TV on DVD: Tuesday, May 4, 2010

A lot of cartoons are out on DVD today, but also the cartoonishly ridiculous second season of Dirt, starring a cartoonishly evil Courteney Cox. Plus, 19th Century Canadian CSI!

Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series and Iron Man: Armored Adventures Complete Season One
If you like the Iron Man movies, you will... probably not like either of these cartoons. Granted, the first is a 1990s series that has Iron Man fighting alongside War Machine and Nick Fury against Whiplash and Justin Hammer, but it also features Tony Stark's mullet, James Rhodes saying "Homey" and the worst theme song ever written. The second one features cool new character designs, but also creepy CGI and a teenage Tony Stark, which is less like a cool movie prequel and more like a throwback to one of the worst comic book storylines in history.

Murdoch Mysteries: Season 2
Ever wonder what CSI would look like if it took place in 1895 Canada? No, of course not. That's a patently ridiculous thing to wonder. But someone wondered, and they made a TV show about a police investigator who uses highly advanced methods of detection, including fingerprints, blood testing and surveillance. Plus, he gets to match wits with Jack the Ripper, while the CSI guys just investigate people who make little dioramas.

Dirt: The Complete Second Season
God bless Cougar Town for taking Courteney Cox out of the cancelled train wreck that was this show and making us like her again.

Invader Zim: Season One & Two
Supposedly, these have been out in this latest incarnation for a month, but I felt it necessary to point out that if you have never watched Invader Zim, then you are missing out on one of the funniest cartoons ever made. Also, everything the Hot Topic employees say about you behind your back is true.

Man vs. Wild: Season 4
If this show was called Mann vs. Wilde, and it was about a human cop named Mann who was paired up with a werewolf cop named Wilde, we'd probably watch it more often. As in, at all.

Doctor Who: The Curse of Peladon, The Monster of Peladon and The Mask of Mandragora
Everyone's talking about the new 11th Doctor, but if you're just going to compare him to the 10th Doctor, he's never going to win. Try comparing him to the 3rd and 4th Doctors, in these stories from the 1970s, and see how that works out for you.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1980s, Vol. 1
In this bizarre-yet-awesome collection, A-list '80s shows like Mister T, Thundarr the Barbarian, The Flintstone Kids, Monchichis and The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley are collected along with also-rans like Dragon's Lair, Galtar and the Golden Lance, The Kwicky Koala Show and The Biskitts. Don't wait around for the complete season collections of these shows, kids -- they ain't coming.

Also out this week:
Wrestlemania 26 Shawn Michaels' retirement match, and Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon. Not bad, eh?
X-Men: Volume 5 Fourteen episodes of sub-par animation and muddled comic book storylines? Boo-urns.
Marcus Welby, M.D: Season One Ever wish you could watch a House where House wasn't such a jerk?
The Facts of Life: Season 4 Wait, have you been going through life without all the facts? Yikes.
According to Jim: The Complete Second Season According to my DVD shelf, there's no more room. Sorry, Jim.

The volume 5 series actually had decent animation. And as for the Iron Man series, the first one has 2 seasons. The first season is horrible, but the second one is pretty good, actually (Tony's mullet aside).

Man vs. Wild is awesome and Bear is the man. Just, you know, for the record.
