10 Actors Who Should Make Like Evangeline Lilly and Quit Acting Evangeline Lilly has said in the past that she doesn't plan on continuing her acting career after Lost ends, and with the show's final season premiering tonight (!!), that story has resurfaced, and she's sticking to it. Which is perfectly understandable; she's made her money, she's not passionate about acting, and she did the respectable thing by not quitting in the middle of it when she was somehow miserable in Hawaii. (I'm not a Kate fan, but at least she didn't Rob Lowe or Mandy Patinkin the show by throwing a tantrum and leaving prematurely.) So happy trails to Evangeline Lilly after May. These people should really get inspired and do the same.

Kelsey Grammer
Frasier is a thing of the past, back before we knew him as the American Carol and Back to You star who accused Fox of giving him a heart attack and then went on to star in the insufferably snobby and unfunny Hank. Time to just spend your days at home counting your money on your caviar abacus, Kelsey.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz
She got fired from Melrose Place, but that's not going to stop her from popping up on some other show for god knows what reason. I don't care what she does for money as long as it has nothing to do with acting or music. (Though full disclosure: "L.O.V.E." is an amazing song and karaoke jam.)

Charlie Sheen
It's impossible to know why some actors' disastrous personal lives ruin them while others get to have scandal after scandal after scandal and still bring in gangbuster ratings, but Charlie Sheen is the miraculous latter. Obviously he has some appeal I'm not seeing, but even if Two and a Half Men ever ended and he joined a show I could actually stand, there's no way to divorce his celebrity persona from his fictional one, whatever it may be. Which is sad. I can barely bring myself to watch Hot Shots these days.

Patricia Heaton
She's especially unfortunate, because it's really not that she's devoid of talent, or does a bad job on the shows she stars in; she just publicly presents herself as the most unbearable person over and over again, in companion with choosing to star in Back to You and The Middle, two bland assaults on the cause for half-decent television.

Masi Oka
Some of the actors on Heroes could bounce back if and when that show is ever canceled, but Masi Oka won't be one of them. Like Urkel doomed Jaleel White before him, Hiro has ruined Masi Oka forever. Too iconic, too annoying and too on a show no one takes seriously. But hey, at least he can go back to doing his other, better job when all is said and done.

Eliza Dushku
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: she seems like an awesome person to hang out with, but acting just isn't what she's good at. I hate to kick her when she's down, and Dollhouse and Tru Calling's cancellations were far from entirely her fault, but she shouldn't be counted on to carry a series ever again.

Brad Garrett
This was going to be Ray Romano's spot, but he's actually doing an OK job on Men of a Certain Age. Instead, I'll be asking Brad Garrett, who is way worse both on screen and in public than Romano could ever be, to please, please retire from television.

Mischa Barton
After The Beautiful Life ended amidst a rollercoaster of sad, tragic rumors about her and we heard nothing but tumultuous things from her recent guest stint on SVU, it's probably safe to say she should take an entire lifetime to get herself together. No grueling television shooting schedule is going to help her do that.

Eric Balfour
Because he's a greasy showkiller, and no manner of guest-stint ubiquity can mop that up.

Michelle Trachtenberg
Like Eliza Dushku, she seems like a lovely girl who maybe shouldn't have chosen acting as her profession. The weird thing about her is, as much as everyone hated her Buffy character, if you put those scenes against her Mercy and Gossip Girl scenes, it appears she has somehow become an even worse actor over the years.

And, obviously, Melissa George. No explanation needed.

Your bids for who should retire from acting and take up something they're better at? We're all about job placement here at TWoP.

Watch TWoP's editors discuss who should quit acting in this segment airing on the New York Nonstop cable news channel:

i don't get the Melissa George hate. Am I the only one who likes her? Not like she's the greatest ever or anything, but she's not that bad.

Dushku and Trachtenburg should simply just do movies in a supporting actress capacity.

I cannot fathom the call for Eliza to step down and stop acting. Faith was such a badass, Missy Pantone was one of the best things about "Bring It On," "Dollhouse" rocked my world (damn you, Fox Network, for canceling it like you did my beloved "Firefly")... And Eliza is freaking hot as all get out on the cover and centerfold of the Maxim issue on my bedroom end table. That's why she's my imaginary wife, you know, if she were a lesbian and I don't know, blind or stupid or something.

Don't confuse hotness with acting. Eliza can't act. Actually, I think that affects her hotness because she is so wooden and expressionless.

How about Elisha Cuthbert? Is she a bad actress or is it just the part she plays on 24? I guess we'll find out because she is on a new series now.

Yes, one of the first and only recognizable actors of Asian descent in a legitimate starring role (and no, Sun and Jin don't count) should quit forever.

Because he's not one of the 3,000 pretty sexy angsty white people on the show? Very astute observation; well done.

