BLOGS
I was slightly worried about the new format of Degrassi, in which the TeenNick show goes from a weekly series and turns into a show that airs four nights a week. I thought it might be overkill, especially given that fact that while I've watched the show since I was a teenager (back when now-Principal Snake was just a student himself) my interest in the show had started to wane in the last season. The plots were sort of simple and ground that the show had covered before, or just mere placeholders until favorites like Manny or Emma or Marco could return for an episode. However, with "The Boiling Point" (the moniker for this nightly-serialized run) has really upped the ante and renewed my interest in the show. Here's why....
No Waiting
Degrassi often does two part-episodes that leave you hanging. Who wants to wait a whole week? Not me. With this new format, plots are resolved the very next night. No longer do I have to wasting time pondering the fate of faux-teenagers. And since the episodes are still only a half-hour long, I'm not spending my entire summer (just some of it) watching shows meant for people 20 years younger than I am.
Twincest!
Admittedly, this only happened the one time... so far, but socialites Declan and Fiona do have the oddest twin sibling relationship on TV, so it could happen again. Watching the twins deal with the fallout of their illicit kiss is a far better use of their characters than having him direct a play about space invaders or be the object of Clare's fan fiction, or having her just be Holly J's friend. Now Fiona's got a therapist and an abusive spoiled rich-boy beau. He's got a long-distance relationship and prep school. It's almost like Gossip Girl.
It Still Goes There
This show has long prided itself on pushing the envelope and dealing with realistic teen situations, but last season was once again mainly about when to have sex, what happens when you are addicted to vampire novels and other sillier fare. Now in two weeks alone, we've seen the aforementioned twincest, a boob job scandal, a fake pregnancy, a gay football player struggling with his identity, drug abuse, physical abuse and group homes -- and it looks like alcoholism is coming soon! At this pace, there is really nothing that won't be touched on by the end of the summer.
Real Teens
One of the things that makes this show more realistic than things like 90210 is the way the kids look. While Shenae Grimes may be hottish now, when she was on this show, she still looked like an actual teenager. And now that they've added some new faces, many of them have acne, weird hair or just generally look awkward. Well, aside from that gorgeous new girl Bianca who basically looks like a Mia clone. Will she start modeling and have a baby in high school, too? Only time will tell.
Not-Annoying Music
This may not seem like a big deal, but trust me, if you've ever watched an episode of anything on MTV or The CW, it's filled with seemingly every single current pop hit. If you heard it on the radio, it will be on those shows, loud and annoying and often at inappropriate times. On Degrassi, the songs are still chosen with snippets of a lyric that match the scene, but they aren't the top hits and they aren't blaring at 100 decibels.
Screen Time
Occasionally this show suffers from having too large of a cast. The new kids either get thrown in your face so much that you hate them, or they are wallflowers until they get a plotline of their own. And with the original format, sometimes I could go a month without seeing a character I actually liked. Now, it's pretty balanced and if I don't care about Alli's love life, well, tomorrow I'll get to see something else.
All in all, I'm loving this new format and have high hopes for the rest of this summer of Degrassi. Now if I could just do that without having to see Nick Cannon several hundred times during each commercial break, I'd be really happy. I don't hate him, but he's everywhere. Seriously, how many jobs does he have? Does he think he's Seacrest?

I agree, the new format has some ups. The best being no more waiting a week for the next chapter. Better storylines too. Though I don't think that they're balancing characters' screen times well. For one, Alli's been in every episode so far and she's become far more annoying this season without Johnny. Her quest for all things superficial (popularity, a hot boyfriend) are grating this season. Give some other characters a chance to shine. Also, as stellar as the soundtrack has been this season ("Love, Love, Love" by As Tall As Lions during the Fiona/Snowglobe scene, terrific), I have found it a little too loud in some scenes. During one scene where Alli was talking to Chantay during Power Squad tryouts, I could barely hear what they were saying because the soundtrack was so loud. Other than that, this season has been pretty good so far and look forward to seeing what happens next.
I'm enjoying the format but I really really really miss Peter. He's in the credits - when will I see him? It's nice to see that your not focusing TOO much on 1 or 2 characgters cuz that always bugs me, like it used to be Paige Paige Page and last season way too much Holly J.
i miss spinner jimmmy paige and marco its not fair
@Carla Mang,
were they supposed to stay in high school forever hun?
And I HATE Chantay! Who does that TRAMP thinks she is!
When will she ever GRADUATE!?! She's been there since the Paige and Emma Days! The always said she was older than Danny and even He's graduated!
I LOVE AL TE NEW PEOPLE... ESPECIALLY ELI.. hes my new fav
Thank goodness someone else noticed this, and it wasn't just me! This show upped the ante brilliantly with Boiling Point! Also a fan of the original series, I was about to tune out after last season's subpar effort but I am so glad I didn't. I mean Emma and Spinner? Married?! Didn't see that coming lol and it lead into this Boiling Point season brilliantly. Sort of like hey it's ok to like this show again. And I have to say the last episode with the cheerleader/diet pills ordeal made me LOL. Squirts? Haha. Degrassi, you make this 30 year old feel 12 again.
I almost wasn't even gonna watch this season in fear that the plots would lack originality or creativity. Last few seasons were...mehh, but this season has got me hooked, especially all the new characters. Waaay better than season 8 or 9, that's for sure.
Well done, Blogger. I enjoy coming home to a new episode of Degrassi nights a week.
Agreed that the new girl Bianca totally looks like Mia.
hey if you guys get this letter please write back and please tell kc and declen to write back to me to please thanks loved the show its awsome keep up the good work

hey its me loved theshow if you guys need help with some fashion ideas please write back and aske kc and declen to write back to good work degrassi keep it up thanks for reading bye
Peter works at the new Dot and is only there as the older and wiser friend to occasionally give advice. I doubt he's going to get any storyline.
Yeah, Peter has been reduced to becoming this show's Nat from The Peach Pit.
I'll just say this--as a fellow brown girl with natural hair--why, WHY is Chantay's hair styled like that?
She looks crazy. Always.
It's bad enough that she's super grating but (to glen and katie's point), she's has been there since forever.
As Paige would say, 'Hun, The door is that way.'
Other than that, yeah--Season 10 is great. Carry on.
whats the deal are you jelous
you are jealous of everything
angel and ginger...so glad i'm not the only 30-something watching this show. i loved watched the original kids of degrassi grow up to be teachers and car sales men. i just found out that christine nelson and i share a birthday...it's amazing that spike is 40! i love how this show has pushed the envelope. it never has "a very special episode".
I agree, season 10 is totally addictive. I'm 25 and I've watched Degrassi TNG from the beginner and am surprised how much I like the new kids. I think they transitioned the characters well.
Love Adam, Eli, Claire, Holly J, Riley, and Zane. This season has gotten me to love Anya -- something I thought was impossible. Great casting on her parents who are adorably geeky.
This season is full of win!
