It's been widely known for quite some time that Aerosmith's Joe Perry has some issues with his frontman Steven Tyler, but those issues have rarely been as hilariously expressed as they were today, with Joe Perry's comments on Tyler's American Idol judging gig: "It's a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It's one step above (Teenage Mutant) Ninja Turtles. It's his business, but I don't want Aerosmith's name involved with it. We have nothing to do with it." Oh yes, the salt of the earth, anti-establishment, integrity-filled Aerosmith name. The very name that was famously lent to these independent non-profits.
American Idol
Danny Gokey famously butchered "Dream On" in his season, and little baby mama's boy Aaron Kelly performed "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" in his. Apparently the advertising that show sells is OK if it's designed to put royalties in Joe Perry's pocket? That's a difference I can understand -- I, too, have always hated those Coke cups for never giving me any of their money.
Disney World
There's a damn Aerosmith ride at Disney World. For real. There is also one at Euro Disney (I refuse to call it Disneyland Paris). That's right -- Joe Perry has teamed up with both Fox News Corp. and Disney and still manages to think himself above commercialism. Which reminds me of that time he literally went commercial...
Dodge
Remember when "Just Push Play" was the official song of Dodge motors for an entire year back in the early 2000s? Now, why would you participate in a commercial, other than to sell people something and to make money? I'm actually interested to know what Joe Perry thinks the completely backwards answer to that is.
Glee
Another Fox show (albeit a better one) that is chiefly designed to sell something -- soundtracks -- Glee won itself an Emmy for having NPH sing "Dream On" far better than Danny Gokey did on Fox. Though, to be fair, we would never deny NPH anything either. Especially if we were getting paid for it, like Joe Perry was.
Rugrats
Aerosmith wrote a song for the Rugrats Go Wild soundtrack, a property that, for the record, is about 100 steps below Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Armageddon
Performing a song you didn't even write (Diane Warren has that dubious honor) to cash in on a -- gasp! -- Michael Bay blockbuster? Yikes, Aerosmith. You may just be even more commercial than The Who.
There's also Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the fact that they wrote the theme to the first Spider-Man movie, and their integral role in showing the audience that Mrs. Doubtfire was a dude who looked like a lady. Among others. I hate American Idol just as much as the next person who enjoys not being bored by filler and bad Ford commercials, but Joe Perry is a ridiculous person who is lashing out at Steven Tyler for other things entirely, is what I'm saying. Your thoughts?

Selling out at its best (and most fun!)
I've never understood the concept of 'selling out' really. I mean, if it's wrong to accept money for music licenses, then why sell concert t-shirts, tickets to concerts, or CD's? I don't believe that artists should be monks. To me the term 'sell out' exists solely for people like Montel Williams endorsing the 'free payday loan' scam by fronting their commercial.

Ok I love Aerosmith and Joe Perry but..... For Christ sakes Joe Paerry was already on Idol.Remember he did played while SANJAYA sang, ( If you call it that). Come on Joe Your jealous nature is really showing!!
And let's not forgot the high art, "Be Cool", in which Joe Perry and the other members of Aerosmith appeared - mocking bands that sell out.

That Aerosmith ride at Disneyworld really ROCKS. Lots of g-force momentum, it was the perfect antidote for my stomach after riding The Tower of Terror. So it's very clear Aerosmith sells out their products (read songs) for financial game; the validity of it should be based on the quality of the market. I'm not a big fan of American Idol, but I can think of a lot worse markets, esp. in the reality tv realm. Does sound like he's in a snitty mood, and having lots of conflicts with Steven Tyler. He should suck it back and keep those comments to himself. Have their spats privately, not all over the media.
These guys were much better when they were all doped out. At least they were too comatose to give interviews.

Joe Perry wouldn't be where he is today if not for Steven Tyler. Yes, he's a great guitarist, but seriously, who do you pay to see? Steven is Aerosmith. Joe is just jealous.