Eliza Dushku was good in Buffy and excellent in numerous other things. I haven't seen much of Dollhouse but just because she can't play a separate character very week doesn't make her a bad actress.

Why are you trying to make it a racial issue when it's clearly not?

Also, Eliza Dushku is only good at playing the stock Eliza Dushku character. Very good at that character, not very good at other characters.

@Dougie B - I disagree with you. Teri Hatcher, who easily has the most annoying character, can actually pull off quite a bit of range. She's been allowed to be dramatic this season, which has been working out for her. Marcia Cross is all kinds of fantastic at nuances of emotion - though this season, she just seems to whisper her way through everything. Eva Longoria can hold her own, except when it comes to crying. They're going to be alright in the future. And Dana Delaney is freakin' fantastic at being insane.

Sorry, but gotta defend my girls.

I feel like the point is being missed here with regard to Masi Oka. It has nothing to do with his acting abilities. It's the possibility that his character will take over his entire career, and he will either be typecast constantly(Kelsey Grammer) or doomed to obscurity(Jaleel White).

Wow, did you just say Teri Hatcher has range? And Marcia Cross... nuances of emotion? If she could actually move her forehead or sides of her mouth into a different expression, maybe. Eva Longoria can hold her own? She plays the stereotypical "Sassy Latina", and when asked to do anything serious and outside that comfort zone of wise-cracking sass, it's more than a little uncomfortable to watch. So, yeah, she can hold her own... with Teri Hatcher.

I will admit that the actress playing the crazy lady is spot on. But then she has to do scenes with the scene-stealing suckitude of Teri Hatcher, and I'm back to my Brickbreaker.

People were horrible to her when she was cast as Lauren Reed and her character came between Sydney and Vaughan. She got so much abuse for doing her job and I think it was shameful.

Whomever made this list deserves some credit for NOT including Katherine Heigl's name on this list. I can say honestly that I am not a huge fan of either Grey's or Izzie, along with feeling like she has no filter in off-camera situations where it might be useful (her lame criticism of Judd Apatow's writing for the women of KNOCKED UP and throwing the Grey's writers under the bus), but she does have talent and has done enough work that earned good-sized audiences that I don't think she either will need to or should give up acting.
The bulls-eye on this list belongs to Mischa Barton. She's pretty much Lindsay Lohan now, without even LL's fading reminder of a time she had some ability and wasn't a national joke.

Eric Balfour was also in the first two episodes of Buffy and that got 7 seasons. And as long as Eliza goes back to Faith-esque roles, she can stick around. Okay, I suppose I can understand the opinion about Eliza Dushku, even if I don't share it. Is it that we aren't sure she got past being Ahnold's shrieky preteen daughter on True Lies? She may not have set the world on fire with Dollhouse, but it was respectable often and sometimes much more so than that. Maybe all she needs to bring the best out of her is a guest spot on Castle or Chuck--both of which series gave Alyssa Milano (another recovering Ahnold screen daughter) and Kristin Kreuk respectively a chance to show that they either still have or have developed real chops. Until her guest spot on Chuck, I'd have expected Ms. Kreuk to make this list as another nice person who just shouldn't have taken up acting.

With Trachtenberg--I really dunno. It's like for her entire career post-Buffy she's been asked to be a low-rent Amber Tamblyn. All I can do is shrug about that.

Kelsey Grammer would do very well to just keep sticking his name on quality programming as a producer and just pop in with a guest spot every once in awhile.

Caruso definitely deserves a spot here.

It's a sad commentary on Barton's career that her high watermark for acting may end up being a turn as a child actress being faux-interviewed by Hugh Grant on Notting Hill.

Melissa George stayed off my radar until she trainwrecked Alias--but I can never forgive her for it. That supporting cast on Dollhouse was stellar--except for Ballard. So, if we were to take a vote now, I suppose we'd wish that Dollhouse had centered around Glau as Echo--bringing a little of the River-crazy into a composite (might have been in the offing if she didn't already have a doomed cult hit she was tied to)? Glau as one-note? Hmm...to each his or her own, I suppose.

CMM like Chris (Ashton) Kutcher before him is a male model who picked up acting as a side gig.

I do want to see a list of fallen heroes, ie awesome supporting actors on shows that failed but who we want back, like most of the Dollhouse cast.

I can't believe we all forgot Caruso. Maybe because he's permanently lodged in the bad actor file, you just forget about him already being there.

I have seen every single episode of Angel more times than I can count, and those are two I would happily never see again. Eliza Dushku is not an actress. Faith was a boring, stereotypical "badass sexpot" character that bugged me, and the performance just made it worse. Some of the actors and actresses who have appeared in multiple Whedon shows are awesome. Dushku is not and has never been one of those. I don't even necessarily find her that attractive. She's got a great body, but the face does nothing for me. I guess she's fine in the dark.

