Nip/Tuck Finally Goes Out... With a Whimper After seven insane seasons Nip/Tuck ended far past its prime last night (though, admittedly, I've never stopped loving the show as a guilty pleasure), and the few people still watching expected a mind-blowing finale. Well, they didn't get that, but though it was an anti-climactic and surprisingly emotionless series finale, maybe that's what it needed to be.

This series always seemed like it was driving toward Sean leaving a life of boob jobs and facelifts for a higher calling, and Christian becoming a mature adult, but it usually pulled back whenever it neared that goal. That's often been a point of criticism for a lot of viewers, but I've always thought it was because those two don't deserve better, and that we were never really supposed to root for either of them in the first place, empty charlatans that they were. And I think the finale's ending supported that: Christian fell right back into his self-medicating, womanizing routine, while Sean walked away, feeling great about all the important work he's sure to be doing for those Romanian orphans soon. Except the thing about Sean is, you know he's going to be right back by Christian's side in about two weeks and that he'll continue this cycle over and over again until they're both dead from an overdose of extreme self-righteousness someday. These two will never change because Nip/Tuck doesn't believe people are capable of it. So the ending may not have melted my face off, but at least it was consistent with the rest of the series.

Speaking of people who never change, I am utterly inconsolable about Matt surviving the finale, though I suppose accepting a life as Ava's lapdog is just as bad. It's a pity that little Jenna's going to be raised by the only two psychopaths on the planet worse than Kimber and Christian. What a lovely little truck-stop hooker she'll be when she grows up (if Matt doesn't sell her for crack before her fifth birthday, of course).

And Julia? I don't care about Julia. Hope she has fun bringing her dysfunction to some British man with a castle until he grows tired of her. And it was nice that Liz finally got her name on the door, of course, but it was hard to be excited for her knowing that Sean and Christian will never let that woman be happy.

That said, I'll miss the show. I don't believe it stopped being a criticism of the American obsession with physical perfection over personal or intellectual growth entirely after the first season like so many claim, and though it did try too shamelessly to shock its audience, I've never felt that's all it was about. At the very least, it's going to be difficult to find a scripted show as depravedly fun as this was, though I'm certainly going to try.
