal attacks"? Mindy, you have the biggest pair of cojones I've ever heard of. For over a year I've barely been able to get through one blog on this site without seeing some mean-girls style hating on Katherine Heigl in the most random places. And no, I have no loyalty to her in particular, but the amount of bashing she took on this site galled me. And the American Idol recaps so far have also been super vicious. Given some of the things I've seen written here compared to the utter grace, generosity, and class Conan has shown...you guys don't deserve to serve him his coffee. Jay and NBC have wronged Conan, so he's whining. Heigl and others have done nothing to you guys, so in your case it's just "not sparing the snark." Unbelievable. Also, after watching Conan's finale last night and the kind words he had for NBC (even though they don't deserve it), I hope you feel like an asshole for this blog entry.