As for others who should retire from TV: Kathy Fucking Griffin. No talent. Not funny. Just one more member of the Asshole Generation: those who think being an asshole is the epitome of humor. Go fuck yourself, you over-exposed hack.

I think Dusku is fine in supporting roles, but what I would really like is to see her in a different role. With the exception of her cheerleader role in Bring It On, I don't think I've seen Eliza Dusku in a part where the wiring in her character's brain wasn't cockeyed in some way.

And if we're going with people who should quit acting because we find them unpleasant outside of acting, then we could probably increase this list to 50 or more without a lot of effort.

You sit safely tucked behind your keyboard and insult all of these people who are just trying to make a living for their families and make a career for themselves in spite of a tremendous amount of ridicule. There are way too many factors involved in a production to solely blame one person. Writing varies from show to show. Blame the actor. Directing. Production value. Who gets blamed? The actor. Excellent point! While I'm not saying that some of these actresses aren't without problems or blame (and SOME are lacking in acting skill), I think it does speak to a continuing disparity between men and women in Hollywood (and, you know, the world). Thankfully, there are, however, many great roles for women on television (more so than in film).

Honestly, I'd much rather see the last of Kelsey Grammar and Charlie Sheen (despite my love of Frasier and middle school crush on Charlie Sheen) than most of the women on the list.

I do have to second the Elizabeth Rohm vote.

Is this your first time here? Have you READ some of the content of this website? If you don't like honest opinions on just about everything related to movies and tv, then you should probably leave now. And don't come back. Seriously, not everyone who doesn't agree with you is a fat housewife or loser in his mom's basement stuffing his face with cheetos. Get off the internet if you can't handle critcism, dork.

Am I the only one who likes Kelsey Grammer? He's great as "Frasier" but definitely needs to spread his wings some more. Sideshow Bob is probably my favorite Simpsons character ever.

People I would gladly add to this list: Chad Michael Murray (shudder), Ray Romano (painfully unfunny), Kara from American Idol (it's pretty much scripted now, so yes, it counts as "acting"), and the entire cast of The Hills.

David Caruso is just so awful that it's hilarious, I'd be heartbroken if he stopped "acting".

In reply to truth, while the acidity of your comments make me sad, I appreciate that you brought up the fact that the actors do take the most of the blame for the negative impressions of a TV show (with the writers suffering second). Making a decent, watchable show requires quite good contributions from all productions fronts. I certainly get frustrated by the fact that there is a surplus of people who want very much to act/write/direct/produce etc and yet, a lot of shows turn out bland at best. But I guess that's what makes excellent television rare and kind of magical.

I actually feel sorry for Elisha Cuthbert having to deal with how awfully 24 has written Kim Bauer over the years. Even if you take out the cougar incident, there is still so much suck that (insert your favorite female Hollywood screen star) could have saved the role.

Which is kind of a shame bevcause with a little bit of tweaking they could have made Kim so much of a better character without having to change the big 24 story arcs as a whole.

Jay, looks like your man boobs are itching, keyboard warrior. Guess I touched a nerve. And that's not even an ounce of what an actor probably feels when you hop online and mess with their livelihood. I know for a fact you are a fat, celebrity obsessed moron who will reap what you sow. Remember you read this when karma bites you and you end up on the chopping block.

Wow, I think "truth" is angrier than most trolls on serious political message boards. do you really mean to say that no one who is not an actor is ever allowed to criticize acting? Does that work for other professions, too? "Reap what you sow"; I love it. Your getting biblical about an internet message board the impacts absolutely nothing. No one is going to read these boards and decide to blackball the actors mentioned. You are free to agree or disagree, but you make it sound like by posting here people are summarily executing these actors' careers.

Okay, rejoice celeb bashing fatties for this is my last post. Nan, the networks absolutely read and consider these boards, the boards at IMDB, their show website boards and the like. I'm not making it "sound" like you are executing careers, YOU ARE. Rest your head on that pillow when you elect to "criticize." Whether you believe it or not, it's (no pun intended) the truth.

I think the networks care more about little things like ratings and money than what people here say. Ad hominem attack really makes your posts sound immature and unconvincing. I didn't "bash" anyone in my post, although I'm sure you didn't notice that. Furthermore, if an actor is so very bad that people won't watch their shows, then they can always find another line of work. I'm only on here today because I have a late meeting that doesn't start until 6:00 and therefore have some time to waste. Calling people fat and lazy is not reasoning or persuasive. Are you a bitter out of work actor or something? Were you just fired, or your show cancelled? I'm a teacher; my students and their parents are my employers. If I can't teach, shouldn't my students and their parents be allowed to complain? Actors are employees. Their job is to act. If people don't like their acting and won't watch their shows, should they not be fired, or learn to act better? People are on here saying "I love show X, but can't stand actor Y, so I stopped watching." I still doubt that these messages are as important as ratings, though. There are thousands of message boards online, and they represent such small population samples and are by no means broad or random enough to matter statistically.

