Nurse Jackie Season 2 is upon us, and to promote the new episodes Showtime was lovely enough to invite my tape recorder and I to their premiere party/hospital charity event to interview the cast and watch some real-life nurses compete against each other in some Double Dare-esque challenges to raise money for cancer research and the like (you had to be there). Read on for some spoilers and insights into the new season from Edie Falco, Peter Facinelli, Dominic Fumusa (Jackie's husband Kevin) and Stephen Wallem (Thor!).
First up is Edie Falco and Dominic Fumusa:
So what can we expect from Season 2?
Edie Falco: More of the same, I'll just say. It's a chaotic life, and a complicated woman, a multi-dimensional character. It's going to lead to a lot of chaos, I think.
I read some official synopses that said Kevin and Eddie remain friends throughout the second season. So... he didn't tell Kevin about his affair with Jackie?
Dominic Fumusa: No. He keeps coming to my bar, and we keep hanging out, and we become good friends.
Jackie probably doesn't care much for that.
EF: [Delightful sarcasm.] Mayyybeeee.
Do you think Kevin would ever leave Jackie if he found out about the drugs and infidelity?
DF: I don't know! I don't think it would be his immediate reaction to walk away from her. He'd try to figure it out, and where it goes from there, you know, you don't know. It's going to be painful, obviously, when all of this is out there. And I think that's going to be really exciting to play as an actor, and also as an audience member. We don't quite get there in Season 2, but obviously we know what this is leading up to.
Where is Jackie going to get her drugs now that Eddie's out of her life and the Pill-O-Matic won't work?
EF: Where there's a will, there's a way. Ask any addict. She finds a way.
It's so sad that Mo-Mo's not coming back. He was a great character.
EF: It is sad, he's a wonderful guy.
Who is Jackie going to confide in when Eleanor's not around now?
EF: Thor becomes more of a compadre.
I love Thor!
EF: Yeah, I do too.
Does she grow closer to Zoey at all?
EF: She does, especially as Zoey gets a little more confident. She actually becomes appreciative of what she does.
Will Steve Buscemi be coming back to direct anything?
EF: Nah, he's busy with Boardwalk Empire.
DF: But we would love to, he's fantastic.
Any future guest stars you can tell me about?
EF: Harvey Fierstein! He plays a relative of a patient.
DF: And the woman who was Mrs. Cunningham.
EF: Oh my god, that's right! Marion Ross.
DF: She's great, and totally different part for her. Oh, and Julia Ormond comes on!
Is Victor Garber coming back?
EF: No, he's not there this year.
Sad for Akalitus!
EF: I know, so sad!
Switching to Peter Facinelli...
What's going on in Season 2 for Coop?
Peter Facinelli: Coop's going on an emotional rollercoaster ride. His and Jackie's friction continues.
He's not over his Jackie love?
PF: You know, he's kind of like the kid in the third grade who has a crush on a girl and it's not reciprocated, so he does everything he can to pull the pigtails and just get reactions from her. And he starts Twittering, which bugs the crap out of her, and he becomes the face of All Saints. They do a campaign to try and get better clientele in the hospital and they put his face on the posters, and everywhere Nurse Jackie goes, she's got my face peering at her.
I bet his ego just explodes.
PF: His ego goes off the charts.
Will we see more of your moms this season?
PF: No, I think there are references to them, but we don't have them this season.
Are you missing Mo-Mo?
PF: Yeah, I always miss Mo-Mo. I think he's a fine actor, and I'm sad that he's not on the show. But I think this season is really strong, and I'm excited. We had a really fun time working this season, and I hope it translates.
Does Coop make any friends at all this season? Eddie was kind of his only cohort last year, and that was by brute force.
PF: Coop thinks everybody's his friend, that's the problem. He's still got Eddie, who he thinks is his best friend, though not by Eddie's choice. If it was Eddie's choice he wouldn't be friends with Coop, but Coop's kinda this puppy dog in a room full of people who hate dogs. He's always jumping up on your lap and annoying you, but you can't help but love him.
It's off-topic, but I have to ask: Is your wife rooting for anybody on Dancing With the Stars this season?
PF: Of course! Shannen Doherty!
Are you just making that up right now?
PF: No! She's really rooting for Shannen! I know they've actually spoken, and Jennie was like 'I support you, and it's a really courageous thing you're doing, and I'm thrilled for you,' so she's very excited for Shannen.
And, finally, the enchanting Thor:
No joke, you are like my favorite character.
Stephen Wallem: I love you! And I love your site, Jacob is like the greatest thing ever.
I agree! So what's goin' on with Thor these days?
SW: I think last season Thor was a lot more intimidated by Jackie, and this year, I think because of some personal revelations that Thor shares with Jackie and nobody else, it brings the two of them together. That's the biggest leap that he's taking. Jackie is one of those people that Thor digs so much, and always wanted to be a closer friend to but didn't know how to go about it, and in a roundabout way they become better friends. She lent a big ol' ear during some personal times.
Does Thor get closer to Zoey? Your scenes together last season were hysterical.
SW: Absolutely.
I think he loves that little freak.
SW: How could you not?! And she's a dream to work with. I have to pinch myself every day that I go to the set. Actually, in one episode in particular -- I think of it as kind of Zoey's rite of passage episode -- where it's just the two of us, and we are handling a critical situation and Zoey takes charge. It's really her springing into total maturity, and I'm so grateful I got to be apart of it.
She doesn't put anyone in a coma this time?
SW: Absolutely not, she's a complete hero.
Any favorite moments or scenes from the first season that stand out to you?
SW: I'd have to say nothing can top my very first scene for a lot of reasons, but also the taser episode, mostly because rehearsing that scene in the morning was one of the funniest two hours I've ever spent in my life. Watching Anna Deavere Smith practice all the different ways she's going to freak out in the elevator -- I was crying I was laughing so hard.
Have you had any crazy fan reactions since the show started?
SW: You know what? Everybody's been so nice. That's the truth. I'm still getting used to this, I'm so taken aback when people act excited. One thing that happened, I was visiting my partner in Kansas City, and we were at a restaurant and the waitress recognized me. She also happened to be a nurse who had taken time off, and she said, "Will you sign the bottom of the chair that you're sitting on?" Apparently in that restaurant they've had a handful of people autograph chairs. [Dissolves into giggles.] George Bush was one of the other people who signed a chair.
You and George Bush, two peas in a pod.
SW: [Delightful sarcasm.] I like to think so, yeah!

I play a recurring background character- the only male hospital administrator there; it is a BRILLIANT set to be on..a masterclass in acting! In any capacity- everyone loves being a part of something so good, so loving, so bright.
Too bad you didn't talk to Merrit Wever! I love her work, ever since 'Studio 60', and Zoey is just adorable. 'Nurse Jackie' wouldn't be the same without her.
