Zombies, Conans and the cockroach-like survival abilities of Hung.
You've probably heard already, but there's a horrifying hostage situation developing at the Discovery Channel's headquarters in Maryland as we write this. Everyone's covering it, but CNN's minute-by-minute coverage has been the most immediate so far. [Update: the suspected gunman was reportedly shot and killed by police. No hostages harmed.]
The new Apple TV is much awesomer than the last Apple TV, and among other things, it will offer 99 cent rentals of TV shows. Personally, I'd rather suffer through mountains of ads than pay 99 cents every time I want to watch a show I couldn't DVR for whatever reason (which happens to me about a dozen times a week), but it's still cool.
I know some of you hate zombies now all of a sudden (what's with that, guys?), but AMC has preemptively renewed The Walking Dead for a second season. Sorry, but the show looks incredible and even if it didn't -- buzz is buzz is buzz.
Also, HBO has renewed Hung for a third season, even though it's disgusting and no one watches it, not even me, and all I watch is disgusting things.
NBC is teaming up with Ronald D. Moore for a series they're calling "the adult Harry Potter," which is a hilarious description I sincerely hope they keep for its actual launch. Hell, I hope that ends up being the official title.
And last but not least, Conan is the name of Conan's new show, and it will debut on November 8. Are you actually going to watch it past the premiere?

Yes, I will watch Conan religiously if I can actually get it up here in Canada (TBS isn't offered on any of any premium sat. packages yet) and what do you mean Hung is disgusting? It's hilarious! Thomas Jane does a really good job, and the supporting cast is solid too (includ. Anne Heche, and I'm not one of her fans normally). Are you offended that a MAN is being exploited sexually for once? At least he doesn't seem to mind it...
There's no suddenly about it, I've always hated zombies. They're not even scary, they're just dumb and annoying. The recent popularity of zombies in all types of entertainment is baffling to me, but it allows me to hate more stupid people, so that's a plus.
Amen to that, JB: I don't much care for vampires either but at least, you know, they can speak and be 'witty' and have motivations. I guess it makes sense: they're the Triffids or the Body Snatchers of our time, because - unlike vampires - once you cross the threshold, you're completely gone. I accept that but, at the end of the day? It was vaguely amusing when they were ironically used in bad zombie films; now it's come full circle and people are generally fascinated by mindless growling things barracading screaming 'young adults' in their homes? Um, no.
Hung...and a 3rd season? SERIOUSLY??? The show has a very good cast--but Thomas Jane, Jane Adams, and Rebecca Creskoff are genuine talents on a show with terrible execution and a knack for being unremittingly depressing. I guess HBO was nostalgic for the days when no one could quite understand why they kept renewing ARLI$$ (a show that didn't suck nearly as much as HUNG does) and they'll certainly have a new series in that WTF? category now.
So watching whatever 'the adult Harry Potter is'. I'm already sold.
I like zombies because they can't be reasoned with. There's no negotiating with a zombie. I like them because they aren't good and they aren't evil. They just are. They are ravenous, implacable, and relentless.
I think, when done properly, zombies amp the suspense because the hero has to do something to get out alive. Gets hard in a mob.
As for Hung...wow. Saw half of the first season and could not stand it. It was too slow and the stories weren't all that good...they weren't exactly bad, but it was all very "meh" for me.
I love Zombies but I dont think I could eat a full one
"Shaun of the Dead" should have been the begining and the end of the most recent Zombie craze. Nuff said.
I've been scared sh*tless by zombies since I was a kid, so hating them is no new phenomenon for me. Nor is disliking Conan O'Brien, so I won't be watching his show at all.
In the Afterword Simon Pegg wrote for the second volume of The Walking Dead he talks about how zombies are creepy because they are our death personified but also the fear of collectivism swallowing up our individualism. He also points out that their appeal is kind of in the everyman, that those who fight them don't have to be superheroes and allows the reader/viewer to ask themselves what they would do. I am a huge fan of the comic, where most of the scariest moments involve the savagery of other humans as opposed to the dead, so I just hope they do it right.
While Louis Vuitton has always been a classic style, his appearance always kept pace with the changing requirements in order to offer something new and fresh for the occasion.
