Community's Joel McHale and Donald Glover Fill in our Lesson Plan

The new season of Community premieres tonight, and since it was one of our favorite new shows last year, and the cliffhanger finale had us dying for more episodes, we jumped at the chance to do a last-minute interview with stars Joel McHale and Donald Glover. They told us what we can look forward to this season, where they think their characters' love lives are headed, and which reality shows they'd kick ass at.

Donald, was it your idea to sport the Spider-Man pajamas in the opening of tonight's episode?
Donald Glover: That was not my idea. The writers came up with that. Everything that is happening to us in real life, Dan [Harmon] will put on the show. He was following that whole Spider-Man thing, and he liked it, so he wanted to pay homage to it.
Joel McHale: And there's another homage to it in an upcoming episode, but we won't say what it is.
Glover: It's pretty fun.

Joel, I talked to you after the first time your character kissed Annie, during the Debate Team episode. At the time you thought it was a one-off; were you surprised to see it come back in the finale?
McHale: I think it actually was a one-off, but the Internet then took that and ran with it, and there were Websites that were created -- one is called Fuck Yeah Jeff and Annie! -- and Dan absorbs everything and then makes it really good...
Glover: Like food.
McHale: ...So the season finale was kind of a culmination of all that stuff, and in the season premiere that all gets dealt with, and not in a way that wraps everything up. It's messy. There's even a line in tonight's show that's like, "Real life is not like TV, real life is messy," and that's how Dan likes it, so it worked out. There was also a debate whether Jeff, who's obviously a lot older than Annie's character, that they should even be near each other. So that was a fun little thing to also play against.

With Jeff and Annie reaching some sort of resolution tonight, does that mean we might ever see a revisitation of Annie and Troy?
Glover: I really don't know. There's a possibility, but I think both of them just like.. liking people. Like, he's always gonna try and get some. They're both 18, they're both kinda going through some shit, and Troy just likes girls, and she likes boys.
McHale: And as you saw from the season premiere, Troy sleeps with Betty White.
Glover: Oh, yeah -- you saw that, right?

Well, it might have been implied...
Glover: Implied? What about those two days of filming? I was told by the director that this was gong to be my Gia.
McHale: I thought it was really well done. Beautifully shot.

There's also a new, horrible level reached in the dysfunctional relationship between Jeff and Britta tonight. Is the possibility of romance between them gone?
McHale: It may seem that way, but I don't know yet. It could be, I guess, but we don't see the scripts too far ahead, so people ask us, like, "What's gonna happen to your character this year?" And I'm like, "Well, he's gonna get shot off into space and be the first person on Mars." So I don't really know where it's going.
Glover: Dan Harmon is really good at following the heat. If something feels good or makes sense or works and is interesting, he 's probably gonna do that. He's not gonna force people to come together or break apart. Me and Danny [Pudi], Troy and Abed, kinda just grew out of us hanging out, and he was very attentive to that.
McHale: Because at the beginning of the season, Troy and Abed weren't connected.
Glover: It was supposed to be me and Pierce.
McHale: And then, obviously, the chemistry between Abed and Troy was so terrific, and then you got the Spanish rap, the Ernie and Bert tag, the Eddie Murphy and Batman stuff... It was a classic comedy team, and classic characters being together.

Speaking of Batman, I loved last year's Halloween episode. I hear this year's episode is going to be even better.
Glover: It is going to be better. I am so stoked for that.
McHale: Not that last year's was bad...
Glover: No. I think that Dan is actively trying to beat every episode this year, and the Halloween episode, which is a zombie episode--
McHale: It's a zombie movie. Which we're still shooting.
Glover: We're still shooting it. It's a zombie movie, and it is such a great... It's a good story, and it's shot beautifully by Anthony Hemingway, who did True Blood. It works out really great.
McHale: We're also doing an Apollo 13 episode, in which we're all trapped in a space...
Glover: ...vehicle, of some sort, and you'll have to see that to get that. And there's a stop-motion animated Christmas episode. So these are all things that we've loved doing, and it's pretty great.

Joel, you talk about reality television a lot on The Soup, but which reality shows do you guys think you'd be good at?
McHale: Bad Girls Club, definitely.
Glover: I have to say, I'd probably be good at Jersey Shore, you know, just going around making sure they take all of their herpes medication.
McHale: And this is the first time I've seen Donald out of an Ed Hardy T-shirt.
Glover: And just being like, "What is wrong with you?" I think there needs to be a straight man all the time there, saying, "What is going on?"
McHale: "Why are you drinking toner?"
Glover: "Snooki, why are you drinking bleach? That's not gonna get you drunk. Situation, really? You changed your name to 'The Situation'? All right. When your son goes to PTA meetings, you're gonna be like, 'Mr. Situation.' That shit's gonna happen."
McHale: Is the kid going to be "Noah The Situation," or something? ...He's doing terrific on Dancing With the Stars, though. That guy can move.
Glover: He can move. He's got some hips.
