18 to Life: Worse Than A Prison Sentence?

My expectations for this show were pretty low. It's summertime. It's a comedy. It's on The CW. It's a Canadian import. That's a lot of things to be wary of. In fact, the only reason that I even watched was because of my undying love for Degrassi and because former Degrassi alum Stacey Farber was on the show. She was the sweet little Ellie who had a crush on a gay guy and began secretly cutting. However, there's nothing even remotely that interesting here.

The set-up is pretty simple, and utterly ridiculous. Tom (Michael Seater) and Jessie (Farber) grew up next to door to each other, fell in love and on a dare decided to get married. Neither set of parents approve. Tom's are uptight and had high hopes for his college career. Jessie's are hippies who don't believe in marriage as an institution. Their friends also aren't quite so enthused with the idea.

One might ask, "With a premise like that, how can you lose?" Well, it's simple. The writing, while admittedly well-paced, isn't even remotely funny. I didn't even chuckle during the first two episodes that aired last night, and Farber's charm can only carry a show so far. The rest of the show is just very contrived and overly familiar, and basically feels like a second-rate Disney Channel show. Not even Hannah Montana -- more like The Suite Life on Deck or something. It's watchable if you're a bored teen who's tired of Disney and Nick reruns, but it's pretty unbelievable that this show merits a primetime hour on network television. Even if that network is the CW.

Honestly, much as I adore Farber, I don't think I can subject myself to any more episodes. I don't care about the bickering that will inevitably happen as they adjust to living in his family's attic. There's only so many hours in the summer, and if I'm going to indulge in shows meant for young kids, I'll be watching Degrassi and Pretty Little Liars instead. Sorry, Stacey. Hope your next show is better.

Oh hey, it's a scripted show! Let's rag on it, so we can get more Real Housewives and Jersey Shore, which are the only types of shows we like these days!

How about The Real Housewives of the Jersey Shore??

Actually - if I could get everyone to donate $10 - we could buy Bravo for the sole reason of pulling the plug on it. What do ya say kids????

It's not that bad. I saw the whole series on the CBC channel out of Windsor. Cute, albeit predictable at times.

Full disclosure: I work for a CW affiliate. In promotions. It is HARD as HELL to have this job over the summer months with NOTHING to promote. At least this is something mildly entertaining and new to most Americans.

And I agree with the other posters: no more reality TV, please!

Aside from re-runs of "The West Wing" what does Bravo have on that isn't a "reality show"? House re-runs and occasional movie re-runs. Maybe we can buy them and just rename it "Re-run TV" - TWOP would be spun off to it's own web-site once again - where it should have stayed.

I downloaded this show way back when it first premiered in Canada because I was excited to see Stacy starring in her own series. I had the same reaction as Angel. Utter disappointment. The show is so corny and full of old cliches. Uptight conservative parents must deal with hippie parents? Really? That was barely funny back in the '80s. It's even less funny now. The show isn't even cute enough to at least hang on to the dopey love story between the two leads.
