Kate Plus 8: Jon Who?

Kate Plus 8: Jon Who?

Kate Gosselin is back on TV and, for better or for worse, at least she's not dancing anymore. Last night was the series premiere of Kate Plus 8, which really did play out as the title suggests -- exactly like Jon & Kate Plus 8 minus Jon.

For the first few minutes of the pilot, you could feel the awkward tension surrounding the lack of Jon -- his name wasn't so much as uttered. It really felt like there was an 800-pound gorilla in the room, especially upon seeing the signs he put up around the house banning TLC from taping the children while Kate was oh-so-subtly doing a voice over saying how much her kids love the camera crew. Maybe that's just the fault of the powers that be, but it was very obviously pointed at Jon being the bad guy. In any case, when you watch as the kids freak out in excitement over the camera crew coming back, and then as the crew people play with the kids, it's hard to call Kate a liar, even though it's also hard to tell if she herself likes the crew for the way they interact with her children or because they are the vehicular device for her celebrity. Either way, the taping of Kate Plus 8 at least looks like a joyous family reunion. And, for the record, I believe the whole bunch of them when they say they don't like the paparazzi -- so don't worry, Kate, we don't need to see you do another interpretive dance about them.

Back to the children, whom have always been the real draw of the show for me: They got so old! I like that the new intro theme is all about them, definitely an improvement from Jon & Kate Plus 8. I really just forgot how much I liked the kids, especially after being so wrapped up in Kate's so-bad-it-was-amazing run on Dancing with the Stars. Even though their parents went through a very ugly, very public divorce, the children really do seem happy and back to their crazy Crooked House living, electronic-car riding lifestyles. As usual, Cara gets .5 seconds of screen time while Mady...well, let's just say she's currently going through her Terrible Nines.

As the episode title indicates, the first episode was all about the little kids' "Sixth Birthday Surprise!" and Kate took them all on a big trip to swim with dolphins, which she considers a "rite of passage"-- whatever. Six minutes in, Kate finally used Jon's name as she tells us that her ex had the kids on their actual day of birth. She calmly stated that it worked out pretty well, but not without casually slipping in that the children came back chewing gum, and if you recall from a Jon & Kate Plus 8 episode, Kate freaking hates it when the kids have gum because they manage to get it in their socks/carpet/teddy bears. And it was a refreshing little jab, if I do say so myself.

The rest of the episode was typical to the Jon & Kate Plus 8 format, with the kids being adorable and doing cool things while Kate flips out -- though this time around, she's attributing her rage to low blood sugar. As I mentioned before, things really weren't too different without Jon; Kate seems a little lonely, yes, but she always seemed sort of sad behind the eyes, and I definitely prefer her talking straight-up about divorce and being a single mom over passive-aggressively emasculating a silent, pissed-off Jon. Also, Jon sucks, so it was just generally better that he wasn't there.

Next up was "Inside Kate's World," a planet where I regret spending an hour. I was expecting the episode to be a little bit informative or, at the very least, entertaining, but after watching the first 15 minutes of Today Show co-host Meredith Vieira, an editor of People magazine, and an Inside Edition reporter talk about Kate's hair extensions and then subsequently seeing Kate get the extensions, I realized that this was going to suck. It was more of the same for the next 45 minutes, with Kate talking about her very predictable reactions to all of the things that we read about months ago in gossip blogs. The Dancing with the Stars scenes were the biggest draws, and even they were painfully boring. The only highlight of the hour was when Kate compared herself to Angelina Jolie, which was just begging for backlash.

This sort of "insider" episode seems totally fruitless, because I think that Kate's been a reality TV celebrity long enough for people to have decided already if they love her or hate her (which, according to TLC, are the only two possible opinions a person can have about Ms. Gosselin). This episode was clearly just an opportunity for the network to squeeze as much footage as they could out of the no-doubt thousands of hours they've taped of the Gosselin clan over the past few months. If there's one thing I learned from the two hour season premiere, it's there are actually people who genuinely love Kate and think she's a great mother/humanoid. While I think those people are the true crazies, maybe I'm no better, because I'll be joining them in watching Kate Plus 8 this summer.

What did you think of the premiere? Is Maddy going to need an intervention by the finale? Leave your thoughts below, and check out the other shows debuting this summer.

I used to agree with the decision to close the Jon and Kate + 8 board. But that was before TWoP decided to do constant reviews, stories, and updates on the Gosselins. All or nothing TWop, that's all I'm saying.

I think the show should be told from Mady's point of view. She's the only one who has the guts to say what she thinks right out loud and in your face. I think she's great!

Wow, what a terrible review. All random personal reactions, minimal actual recap, and no snark. Glad Jacob's "style" has taken over the rest of the site

In all fairness, no one really expects a high standard of quality from the blog posts any more. Occasionally, something in the blog will make me laugh, and it's like the universe has aligned to briefly be nice to me, like when you find a $5.00 bill on the sidewalk, or that time J-Lo fell on her ass on live tv.

What a relief! I thought I was the only one who hated Jacob's reviews. What a shame he recaps 2 of my favorite shows (True Blood & Dr Who). These days I skip the recaps and the blog posts and head straight to the forums.

