BLOGS
Aside from Mad Men, the TV on DVD release this week are mostly guilty pleasure-types, or, in some cases, just the guilt part.
Mad Men: Season 3
It's another Emmy-award-winning season of Mad Men! Given how this season ends, and the next one presumably begins, this is a season you're going to want to watch (or re-watch) before Season 4 rolls around, so you can remind yourself what crazy shenanigans the advertising folk we know and love had to get up to in order to get to their current place. And by "shenanigans," I mean firings, divorces, blackface, back-door dealings and lawnmower mishaps.
The Prisoner (2009 Miniseries)
Whether you understood or were totally stymied by AMC's re-imagining of the classic 1960s TV series, you'll want to watch it again, just to take in the miniseries' striking visuals, massive balls and the glory that is Ian McKellan.
Father Knows Best: Season Four
Why has nobody re-made this show? We know that a feature film version has been in the works for a while now, but a TV series could really play off the premise of the original, and have the father figure demonstrate his idiocy and lack of sound judgment from week to week. In tht meantime, those of you looking to recapture a youth spent watching Nick At Nite can start right here, and Star Trek fans who had an unnatural crush on Spock's mother can enjoy Jane Wyatt as the perfect housewife.
Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire
This medieval parody of the sword-and-sorcery genre (think Robin Hood: Men in Tights without Mel Brooks), was a co-production between Comedy Central and the BBC, and had a wealth of British and American talent, but mostly British. Little Britain's Matt Lucas played the evil dictator, Dullard from Extras was a pig-nosed ogre and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli from Lord of the Rings or Sallah from Indiana Jones, depending on your preference) played a wizard. The decision to replace narrator Michael Gambon with Chris Parnell for the U.S. airings seems a bit puzzling, but considering there were only six episodes, it's probably not that big a deal.
7th Heaven: The Complete Tenth Season
C'mon, you know you already have the first nine. Probably hidden inside a series of Bibles.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch: The Complete Sixth Season
Only one more season, and your Sabrina collection will be complete! Just in time for her new TV series, Melissa & Joey, starring her and Joey Lawrence. God, how we wish we were making that up.
The Lair: The Complete Third Season
Apparently, this is like a more gay True Blood. I know, is that even possible? Apparently, it is.
