Winter Olympics 2010: What's Wrong With the TV Coverage

I know that there have been a lot of complaints all over the blogosphere about the tape delay (especially for the West Coasters) used for the Olympics, and even though I don't necessarily agree with the logic used to defend it, it seems futile to keep beating that dead horse. They aren't going to change it, so I just deal with it by avoiding the local news, Twitter updates or Internet sport sites until late at night. However, I do have some other issues with the telecasts, particularly during primetime, that are really starting to take some of the joy out of the Winter Games for me.

Limited or Non-Existent Coverage of Many Sports
You know what some of the most awesome sporting events I've seen so far have been? Women's aerials qualifying rounds, the biathlon and the exhausting cross-country events. Those aerial rounds were filled with jaw-dropping twists and accidents, which would surely thrill a bloodthirsty American audience, while the biathlon had guns (always a crowd-pleaser). And I've never seen people as out-of-breath as the cross-country skiers who practically collapsed at the end of their runs -- not even on The Biggest Loser. And then there's the oddly fascinating sport of curling. Although I can understand why a several-hours-long curling match (along with all of the early rounds of hockey) might be relegated to MSNBC or USA during the day, at the very least NBC could show the highlights of all of these during the evening, so those of us who have jobs and overloaded DVRS can at least see the events in all their glory on those expensive televisions we got suckered into buying.

Go Team USA!
I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but it seems like we see every American athlete's Olympic attempt, even if that athlete is the worst in his/her event, while athletes from other countries are really only shown if they are in medal contention. For example, I've watched curling just about every day it's been on and the only times that I've seen teams other than the U.S. men or women is when they've been playing against the U.S. or when the broadcasters needed to fill 15 minutes after a match ended earlier than expected. Maybe I'm missing secret coverage somewhere because I don't have the proper kind of cell phone? And the only reason that we even got to see a bit of hockey Sunday night was because the American team beat Canada in a big upset. If Canada had won, I bet that news barely would have merited a blip on Bob Costas' radar.

Not Enough Full-Televised Events
I do understand editing, and the fact that the typical American viewer might not want to watch every single ski contender in the preliminary rounds of the Super G, or each and every attempt at the skeleton by all of the women insane enough to try it, but there are those of us who would watch it all if it were televised somewhere. I specifically cleared out my DVR ahead of time to make room to record all the Olympic programs... only to discover that not everything can be found even on smaller cable channels. In this day and age, I guess they expect people to watch online, but I stare at a computer all day every day and would love to have the old-fashioned alternative of sitting in front of the TV and showing my kid some crazy fun sports. Why isn't there a station devoted to showing events in their entirety (even if they weren't actually live)? It seems like a no-brainer. I'm sure I'm not alone in craving 24-hour Olympic coverage. Or am I?

Too Much Info About Some Athletes, Not Enough About Others
If I had to recite the entire biography of Lindsey Vonn, I could. But if you ask me about two-time silver medalist Julia Mancuso, all I can tell you is that she's attractive and likes to wear a tiara when she wins. Similarly, I can tell you all about snowboarder Hannah Teter and her charity work and love of maple syrup, or all about Australia's gold medal winner Torah Bright and how she told her parents to skip the Olympics and just come to her wedding but they surprised her and came anyway. But all I can tell you about bronze medalist Kelly Clark is that she likes to sing (badly) before she heads into the halfpipe. Don't even get me started on how the networks are so obsessed with Apolo Ohno that they are analyzing why he yawns. And speaking of which...

Boundaries, They Don't Have Them
In this day and age of Twitter and TMZ, there's an all-access pass to every detail of every celebrity's life, but I'm not sure that should be used as a template for NBC's Olympics coverage. While I would seriously appreciate more of the actual sports being shown, I don't necessarily need to see poor Kelly Clark warbling like a bad American Idol contestant, or for the cameras to capture private (and sometimes profanity-filled) moments between a coach and a player (and no, I don't think it is the fault of Shaun White's coach that he didn't censor himself because there were cameras around). It's one thing to do an interview with someone before or after an event, but it is another thing entirely to trail after them all day (even if they are a public person) to try to get their personal kiss-and-cry moments. That's what should be edited out, not the actual sporting events.