Seriously, you're going to recap this crap. Surely there's actual worthwhile shows to waste space on then not so cute middle school children and their crazy assed mother who treated her husband so bad he lost his frigging mind (she never restrained her critical tongue when it came to him being "fat", "bald", "breathing too loud" and every damn thing she could find to bitch about ... no wonder he was no "fun." How much fun would you be being criticized every minute of your life by the person who claimed to love you? I'd rather watch a test pattern, thanks.

I cannot believe they put this train wreck of a show back on tv. I think it would be better if they left out Jon & Kate and just called it 8.

agree 100%. don't close a forum for mocking a child (good call, btw) then do it in blog post. that is not okay. Kate, though, she's fair game.

First of all, I love Jacob's reviews, I read his stuff avidly even before I watch a show. I don't see how this review sounded like him at all. Maybe he expects viewers to be intelligent, and that is the objection to his recaps? Secondly, I don't think TWOP are recapping this horrible "show", this was just a one-time thing, perhaps? Third, there is a difference between having a forum filled with often TOS breaking posts and a summary written by a reviewer - the site doesn't have offer both forums and reviews on any show.

I'm assuming this is going to continued to be recapped due to Rachel's remark:
If there's one thing I learned from the two hour season premiere, it's there are actually people who genuinely love Kate and think she's a great mother/humanoid. While I think those people are the true crazies, maybe I'm no better, because I'll be joining them in watching Kate Plus 8 this summer. Why watch a show you dislike otherwise. The recappers get paid x dollars per recap so I guess if the monies are good enough a recapper can tolerate most any rubbish. I just think there are better shows that are worth the time and money for the site admins to choose for recaps.

It's a shame that the viewing public, and more so TLC, cant see the train wreck count down not for Jon, not Kate, (i personally believe they have already arrived at rock bottom due to their hunger for fame) but for those 8 children that they'll cause by allowing this sad situation revealed to millions. Kate may "claim" that she travels non stop conducting interviews, photo shoots, and the oh so tedious work of learning to dance for only 500,000, (how can all those other middle class families with 8 kids possibly survive only making an average of 100,000 a year?) with the sole purpose of "providing for her family." but what happened to the projected 2.9 MILLION dollars the family made in two years of Jon & Kate plus 8? (CNN reported the family made 50-75k for each episode...i calculated for the very least they would have made per episode, 25k) That's not even including the various interviews and photo shoots they did on the side.

But more importantly, why is it so taboo to say they are BOTH terrible parents and role models? This shows appeal was in the fact that these were two very real people, in a not so normal situation having 8 children, and getting a glimpse into their lives. But what its turned into is a documentary of what happens when instead of having camera men as your guests, you turn them into a necessity to your family.

Again you ask, why should we blame Kate for living the American dream and trying to provide the best the world has to offer for her kids? Because what those kids need most right now, during a difficult time trying to figure out why their dad doesnt live at home anymore, or why there are so many people with cameras taking pictures of them playing in the front yard... is their mom. Stop the cameras, take at the very least, 3 years to fix your family privately. When the public stops hearing your tear jerking interviews with People magazine every other week, they will lose interest, aka: no more paparrazi stalking your family day in and day out (this is what you "claimed" you wanted). Cause even if convincing yourself that the public will never lose interest in your oh so thought provoking life (insert links to Omarosa's and "I Love New Yorks" myspace pages here), we will. Maybe not next year, or even the next six years, but we will. Which will make the real losers in this train wreck.... about 10 years old. Shame.

I should seriously win a Pulitzer for this one.

Kate is the most self-centered piece of c@#p ever. Watched one show and all she did was complain about how much she has to do, while losing her patience with her kids. Who told you to have 8 kids Kate??? You act like a martyr, but you are just a mean witch. Watch the re-runs and look of distain on your kids face, you narcisist! TLC should cancel this show for the sake of her kids - they need to be removed from both crazy parents!!!

As a retired educator my concern for these children long range is huge. I totally "get it" that Kate is stock piling money to put all these children through college and provide for their needs now, but I have viewed way too much negative attitudes in these children in their behavior right now. I see the need for therapy down the road. The twins, Mady & Cara, are already displaying Kate type of attitudes, behaviors, comments, and body language. Very scary! They are mirror images of her already. So sad to watch them act out in an attempt to manipulate their mom for attention. Very unattractive to say the least, but down the road this will only get worse. Now the little ones are modeling after the twins!! Kate is in for big problems later with all of these children. The twins are a mess right now and so not acting like normal 9 year olds. The temper tantrums & body language are not typical of emotionally healty 9 year olds. Look out when they are teens!

These children are all displaying serious manipulation techniques on their mother and succeeding thereby escalating future problems as they get older. I'm surprised she doesn't see this. Pehaps she should watch The Duggers to see how well behaved children act. Her kids should watch that show, too. That would be an eye opener for them and perhaps model after them instead of their mother.

Pairing up with wacho Sara Palin wasn't a smart move. You'll lose a lot of viewers over that pairing for sure!!!

Please NO KATE PLUS 8. Those children are awful!!! Just like Mum unfortunately. Maddy needs attention right now followed by the rest of them IT MAY BE TO LATE but maybe get them with Dad and his family if they can get over her and they just might turn out normal and get into college on their own merits NOT MONEY. They all desperately need to get away from Mum, she only had them as she knew she would get on TV some how and make money. Can we have more and longer shows of the beautiful Hayes Family. NOW THERE IS A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY.
