TV Land's new series Hot in Cleveland relies a lot more on the Betty White phenomenon and nostalgia for three actresses who used to be on successful series than it does on actual writing or half-decent production, but that isn't to say it's without merit. People watch all kinds of shows for all kinds of flimsy reasons, whether it's "Look at the sad clowns!" (Dancing with the Stars), "Look at all the naked hot people!" (True Blood) or "Look at the well-clothed hot people!" (Gossip Girl), so really, when you think about it, "That girl used to be on Frasier!" is something too.
The show depicts three L.A. ladies (Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves) who get stuck on an overnight layover in Cleveland en route to a fabulous trip to Paris and decide they like how much fatter everyone is there so much that they'll just move there. Well, that's not exactly fair. Bertinelli decides to move there because she finds a man in a bar who's willing to have sex with someone over the age of 25. So, see? Totally better, totally makes sense.
They move into an old Victorian together and the caretaker is, of course, Betty White, who is a Midwestern spitfire who hates whores. Which is actually pretty funny and delightful, as Betty White just undeniably is, and the four of them together is oddly engaging, even if the writing really isn't there. I think this show may have some of that mysterious Drop Dead Diva mojo going on in it that somehow goes further than just having an affinity for the cast. Because it's not very funny, it's juvenile and insulting to women, really, but it's also... kind of enjoyable. I have no idea why, but it is. Maybe I'm getting stupider? That is always a possibility.

my husband and i watched it and we laughed at parts of it. if i were a woman from cleveland i would probably be offended. i was good enough to watch another episode or two. betty's character is no rose nyland but funny. definitely could have been worse. i'll watch it.
hee. the last sentence of your review was awesome.
the show... nope. not so much.
took a while to find the TV Land channel but the show had a few funny lines. doubtful that Cleveland (or it's women) will enjoy being the butt of the joke and really, those 3 ladies would be hot anywhere...who are they kidding?
I thought it had potential. I did like the scene when they all went into the bar and were amazed they were being checked out. I'll give it another view before I decide.
I thought it was cute. Very run of the mill but if the writing improves it could be good. All four actresses are talented and funny.
I'm sorry, but is anyone else reminded of "The Comeback" with Betty White in the Lisa Kudrow role and the women of the house being played by washed-up TV actresses? Could not shake that feeling. I wish it were nearly as funny.
If we can put up with Two and a Half Men all these years, I think we can handle this. Good cast!
The horrid laugh track the sarcastic lines. It was pretty terrible boring cast no spark nothing. But i think it'll get a second season but not beyond that.
This show is HOT....it shows the power that four talented actresses can grasp. It is funny, up beat, raunchy and witty, Keeps you wanting more and makes you wish it was an hour long. Betty White was a plus addition to the show!
This show will be the newest hit funny show that TV has seen in a long time...Its Fabulously outrages!
These are four extremely talented women in a show that's frankly beneath them. It's poorly written, going from punchline to punchline, the directing is merely workmanlike, and the storyline has massive wholes in it - even for a sitcom. How could the John Schneider experience possibly convince Valerie's character to stay in Cleveland. What a load of hooey! On the bright side - the actors are wonderful and universal affection for them may give the production team time to get their act together or be replaced by pros who know what they are doing. All of these ladies are used to much better writing!!
I love this show.....think it's hysterical.....and I'm from Cleveland (and I'm not offended in the least!). One of our local newspaper writers does a very funny column every week rating how accurate the show is. We're not as thin-skinned as you think! :)
Eat well. Stay fit. Die anyway.
Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