What a fascinating perspective you have, truth: basement-dwelling "fatties" who rule Hollywood through highly influential blog postings! Read it and cower, unjustly maligned actors!

Truth, honey, you sound like you've tried to be an actor and either it didn't work out, or you got fired and you are having a nuclear reaction to it possibly being due to the quality of your work. Some of us DO know what it's like to be an actor and see negative reviews online. It sucks. You grow a thicker skin (and seriously, if auditioning hasn't prepared you for criticism at this point, you're a lost cause) and STOP READING BLOGS. You're clearly too precious for this atmosphere.

Of course there's someone at networks reading blogs -- it's a counterbalance to ratings and demos, a quick and inexpensive way to test the audience's mood. But a blog posting does not get an actor fired. Many many many blog postings across multiple sites, along with critics who hate the actor and sliding ratings -- then, yeah, the actor might be in trouble. But 100% the fault of internet commenters? No.

Anyhow, congratulations on apparently finding a career where no one criticizes you ever. But if you do happen to be an actor? Posting on ANY messageboard is a bad idea, don't do it. You're more traceable than you think, and if you slip and give out the wrong bit of information, the bad PR is going to drown you. It doesn't help that you make yourself sound like a complete twat.

Gwenyth Paltrow - because she saps the energy out of any role she plays and is dull to watch. The only role I've ever liked her in was Margot in The Royal Tennanbaums and that was because she was playing a character who was supposed to sap the life out of everyone around her. She doesn't seem to be acting much anymore, thank goodness, but please don't let her stage a comeback!

Olivia Wilde - because she can't act. It irks me that she is being paid truckloads of money and isn't even giving a performance that would past muster in a high-school play. Her forte is posing nude in men's magazines and showing up on the red carpet. These days there's plenty of opportunities for celebrities like her in reality television where believable acting is not required.

All you women must be having your periods. This article was written by a female, and surprise, surprise, it's mainly females on the list. Eliza Dushku is excellent, and Fox blows. There's nothing wrong with Melissa George either bitches. Ashton Kutcher is a wannabe poser, and can't act to save his life. So please go back to your soap opera's, eat your bon bons, and shut the hell up.

It's pretty amusing that the only vitriolic comments on this (totally subjective, not at all important list) come from blokes whose main defence is that we are all fat housewives that are just jealous!!!!111 (oh the humanity!).
Seriously, get a grip, Truth and Andy. TWP has about as much chance of ruining an actors career as a bad review in one newspaper. People have opinions - for goodness sake try and develop a sense of humour.
This did make me laugh though:
"You people that are on here bashing actors have no clue what it takes to actually achieve something in life."
Yes, I'm sure that the many people on here who are in the medical, teaching, engineering etc profession are literally weeping that alas we cannot contribute to the welfare of humanity by spending our lives playing let's pretend.
Actors/the entertainment industry has its place and it's fun, but come on it's hardly saving people's lives.

I don't think it's fair to say all of these actors should be banned, as much as they should shift away from the roles they have become accustomed to. Kelsey Grammar should pick up his Sideshow Bob talents and play dark and serious, maybe as a conniving cutthroat lawyer on The Good Wife or The Deep End. Patricia Heaton should ditch comedy and try out a smart, aggressive role on a police procedural. Eliza Dushku could easily make a career as a character actor playing psychopaths. Charlie Sheen needs a dramatic role with some pathos connected directly to his personal weaknesses - maybe as a drunk, lecherous burned-out cop on Southland. Even Melissa George could redeem herself by playing and out-and-out camp bitch on a show like Melrose Place.

Melissa George was pretty good in Alias. I agree totally with Trachtenberg. GOD! She was sooooo annoying in Buffy. Not because she was supposed to act as an annoying teenager, but she WAS annoying.

I agree with Kate. Faith is still one of my all time favourite characters. With Dollhouse we were meant to believe she was a different character yet besides wardrobe they were all kinda the same. I was actually starting to enjoy Dollhouse towards the end probably because it was less 'Doll of the Week' and more Eliza playing bad ass Echo.

how could David Car-usamely-awful-uso be forgotten? Following every Miami CSI my family "acts" out his scenes. One liners, sometimes sans sunglasses, tho a lovely prop they do make. It is especially helpful not to laugh out loud during our retakes but-hey-at least the audience can tell we are alive. I fear that unless CSI Las Vegas-(the only one that on occasion actually functions as a scientific lab rather than an extension of the Police Department/Detective Squad)-can lure William Peterson back, THE ENTIRE ENTERPRISE OF CSI IS DOOMED. Two weak spinoffs cannot revive the 3 shows without him. And look out Criminal Intent without D'Onofri-that shows demise looms too.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
