BLOGS
It may seem unlikely that an original HBO gangster drama with a stellar cast and Oscar winner Martin Scorsese behind the camera would have much, if anything, in common with the gang of overly-tanned fist pumpers wreaking havoc on both clubs and our nation's intelligence. But I was surprised to find plenty of similarities between Boardwalk Empire and Jersey Shore beyond both of them being set on the sandy shores of the Garden State. Some things just never change, especially in South Jersey.
Few People are from South Jersey
In both shows, most of the characters actually hail from the greater New York area, or elsewhere, and have just made the seaside destination their home for fun, profit and debauchery.
Constant Flow of Alcohol
Prohibition doesn't stop Nucky from running a very lucrative business dealing in intoxicating liquids on Empire. In fact, it just increases his customers' desire for it in any way shape or form (even if that means distilling it from potatoes). I'm pretty sure he'd have loved to get his hands on some Ron-Ron juice.
Boobs
I thought I saw a lot of breasts bandied about on JS, especially thanks to JWOWW's revealing outfits, but that was nothing compared to the amount of topless women that appear on a weekly basis on Empire.
Foul Language
Both shows have taught me new curse words, or at least interesting euphemisms for sexual acts. TV really is educational.
Guys Beating on Women
Sure, Ronnie only gave Sammi an emotional beating by cavalierly hooking up with fat waitresses, but on Empire, guys literally backhand their women to keep them in line. Allowing females a degree of self-esteem was apparently frowned upon in the 1920's... just like it is now on reality TV.
D.T.F.
Whatever the sex act, whatever the century, there are always plenty of ladies happy to get down on their knees, or assume other positions, for their Jersey boys.
Fights
Seriously, Ronnie would have fit right in with the Boardwalk bunch. He and Al Capone both love to look at trampy, scantily clad ladies, drink and punch people (or kill them, in Al's case) during their uncontrollable, testosterone-fueled rages.
A Concern for Others
Like the brethren of Jersey Shore, Nucky always looks out for his fellow man to make sure that he is taken care of with a lady of the night before the evening ends. He's pretty much the ultimate wingman.
Nicknames
Nucky. Snooki. Need I say more?
