What I've Learned from America's Got Talent

Secret shame time. I've been watching America's Got Talent all summer. I started watching it to see how Howie Mandel fared attempting to fill David Hasselhoff's shoes. And then... I just can't explain it... I just kept tuning in. Week after week I watch people show off their various levels of talent and I hate to admit it, but I'm sort of fascinated to see what unfolds next. I'm hoping my interest will wane once they get to the Vegas semifinal rounds and people are actually talented, because frankly it is just embarrassing to admit that I watch this show... and I can't even really blame it on my job. Surprisingly though, I've actually learned a few things from this show this summer, which makes me feel slightly less ashamed. Slightly.

Did Josie and the Pussycats Have the Right Idea? Six Shows That Should Go Sci-Fi

With Boomerang airing a bunch of episodes of rock-and-roll cartoon Josie and the Pussycats every weekend in July, we started thinking about how strange it was that, after two seasons, the band suddenly got lost in space and traveled from planet to planet trying to get home. It wasn't the only show to go sci-fi, either: live-action series Happy Days, Gilligan's Island and The Three Stooges all added a sci-fi twist when they launched their animated follow-ups. Why doesn't that happen more often? Because I love cartoons and sci-fi as much as I love primetime television, here are some TV shows that we'd love to see get animated spin-offs with an outer-space theme.

Surprise of the Summer: Pretty Little Liars is Actually Great

It's an Alloy show on ABC Family that even The CW passed on, so naturally it was assumed that Pretty Little Liars would be one of summer's biggest pieces of disposable crap. Then a strange thing happened -- when the pilot finally aired, it was obvious to everyone that this was not your average ABC Family show. Pretty Little Liars is almost edgy, as outdated a term as that is, and it's far more enjoyable in an unironic way than I ever thought it would be. In fact, aside from The OCD Project, it might just be the most compelling summer show on right now. I've attempted to examine why below.

Seven Reasons Project Runway Doesn't Need to Be 90 Minutes Long

I enjoy Project Runway and intend to watch every single episode until the show eventually ends, but starting next season, I might be watching with my finger on the fast-forward button. The show is going to extend from an hour-long into ninety minutes. That's too long for regular episodes. For the premiere and the finale? Sure, make them that long. Heck, make those two hours, but weekly? Even if it is moving to 9 PM at night instead of 10 PM, that's a lot to ask. And I have a hard time believing that there are people who sent complaints that the show was too short, Heidi. No matter how much you'd like me to believe that. Here's why we're dreading it:

Louie: The Mystery of Louis CK's Failures Continues

Why is Louis CK -- one of the finest stand-up comedians in the country and a fantastic television writer to boot -- so bad at putting together television shows for himself? Louie is his second stab at it, and though it's not as bad as the embarrassing Lucky Louie, it's still bafflingly awful. How can someone so brilliant, and someone who has been funny as an actor before (his stint on Parks and Recreation, for example) make a show this bad? And on famously liberating networks, too -- Lucky Louie was on HBO and Louie is on FX, so he can't really blame an oppressive, idiot network. I can't figure it out.

Huge: Fat Camp for the Soul

Huge: Fat Camp for the Soul

Between Pretty Little Liars and now Huge, ABC Family is delivering the goods this summer. As a fat camp show connoisseur of sorts, I'm happy to say that Huge definitely did not disappoint. Because of the nature of the series, it was a relief to see that the cast was made up of actual teenagers (most of whom were born in the '90s!) with real-life weight issues -- no fat suits or stage makeup here. The writing is sensitive to body issues yet strong on the drama, resulting in an entertaining and touching premiere. And thanks to the fact that this show is scripted, it's way easier to watch than most reality series about fat camp for two reasons: First of all, scripted teenagers are way less annoying than real life teens. Second, because it's okay to be laughing at Huge's campers since they're supposed to be funny -- as much as I loved MTV's Fat Camp, I'm still full of shame for all the times I made fun of crazy Dianne, and it's nice to have that guilt lifted here.