Non-Sport Coverage in Primetime
Look, I kind of love oddball Mary Carillo and her little segments and often stay up until the wee hours of the morning to watch her interviews with the athletes. But seeing her do a profile of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for ten minutes or more, or chat with Bob Costas about really nothing at all, isn't what I tune into the Olympics for. While I did kinda enjoy learning more about the Mounties (who wouldn't?), I'd rather have had that valuable airtime spent on one of the aforementioned neglected sports. Run Mary's segment that will air after the 11 PM news or during the highly Olympics-centric Today show instead.

All of this is very true, epecially about Vonn, White, and Ohno. We have 212 athletes at these games, manyof which have competed and/or medaled for the first time. Let's see mroe of them!

And I am going to add...

Lack of Medal Ceremonies
I love seeing the winners on the podiums regardless of whether or not it's the US who won. Why can't they set aside some time throughout the tape delay to show various podiums and national anthems? For that matter, why aren't they showing a podium every time the US wins a medal? Did we even get to see Johnny Spillane (who won the first ever Olympic medal for the US in the Nordic Combine)? What about Apolo Ohno and JR Celski when they got silver and bronze? Yes, we would have had to listen to the Korean anthem...but is that a bad thing? The true joy of the Olympics is seeing all of the sports I love...and getting to see ALL of the countries celebrate their triumphs. I got to see online one ceremony where the gold medalist was just balling and ready to burst with joy...and it made me so happy for him! More medal ceremonies, NBC!

I don't know if you are able to get any Canadian channels where you are. But if so, we have 24 hour a day coverage on three channels, CTV, TSN, and Sportsnet. It sounds like NBC has really dropped the ball on this.

"Amen" to all of the above.

They have a stable worth of channels besides NBC itself and yet practically none of them are showing stuff. I used to LOVE watching early-round Wimbledon matches on HBO when I was younger and had more free time. I understand that they can't show everything primetime and found it awesome that die-hards could still catch the whole sporting event somewhere. But if you're an uberfan of, for exaple, short-track, you won't see the early rounds unless Apolo is in them. And even then, maybe not.

The fact that the biggest hockey game of pool play was not in HD so they could show freakin' ice dancing was ridiculous. HD was made for U.S. v. Canada in hockey.

Wow, that really sucks for you guys. There hasn't been one second of competition that hasn't been available to watch live here in Canada -- even sports where we had no business sending someone to compete -- the entire event -- sometimes 60+ competitors. We have somewhere around 6 channels showing events at any given time (all but one in glorious HD -- why no HD OLN??). I've been able to turn on one channel, watch the Canadian athlete fail (I'm looking at you, Men's speedskating team) and then flip the channel to see another one fail. This is CTV's first time showing the games and I can easily say that they've been the best, most consistant part of the Olympics (for Canada). I actually shuddered last weekend when, while watching a Canadian get silver & an American win gold in snowboard cross, checked to see that NBC was showing Entertainment Tonight. For shame.

I would just like to remind you of the Triple Cast, the 3 24-hour pay-per-view channels NBC set up for the 1992 Summer Games. To this day, my family is convinced that we are the only people who purchased it (and it was awesome).

I don't know about other's cable set-ups (I have Cablevision), but I was able to see the hockey game in HD on MSNBC and all the curling has been in HD. A lot of the team sports are being shown in the mornings on Universal HD. There is also a channel (it's 674 on my box) that has 5 little picture in picture boxes showing what's on all the NBC channels to find the Olympic coverage. It's not perfect, but it's something.

Also, last night's ice dancing was pure comedy gold. I used the picture in picture to watch the hockey game live but still keep an eye on the skating.

Try the Canadian coverage (CTV) they show almost every sport, and if it's not on TV, it's on their website ctv.com (which is soooo much easier to navigate than nbc.com)

Also, they're quite willing to show and talk about every athlete in an event - and usually show the entire event - as well as a bit more indepth stuff on the Canadians obviously.

