Let me just say I was dreading last night's Saturday Night Live. Charles Barkley? A former pro basketball player and current color commentator, who's not even playing the game anymore? This must be a train wreck, right? Actually, it ended up not being totally bad. Barkley's contributions were pretty minor, and his monologue was pretty weak, but he grounded the funniest series of MacGruber bits since that time MacGruber was strung out on heroin.

In them, MacGruber mispronounces his black assistant Darrell's name and tries to be politically correct, but is actually a racist and ends up just offending everybody.

And Barkley cracked up early on in the latest "Scared Straight" sketch, playing Kenan Thompson's father, causing Bill Hader (and almost Thompson) to lose it:

Andy Samberg was a letdown this week with a weak digital short and an annoying turn as a Make-a-Wish kid sitting in the commentary box at a basketball game. Well before the 12th time he said "Nothing but the bottom of the net!" we (and Barkley) were ready for it to end:

But Samberg made it up to everybody with his turn as Nicolas Cage on Weekend Update, which was a spot-on impression, although it would have been nice to see him reference Cage movies besides National Treasure:

While the ad for Barkley Bank was a one-note joke about Barkley's gambling losses, Bill Hader's ad for a voyeuristic insurance company more than made up for it:

And, in closing, this Kristen Wiig character needs to die:
