Eureka: Everything Changes in the Season Premiere, Say Jack and Allison

Fans of the Syfy show Eureka will have to wait until July to see for themselves, but we talked to the show's two stars at the Syfy Upfront event and found out that the entire town of Eureka will be "changed" when Season 4 debuts. Colin Ferguson ("Sheriff Jack Carter") and Salli Richardson-Whitfield ("Dr. Allison Blake") talked about a major paradigm shift that takes place in the first episode, around the same time new cast member James Callis (Battlestar Galactica's Gaius Baltar) comes to town. Plus, we learn the fates of Zoe and Tess, and we hear how Allison is going to mix it up! If only there were a word that expressed our feeling of discovery...

So what does James Callis bring to the show?
Colin Ferguson: [Mock-derisively.] Nothing. He's never brought anything to everything he's done. [Both laugh.]
Salli Richardson-Whitfield: Sexiness and trouble.

He's gonna come between you two, right?
Ferguson: He can try. You can bring anyone in if they want to try. No, it's great. It gives us somebody else to work off of.
Richardson-Whitfield: He's not only a wonderful actor, he's actually sexy and interesting.
Ferguson: And from the table reads, he's funny, which you don't get to see on Galactica.
Richardson-Whitfield: He's very funny. But not as funny as you.
Ferguson: Well, no one is, really.
Richardson-Whitfield: I just want to be clear.
Ferguson: [Laughs.] Thanks, Sal.

What kind of baggage does his character come with?
Ferguson: Oh, wow. If we could tell you that...? A lot.
Richardson-Whitfield: He definitely comes in with his own secrets. Is he gonna be a good guy? Is he a bad guy? You don't know. It's like, "Where is he coming from?"
Ferguson: Something happens at the beginning of the season which is... we maintain the characters, we maintain the relationships, but everything shifts. And it's one of those things where you watch the episode, you assume at the end of the episode, like, "Oh, it's gonna reverse and we're gonna--" It doesn't! So that's his baggage.
Richardson-Whitfield: But not in a stupid way, in a way that you go, "This is great."
Ferguson: Like, "Are you kidding? You're gonna--? Okay!" It's great, it's cool! It's evolving, I'll give 'em that.

Is it a change for the better or the worse?
Ferguson: Oh, it just goes different. It goes lateral. Everything changes, it's not necessarily for the better or for the worse. But everything changes, and I wish I could give you more than that, but they told us not to say anything.
Richardson-Whitfield: It really would ruin it. It's a big surprise.

Some of the fans are sad that Jack's daughter Zoe is gone.
Richardson-Whitfield: No, no, she's still there. We got her back.
Ferguson: We dogged her, we browbeat her, she was doing other things, but she's coming back now. I was concerned, too. I love Jordan [Hinson], I love having her around. She couldn't wait to come back, in the best way.

What about Jamie Ray Newman's character, Tess Fontana?
Richardson-Whitfield: [Quickly.] I got rid of her! [Laughs.]
Ferguson: Yup! We launched an Internet campaign to crush that show, and we're happy to say it died. [Note: Newman left to do The Witches of Eastwick, which was cancelled.]
Richardson-Whitfield: But she'll be back for a couple of episodes.
Ferguson: Yeah, whatever, Callis! Take Jamie Ray! That's history, right there.
Richardson-Whitfield: I'll beat her down
Ferguson: I know you will.

You both have these people you hate!
Ferguson: Yeah, it's like life! No, it's fun. There's a lot of dynamics going around, and I suppose we can say Sal's brought out of Global, so we're running around together now.
Richardson-Whitfield: We get to do a little more of what we used to do.
Ferguson: Which is fun.
Richardson-Whitfield: It's good to get out of those power suits.