I adore the Olympics, and would love to see much, much more. I have been staying up way past my bedtime to watch curling on MSNBC. It is weirdly fascinating.
I would love to see more events period, and of those we do see - more qualifying rounds. More stories on non USA-athletes would be great. Or even, more non-famous USA athletes (hello, Bobsled team!).

I'm tired of the dramatic triumph over tragedy stories. Especially when they break away from the event in progress. I.E during pairs figure skating, cutting away to tell us a story about the chinese coach. They should've capitalized on the internet for people that want to watch any part of an event.

You all forget than NBC is a profit driven television network. They would need to sell much more advertising to warrant giving unlimited access. And despite being a melting pot, this is the US so given limited airtime they will show US athletes along with the favorites from other countries.

The Triplecast was not a success for NBC's standards, which is why it has not returned since. As for Canada having unlimited free access spread across multiple channels, they are the host country and it would be stupid not to (even the SLC games had multiple channels).

I kind of find it hilarious that NBC is barely showing prime Olympic coverage, when up here in Canada we have probably 6 channels (CTV, Sportsnet and TSN, and then all three again in awesome HD) I'm actually really surprised that you guys are getting so little coverage of the actual events, because it seems as though anytime I turn on the Olympics (which seems to be all the time) there's an American in the medal event. Disappointing, yes. But now it's just sort of laughable since I've heard the American perspective on the coverage.

The only drawback to the 24 hour Canadian channels is seeing the same Olympic!Go Canada! commercials... They're cute, but after seeing it for the 5th time in 30 minutes... It's annoying.

Last night on Twitter, among the collective WTF? tweets during ice dancing, I kept seeing the hashtag #NBCfail regarding the coverage (or lack there of) of the USA v. Canada hockey game. Apparently the reasoning was the network wanted to appeal more to women or something. Frankly, I think the NFL is behind all of it! I don't know how, but they are.

Just a comment for all you Canadian commenters: Canada's doing a great job on the games. I haven't heard the usual complaining about hardships getting to the events, finding food and water, etc. The games seem to be well-organized (aside from a few technical glitches, which are to be expected) and well-run. I agree, NBC's coverage has been awful. I realized last night that I don't even get MSNBC, but NBC has made it just about impossible to even watch the live stream on-line. Would it kill them to just let everyone in the US have the opportunity to stream the hockey game live? Throw in some commercials or charge me a one-time fee, I don't even care. The nonsense about logging in with your cable account name and password is ridiculous.

The medal ceremonies are also getting short changed. I couldn't believe they didn't show Ohno and Celski getting their medals (or if they did, I missed it among the 8 millionth discussion of Lindsay Vonn's muscle bruise).

Canada's got massive coverage, and while there are streaming live feeds online from CTV, most of them aren't internationally licensed, just like streaming feeds from the US aren't available outside the US. Broadcast rights and stuff.

The live results page at the Vancouver2010 site works internationally and is fantastic for keeping track of events at work. The Facebook feed chatter gets viperous. It's great.

I love the CTV coverage though. I never would have known something as kickass as snowboard-cross existed without it.

I do like the way entire matches are on MSNBC and CNBC at least. I watched the USA v Canada match on MSNBC in HD, and I think CNBC has been mostly curling (not all of them US matches either). But it's infuriating here on the west coast to have the skating and other events chopped up into little bits on delay. Even if they don't want to start early, we could at least join the east coast live feed already in progress and then go back to the stuff on tape.

I thought the whole point of NBC utilizing msnbc and usa were to give us more choices, but instead we have to flip back and forth during the day. I especially like to see the other competitors and hear their national anthems when they win.
They spent a lot of time telling us stories about these competitors in the opening ceremonies, especially the small one-athlete delegations, I wish that they would update us about those athletes, even if they came in 27th in their events!

Australia has two separate providers going with two completely different broadcasts Channel 9 (free to air) has 3-5 hours live during our daytime, and highlights from about 9pm to midnight. And are also suffering from the 'popular sports and Australians only' syndrome. Foxtel (pay-tv), however, has a package available that was an extra charge on top of the monthly fees, but has four 24/7 channels duplicated in SD, HD and online access. With jsut about every event in full, Aussie competitor or not. They've also made the (good) decision to use the Canadian commentary feed for sports that we don't really play, so we get actual experts instead of pretend ones.

