It's an Alloy show on ABC Family that even The CW passed on, so naturally it was assumed that Pretty Little Liars would be one of summer's biggest pieces of disposable crap. Then a strange thing happened -- when the pilot finally aired, it was obvious to everyone that this was not your average ABC Family show. Pretty Little Liars is almost edgy, as outdated a term as that is, and it's far more enjoyable in an unironic way than I ever thought it would be. In fact, aside from The OCD Project, it might just be the most compelling summer show on right now. I've attempted to examine why below.
It's Decidedly Non-ABC Family
Murder, drugs, girls kissing girls, teenage girls having sex with adult men, creepy blind fashionistas with Braille command stations -- the show is definitely dirtier, darker and more mature than anything the network is known for. It has its faults and things that don't make sense (why would a teacher risk his job and reputation for a teenage hottie he just met?), but so far nothing has been even remotely as ridiculous as the plotlines and dialogue that are staples of Secret Life of the American Teenager. I mean, a dead girl is terrorizing them, but no one's caused a plane crash by having sex or anything.
The Surprisingly High Production Quality
Hey, it doesn't look like cable access! That's new. Most of the actors can actually act, the upscale small town they live in looks as expensive as any of the Williams-Sonoma cul-de-sacs on ABC proper's shows and whoever is editing it actually knows how to craft a decent story properly. Plus, Bristol Palin's not on it. It's like a whole new network over there at ABC Family.
I Actually Like All the Main Characters
As I said before, the cast as a whole is shockingly competent. And the writing is capable enough to create almost fully realized characters with actual personalities. That sounds like an extremely low bar of expectations, but if you watch as much TV as I do, you know how rare it is. On Gossip Girl, for example, I love Blair, adore Nate, tolerate Serena, hate Jenny, really hate Dan, and would murder Vanessa if only it were possible to end the lives of imaginary people. Here, I pretty much like all of them. Hannah's former fat girl with daddy issues and a slutty mom is endearing; Spencer's stressed-out overachiever is a familiar trope, but the actress adds a certain depth to it; Aria whines about her parents too much, but makes up for it by being the most adorable person alive; Emily is a saint, and not even in an annoying way; and the blind girl is the most badass thing since Jack Bauer. Having a majority of characters the viewer actually enjoys watching: not a bad idea, almost every show on television.
I'm Invested in the Story
The mystery of who is behind all the menacing notes and scary flower arrangements is well-crafted and creepy, in a legitimately non-hokey way. There are quite a few suspects, none of whom are egregiously obvious as the culprit, and the text messages and lipstick mirror threats tend to crop up at just the right time to be perfectly eerie. They also break up the story exactly when it needs it (just when I'd had quite enough of Spencer kissing that idiot Ren last night, the camera cut to show that someone was filming them through the window), and not a minute too late, which helps to cut down on the teen show angst that tends to get so boring after a while.
I'm genuinely dying to know who's behind it all (my guess is one of the girls themselves), what happened to Allison, what the girls' involvement in it was and why. After just one episode, Pretty Little Liars went from "I'll watch it to laugh at it" to appointment television -- it's totally the Vampire Diaries of the summer. So sorry for your loss, CW.

I am addicted to this show - its such a fantastic summer escape. I'm dying to know who killed Allison.
Agreed! I DVRed it because I had nothing better to watch, but I've kind of gotten hooked. And even more amazingly, my boyfriend has gotten hooked with me. It's like a crazy weird splicing of Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries with a dash of Desperate Housewives at its best. A lot of it has to do with the writers having done well in setting up a simple premise and mystery and being able to deliver on it in those degrees. I DVRed the Gates too, but they've pretty much lost me since there are about 50 plots going on, and I *still* can't figure out what any of them are supposed to be about.
I'm addicted to this show as well. It is, by far, my summer guilty pleasure show.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! I was so upset when all my favorite shows wrapped for the summer. Like Jen, I DVRed it because I had nothing better to watch! This show totally surprised me. It definitely seems like a CW show... Most of my favorites are! Now I look forward to every Tuesday :)
I watched the first episode on hulu on a whim and immediately went and purchased the season on iTunes. (I don't get ABC Family.) That's how much I got into it - IN A SINGLE EPISODE.
