As Modern Family's fantastic first season has progressed, it's just gotten better and funnier, and its characters have become more and more likable with each episode as the show has quickly grown into one of the best on television. With one glaring exception -- Julie Bowen's character Claire. While all the characters on the show are flawed by design, Claire is the standard irreversibly shrill sitcom wife surrounded by otherwise transgressive characters. Even when she does redeem herself by letting her husband win a foot race, or begrudgingly jumping into a pool with her clothes on to satisfy the stepmother she called a gold-digger, she's still a joyless, shrew of a woman, and that's a damn shame.
The difference between her character's flaws and the rest of the cast's is that not only is there nothing endearing about her, she isn't trusted with the funny either. Her husband is a lecherous idiot who screws up constantly, but he's an undeniably lovable lecherous idiot, and he gets the best lines on the show. Her father is a bit backwards in his thinking, but he strives to evolve, has a dog butler, and the scene where he spared little Manny from knowing what a jerk his deadbeat dad was would forgive him almost any insensitive remark he could ever make. And Cam is an over-the-top gay stereotype who should probably offend more than he does, but c'mon, you can't not love that bleeding heart of an impromptu Lion King musical stager. But when pressed to come up with Claire's good points, I really can't come up with any. If she's not humorlessly yelling, nagging, fretting, or complaining, she's, well, off-screen.
So, what happened? Is she the genre normative put there so as not to freak out unadventurous viewers or something? Or is the insufferable high-strung wife such an ingrained archetype they didn't even consider messing with it? But feminist gut reactions aside, it's just irksome to have a whole ensemble of great characters to root for except one for seemingly no reason. The show could still work if Claire were more than a miserable porn-hating (for her husband anyway -- I understand not loving her 10-year-old possibly being into it), expensive entertainment system destroying (she can't understand universal remotes! She's just a woman!), unfunny shrew -- in fact, it would be better for it.
This show is so good that I'd still stick with it the way it is for years to come, but I remain hopeful that the writers will quickly realize that Julie Bowen is capable of more, and that the show would be better if all its characters were sympathetic and, above all, funny, as well as flawed. And, you know, that not all non-trophy wives are bitches. It would be nice.

I think we got a few glimpses of out-of-the-box moments from her. Her valentine's day hug coupons (although Phil got the best line in "It's great, because it's something that's usually free, but now it's official!") and her dressing up for the firemen are examples that come to mind. It's nice to see a sitcom where the wife can be the lovable screwup from time to time, and I'd like to see more moments like that.
Have we been given any reasons to love Haley yet? I don't remember any...
I couldn't disagree more! Her character is the sort of seemingly normal everywoman who is trapped in the midst of a crazy family, but she's really just a crazy as the rest of her wonderful family and, best of all, she knows it.
I also liked her comb-sheath.
Don't forget Claire's geeky comb crafts at the birthday party, her insecure mom-spying of Haley alone with a boy and her silly ice dancing in the parking lot. I agree that she could use more loveable moments, though, and so could her brother. Maybe they really are the most screwed up/repressed people on the show (thanks mom and dad). Otherwise it's a fantastic series! Love me some Manny!
What about when she let her brother regain some lost glory when they did their figure skating routine out in the middle of the parking lot? I agree with neciamorris. She's the most "normal" and thus, the most beleaguered upon.
I did tear up when she told Phil "I just love you so much and I'm afraid you'll never know how much" when apologizing for bringing Edward Norton to their house in the Valentine's Day episode.
She also checks the "improbably attractive" box of the sitcom wife character type. You know, assuming the scene of her in undergarments wasn't too subtle.
I disagree. I quite like her character and her seeming awareness of her own craziness as well as that of her family.
I think Claire has had more lovable moments than Mitchell has- the comb sheath, the coupons, the figure skating.
Mitchell seems far more like the uptight "wife" character.
Wow...totally disagree with this. Love Julie Bowen and the character. She is an equally great part of this ensemble. Love the show.
Ditto on the comb sheath and the ice skating. My favorite scenes with Claire are those with her and Mitchell.
Also, "I want to do you, do you, in the moonlight..." Best song ever.
I think this is a case of the way sitcoms portray the typical wife. She is hot, young, but a demanding shrew who doesnt "get" her husband or kids. The other characters are indeed well drawn and not typical stock sitcom characters. But Julie Bowen's Claire could easily be on any crappy sitcom, cant you see her on The George Lopez Show, or According to Jim, or Everybody Loves Raymond? Just like wives in commercials, there is a typical stock character for the hot, young, white, shrew of a wife of any kind of husband. Its unfortunate, and you are correct on this blog post, the show is almost perfect except for Claire.
Totally agree, though you left out her most irritating trait: smugness. The way she treats Phil as a fourth child is inexecusable, even if he does ask for it. The "coal digger" comment damns her, too. And personally, I don't even find her that hot, though that may just be that it's hard to be seen that way standing next to Sofia Vergara.
There is a thought that women object to being the "zany, madcap" one (like Lucy or Gracie Allen, of old). In a post-Mary Tyler Moore world, the wife needs to be Respectable - the husband can be a drooling simpleton, but the wife must always maintain the upper hand. The only source of humor for the wife is mocking her husband. Sofia Vergara gets away with not being a shrew because she specifically plays "the wife's worst nightmare".
BTW, all of Phil and Claire's kids are straight out of Sitcom 101. If they went away, I would not miss them.
I'm thinking maybe they should get Julie Benz to pull a "2nd Darren" to the Claire character. Maybe then the character will actually be interesting.
I agree with you. She is us. Try to be as normal as possible, but surrounded by insanity.
She has the hardest job on the sitcom. Playing straight man to so many crazy characters is an extremely difficult task. She is the marker, the control. She is how we measure our reactions.
And, she is funny.

I agree as well, Houstonbch. I think that if there isn't a "control" person to see for the normalcy aspect, people can't fully appreciate the weirdness and funniness of every other character.
I relate the most to her character and don't feel like she's a naggy shrew at all. She's just a good mom who tries to be goofy but ultimately she's dorky and uncool. I love her.
Really, really disagree with Mindy Monez. Claire is a perfectly likable character. I really enjoyed her takedown of Alex when the girl was "screwing around" with her. Great stuff, even if completely mortifying your child is not recommended parenting!

Well that is just one way of taking a look at things. It's good to have ones thoughts shaken up now and again so you're able to re-examine your own personal bias and habits in thinking. I may not go along with everything, but I appreciate your individual insight.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