I was watching the men's moguls online last week and twittered the results, and one of my USA friends replied that I had results and she was only halfway through the field on NBC.

I totally agree NBC has been horrible these Olympics. One issue I have is the total lack of technical explainations. They are devoting hours of coverage to figure skating, but never described the difference between a triple toe loop and a triple axel. They also discussed Vonn using men's skis and how much of an advantage they gave her, but didn't have a graphic or cogent discussion of WHY until she skiied in the super-combined.

P.S.
I had a friend who worked in the call center that took orders for the Triplecast. They got excited anytime someone called in, even if they didn't take the call. IIRC daily orders were 0-5.

I'm not sure what this point is here. From what I understand, Canada always has far more extensive coverage than the U.S., whether they are the host or not. As for Salt Lake City, I don't remember any 24/7 coverage in the U.S. So, point not made.

Personally, I'm glad they don't show so many medal ceremonies. I find them tiresome. Same thing over and over. I watch the Olympics for competition, and I'd much rather see more of that. Besides, they're showing quite a few medal ceremonies during the night show that runs just before they re-air the primetime coverage. And I skip that coverage, for precisely that reason.

As Erik said, Canadian channels have had excellent coverage of all of the events, and not just our Canadian athletes – it has been truly outstanding and very addictive!

I can't believe they didn't air the US/Canada hockey game on NBC - even though we lost it was exciting to watch and would have been exciting for those hockey fans in the US to see their team win! Come on NBC! The US is ahead in the medal race and your viewers aren't even getting to see it happen live in most cases!

Yes, yes, yes, exactly! Ice dancing has never really been a highlight in previous games. Dancing with the Stars started in 2005 (the British version started about a year before) but really took off in the fall of 2006 when it got regular slating and started its two season a year run. And in 2006, Britain started Dancing on Ice which has been successful there, though the American version bombed. So yes, it's completely changed the amount of coverage and timing and focus. Well, I don't know that that's why, but I know it's changed, and I know when Dancing with the Stars became a cultural phenomenon and I know that I hear ads for Olympic coverage (particularly Ice Dancing) using Dancing with the Stars as a tie in. So I'm pretty sure that it's a safe bet.

In re NBC being an arse about covering the games (way less coverage then the last games, at least by half), does anyone remember when ABC covered the games and miss it? Sure, they did the dramatic intimate portrayals too, but not the same ones over and over, and at least in my opinion, coverage just dropped in quality when NBC got the contract.

But another factor playing into Ice Dancing that I forgot to mention is that North America has never really even been in contention for, well, forever, and it's not usually as dramatic as the other ice skating sports which got preferential coverage. There's no quad or not to quad, not much falling. So the sport just didn't get the same coverage and excitement. Someone in 6th or 8th couldn't really see winning a medal the way you could in the other ice skating sports where people drop like flies.

But after the last games, America got on the podium for the first time in forever and in the final dance I think there were five drops or falls by the top pairs--which is kinda how Belvin and Augusto got on the podium. And since then America has broken out in the sport, there are multiple rivalries including an American/Canadian rivalry and the chance that for the first time in forever that Russia will be completely shut out of the medals, etc...basically the sport got more dramatic in general and the storyline got really dramatic and people will tune into a sport they care nothing about if it has a good storyline. So, it's not just Dancing with the Stars affecting people's mindsets. It would have gotten more attention regardless.

Rachel, regarding ads on the NBC online stream of the hockey game, there were ads. Somebody over at the Puck Daddy blog was streaming the game there and they cut to commercial breaks in the middle of play, with no regard for what was happening on the ice.

I'm a (female) hockey fan, and I understand the rationale for not airing hockey on the flagship network, even if it disappoints me. However, I was greatly discouraged to see that essentially every primetime men's game was shifted between USA Network, MSNBC and CNBC, sometimes with the result that a whole period would pass with no U.S. TV coverage.

I'm also another Michigander who really, really misses CBC coverage. I'd even tolerate some Don Cherry-brand xenophobia over this.

