When you think about it, all it takes is one deadly supervirus to turn most of the world's sci-fi into docudramas. Also, it could potentially eliminate the threat posed by the cast of The Hills. Oh, and if you like TV movies, Lifetime is awaiting your thank-you e-mail.
Survivors: Complete Seasons One & Two
What if a deadly virus wiped out everyone in the world but a small handful? No zombies. No mutants. Just a dramatic population reduction. They'd have to find other survivors, form a community, avoid psychopaths and zealots and eventually rebuild society. That's what happens in the BBC series Survivors, the first two seasons of which are out on DVD today, along with the complete original 1975-1977 series. Think of them as training films for a worst-case scenario. Although I guess zombies would be the worst case, wouldn't they? Second-worst, then.
The Hills: Season Five, Part Two
Will Heidi convince Spencer to have a baby? Will Spencer's gift of dogs distract her? Seriously, will they? We are legitimately concerned about the outcome of this storyline. Not just for us, but for our children.
Ghost Hunters: Season Five, Part Two
In a perfect world, this would be Ghostbusters Season Five, Part 2, the latest installment of the popular Emmy-winning TV series starring Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and a fresh-faced squad of new recruits. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world.
Murphy's Law: Season 2
This series, about an Irish detective investigating crime in London, gets its name from the well-known saying, which states, "Anything that can go wrong, probably will." It's much more famous than...
Georgia O'Keeffe
...O'Keeffe's Law, which states: "Any painting that can be interpreted as looking like human genitalia, will." This is the TV movie with Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons, but, for the record, I would totally watch a TV show called O'Keeffe's Law, as long as it's about a landscape painter who investigates murders for the New Mexico Police Dept.
To Be Fat Like Me
Supposedly, this movie -- in which a popular high school athlete, played by Kaley Cuoco, puts on a fat suit and goes to another high school to prove that popularity has nothing to do with weight and is proven WRONG -- is inspired by true events. But we cannot possibly believe something that awesome actually happened.
The Two Mr. Kissels
Another Lifetime original movie based on real crimes, in which Robin Tunney has an affair and kills her husband, then the guy's brother, John Stamos, also dies mysteriously. ...Is it still a spoiler if the whole reason this movie was made was to depict these two crimes? It seems like a Titanic situation.
Also out this week:
Tales From the Darkside: Season 3
Includes episodes written by George Romero, and one starring Brian Benben and a young Alison Sweeney.
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero - Season 2
Continue to scrub the memories of the live-action movie from your brain with these episodes.
I Love Lucy: The Movie
Edited together from three Season 1 episodes then lost for years. Not a huge loss, really.
Rita Rocks: The Complete Season One
Sadly, rocking is relative.
