It's summer, and I have nothing else to talk about, which means it's time to pretend to be serious about Drop Dead Diva again. Don't get me wrong -- I actually adore the show, despite knowing how bad it is for me, it's just that... it seems silly to review a premiere like this. What am I going to say? The writing is still terrible? The acting is still bad? That it still has no right to be an hour long? That the courtroom scenes remain as ludicrous as Legally Blonde's? All those things were true last season, and they were true of last night's Season 2 premiere. You know, Drop Dead Diva just might be the most consistent show on television, when you think about it.
So it has plenty of faults (understatement!), but I am equally happy and ashamed to admit that the show still has this mysterious charm to it. I'm as baffled now as to why I enjoy watching it as I was when it premiered last year, but maybe I should stop overthinking it. I'm pretty sure a dance number dream sequence involving Judge Paula Abdul had something to do with it last night, but that doesn't account for how immensely satisfied I was with Deb mopping the floor with Jane's scumbag ex-husband, or how anxious I got at the idea of Roy from The Office breaking up with her, or how much I still want to punch Kim Kaswell in the goddamn stupid perfect face. I shouldn't have emotions about Drop Dead Diva! No one should! And yet, I do. Lifetime: they finally got me.