We have the BBC red button thing going on over here in Britain- links you to different sports, gives you results schedules etc. The problem is the time difference- most stuff is on during the night- but that can't really be helped. As for 'Go team GB'....hmmm...not so much. I mean, there is support for our own and man, have they showed Amy Williams winning her gold over and over but our commentators etc. seem very excited by everyone. Mind you, we're not exactly up there in the medals table when it comes to the winter olympics but still, they always seem to get excited about other countries athletes regardless of the sporting event.

It's bad enough the Summer games are all Phelps, what is the point of interviewing him for being a spectator at the Winter games? If you must do these boring Costas interviews at least keep them to people actually competing in these games.

Word to all! YES I would watch 24-7 Olympics. YES, I want more medals ceremonies. They showed the Canadian who won for Skeleton, and since they had not shown skeleton I had no clue why I should care. Show me me the medal ceremonies that make everyone weep, or jump for joy. SHOW ME IT ALL. And also, commentators, if it's a sport where the action happens in less than 5 minutes bursts- SHUT UP during those 5 minutes. In 2002 I was in Hong Kong during the start of SLC. Caught ski jumping on NHK from Japan- they show it all with no comments during the jumps, but do comment with arrows on the screen and tuff on the replay. It was great- they also showed EVERYONE. At leats aim to show the top 10-15 in each sport if they take turns. Save the interviews and fluff stuff for the internet- if they had an add on interview right now for exmaple with Aksel Svindal- I'd go find it. Also, the NBC Olympics site currently sucks- it's hard to navigate and find schedules. And the Cable provider requirement is ridiculous.

As much as I love Apolo, I'm dead tired of seeing personal stories about him. They showed an Indian luger for about five seconds on the track and then he disappeared forever. What about him? I want to see his story! I want to see the story of the female Iranian skier! No luck.

I agree with all of this. I wonder how much of it is to do with the fact that NBC expected to lose money on these Games, so they're moving everything around so as to keep as many sponsors as possible or something.

Anyway, I was so pissed that I missed the US/Canada hockey game. It's my own fault, because I passed right by it on my cable guide without looking to see what was showing. I figured if it was on MSNBC it would be more lame curling (and by the way, why the hell are they showing so much damn curling? Seriously?) They should have shown that game on NBC, but no, they chose to show ice dancing, the second lamest event of the Games. Second only, of course, to curling.

Philistine! Curling is the best event in the Olympics, winter or summer.

My cable has Golf Channel and NFL Network, where's my Curling Channel?

Every Olympics I wonder why we are so surprised when NBC coverage is lousy. It's lousy every Olympics. In Canada, granted it spotlights Canadian athletes, but whether CBC or CTV does the Games, you get wall-to-wall, everything but the Zamboni coverage. (Sometimes we cover the Zamboni, too.) Heck -- this Olympics we have three separate TV stations with coverage from 9 am to past midnight, every day.

*shrug* Maybe, zifmia, but it looks to me as if they might as well have bocce ball as an Olympic event.

Yes, thank you. The lack of medal ceremonies makes me angry! It doesn't even feel like the Olympics without it.

Agreed. Lindsey Vonn may be a great person, but I found myself muttering about her "damn muscle," and developing a real dislike for here. Enough already!

Amen to everything including cdredhead's comment about the lack of medal ceremonies. I've liked the olympics more than I can remember in recent years. I remember that the summer olympics before Beijing had just about 24 hours coverage. Hell even SciFi (sorry SyFy) had some events broadcast. I seem to remember there being more coverage for the last winter olympics too.

Unfortunately I'm sadly limited to NBC Network's coverage because I don't have cable or satelite like my parents do. And I know there are less events and atheletes in the winter. Quite frankly two hours during the day (that isn't even pre-empting Dr. Phil at 5 or Rachel Ray at 2) and spotty prime time coverage broken up by stories about atheletes that we saw on the nightly news days before, and the today show earlier that day, is not enough. And why on earth do we need to hear from Michael Phelps and his experience as a SPECTATOR? Michael Phelps?!? WTF?!? Don't get me wrong he's a fine athelete, but seriously?!? Why do we need an interview with him during the WINTER olympics, especially commenting about being a spectator and about the close race he had. It was close, he won, he got the medal, it was TWO YEARS AGO! Let's move on.