Jen's description, "It's like a crazy weird splicing of Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries with a dash of Desperate Housewives at its best," fits in with my thoughts exactly. And, since I'm counting down the days until The Vampire Diaries returns, this is an excellent replacement. :)
"Spencer is a saint, and not even in an annoying way..."
You mean Emily, right?
This show is amazing and the series is even better. And I agree, CW's loss, kind of happy ABC Family took it because I don't watch the CW anymore.
The filming, music and editing have made it and also like you said, the characters...there is someone everyone can relate too.
The mixture of relationships with the mystery is phenomenal and this show, for me, is above-and-beyond any of the other ABC shows right now. Definitely taking them up a notch in my tv viewing.
Yes I like it. Great cast, Laura Leighton, Nia Peeples, Holly Marie Combs - even Ericka's boss from V. Plus they are plowing through mysteries and then setting up new ones. Tight writing - who would have thunk it.
This show is pretty good but stop hating on ABC Family--Greek is a fantastic show, with great writing and quality character development. They shouldn't be known just for Secret Life (which is, in my opinion, the most unintentionally entertaining show on TV.
I read the books and am hooked on the show. Even though Bianca Lawson has to be pushing 30 by now she's looking good. Plus the guys on the show are not your average hotties who can't act.
Extra points for not making me despise Tammin Sursok (Jenna/Blind Girl) whom I have hated since her days on Home And Away back here in Aus!
If Gilmore Girls has taught us anything, it's that the plural of cul-de-sac is CULS-de-sac, not cul-de-SACS. God, I miss that show.
As for Pretty Little Liars, I watched the first episode but stopped after that. It's ok for what it is, but it just didn't appeal to me, in the same way that Gossip Girl is an alright show but doesn't appeal to me either.
I, too, tuned in to check out its chuckle factor, but was pleasantly surprised. While the pilot was a bit clunky, the writers seem to have hit their stride. There is some occasional 'huh?' dialogue and product placement, but the overall flow is fantastic. LOVE the queer story line - thank you for not making it a sweeps week flameout, ABC Fam!
I completely agree with this, to my surprise. I watched it because I thought it was a Gossip Girl wannabe but it's actually much more compelling than most of GG. I'm totally "summer" hooked, in that I don't wait breathlessly for the next episode but am always excited when a new one appears.
There are certainly reminders that this is a show aimed at a much younger demographic, but I think they are balancing perfectly on the knife edge of darkness vs. melodrama.
Now all I need is you all to recap it!
Thank you so much for that. I believe it was like a 5 min long bit on Gilmore Girls. I watch repeats every weekend.
I love PLL too. I'm not surprised because I (like Bianca Lawson) am heading towards 30 and still watch way too much teen tv but I am surprised that I'm going out of my way to watch or DVR the show. It's addictive. I would say I think the blind girl is behind everything but that's too obvious unless it's Allison masquerading as the blind girl. She kind of snapped at the brother in the same way that Allison did.
You know why the town looks so good? It's the same town set used by Gilmore Girls. The cafe they hang out in? Yep, that Luke's Dinner. The high school? The one and only Stars Hollow high school.
Somebody please tell me Emily isnt dead
This show is great, I love it.
I just watched episode 6 and I'm dying to see the next one, I need to know what happends!
The actress playing Emily is the weakest of the bunch, but even she's improving. I actually look forward to watching this show every week!
JUST FOR GIRLS
i can't agree that it's even close to vampire diaries quality. the writing on pll is bad, bad, bad. the characters act in ways that just plain don't make sense. i was hoping it would be more veronica mars-y, which i realize is definitely asking too much, but then i didn't know it was an abc family show. it's not the worst tv show ever, but it's a far, far, far cry from the writing on vampire diaries.
I don't know about great, but it's above average. But the directing really sucks. They definitely need to work on that.
Please recap this show!