Finally I too have a beef with the lack of the hockey game on network?!? I'm sure there are enough hockey fans in this country that they would have liked to have seen the game, even if tape delayed. Not knocking ice dancing but given the choice between the two I would have rather seen the hockey game on network in prime time. USA v. Canada, seems like a pretty good draw.

Anyway NBC gets a D- for their coverage. I don't know how much longer NBC has the olympics, but if their coverage continues like this for the next ones, it'd be nice for another network to get a shot.

That's what I thought Universal HD would be used for, but the coverage there has been sparingly at best. My most frustrating moment was watching the US/Nor men's curling match online. It was the TV broadcast, which meant missing the opening throws for almost every end, and the video cut off the end because the match went to an extra end.

I can live with the tape delay on primetime, but the weekends and the afternoon should be live. It's the only reason I'm dreading the U.S. men getting to the gold medal hockey game; it really will be a throwback to 1980: tape delay!

The ice dancing coverage wasn't even that great, anyway. They didn't show most of the competitors, such as the Japanese teams (which surprised me because I thought for sure they'd show at least that american-born one) and they didn't show most of them until after 10 pm, in order to show tape-delayed skiing. And of course, three different time-wasting segments. I often wonder why NBC spent so much to acquire the rights to the Olympic Games since they seem to believe that nobody actually wants to *see* the Olympic Games.

The lack of medal ceremonies and blatantly nationalistic coverage (to the point of being embarassing) aren't limited to the US. In Australia the only free-to-air coverage of the games is on Channel 9, which is a 5-hour live program from 9am until 2pm, then a "highlights" package at 9:30pm, which generally only features Australians in the qualifying rounds. I think three nights of the "highlights" package were dedicated to Torah Bright, and hers is the only medal presentation that has been shown in Australia. About the only events that don't feature Aussies that have been shown are the figure skating events, and that was only so the nasty host of the highlights show could make fun of Johnny Weir.

Sadly, nothing has changed for the better since Dave Barry made fun of the 1996 Olympics coverage: http://www.davebarry.com/gg/olympicskerristrug.htm
The Wall Street Journal analyzed Friday's primetime coverage by NBC. Of the 3.5 hours, just 53 minutes showed actual athletic competition, with 56 being taken by commercials. Costas got 17 minutes of facetime, along with all the other feature-pap. So wrong.

OMG- I'm with you on the no limits thing. I watched the camera man follow Lindsey Vonn to the Port-a-potty the other night. They only went to a different camera once she had closed the door! Really? That was the most exciting thing happening in Vancouver at that moment? How do these athletes stay focused with television idiots behind them all day long?

During the 2008 Summer Olympics we watched all kinds of odd sports (air pistol! fencing! equestrian dressage!) on the Chinese and Korean NBCs which don't seem to be carrying ANY Olympics coverage for the Winter Games. So disappointing, although I've been loving all the curling! It hardly seems worth it for NBC to blow this huge amount to buy the rights to cover an event, and then to not bother actually covering it.

Yes, I do remember when ABC had the contract and overall they did a wonderful job.

When Bob Costas was interviewing Evan Lyseczek he kept reading quotes from the bitter Russians saying that it was to "help" Evan (we all know it was to provoke a response from Evan). I just shook my head and thought that Jim McKay would NEVER have done something that tacky and classless.

I miss Jim. I can only hope another network gets the Olympics in the future because NBC and Bob Costas all suck.

@Jill

The reason that they showed so much snowcross qualifying is that the alpine events that day were cancelled. NBC was looking for filler.

As for the ice dance versus hockey debate, ice dance was one of the few ratings bright spots for NBC during the Torino Olympics. Now, a lot of that had to do with Belbin and Agosto trying to become the first US team to medal in 30 years), but it is understandable that, with two US teams in medal contention, NBC would air ice dance on the main network. What NBC should have done with hockey was put it on CNBC -- in HD -- and then repeat the game overnight for viewers without cable. I think a lot of the viewer complaints would have been avoided if the game was in HD.
