BOOM! It's a veritable explosion of TV on DVD this week, as even more of my favorite shows hit the home market. And while I understand the timing is fully intentional, I still wish they'd release these sets earlier, because now I can't possibly re-watch them all before the new seasons start up. Damn you, cross-promotional marketing! You too, new Golden Age of Television!
Fringe: The Complete Second Season
Hey Star Trek -- your mirror universe officially sucks. It's nowhere near as cool as the alternate reality of the Fringe-verse, where the twin towers are still standing and Olivia Dunham is a sarcastic brunette and Walter Bishop is a complete badass and blimps are all the rage. Come to think of it, the regular Fringe universe is also pretty great, what with the shadow killers and the giant hookworms and the vanishing buildings and the time-travelling Peter Wellers and the drug-induced musical hallucinations.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season Five
If you aren't watching this, one of the funniest shows on TV, then you're definitely missing out. There's a reason this show has lasted five (well, now six) seasons, and it's because these lazy, stupid, insensitive bastards are worse people than the cast of Seinfeld, if that's actually possible, and yet they're so much more loveable. Like idiotic, money-hungry puppies!
Grey's Anatomy: The Complete Sixth Season
Yeah, a lot of stuff happened, we suppose, what with Derek getting promoted, Izzie getting fired, Hunt getting PTSD and the two hospitals merging, but all of these events seem unimportant when you know that, at the end of the season, most of these people will get shot.
Glee: The Complete First Season
It's all here -- every single episode of the first season of the overhyped, loved-or-loathed, smash hit. Yes, it's got its flaws, and even its terrible musical numbers, but it's mostly a lot of fun, and I'm not just saying that because I used to be in an a cappella group. If you already bought the first half of the season -- nothing to be ashamed of -- the Road to Sectionals, you can also pick up Part 2, The Road to Regionals.
Private Practice: The Complete Third Season
It's hysterical that grown, professional adults who have to make judgment calls about other people's lives on a daily basis do the same partner-swapping and fooling around on their off-time as the teenagers on 90210.
The League: The Complete First Season
It's a show about actors playing people in a league where they pretend to manage teams of professional football players, which basically means this show is about six steps removed from reality. And yet the characters on the show -- a condescending lawyer, a whipped husband, a sore winner, a distracted stoner and an obnoxious doctor -- all seem so very, very familiar. It's like they took people I knew and made a show about them.
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Third Season
Nerds + OCD + comic book references + video games + foreign accent + Jewish humor + cute neighbor + eccentric family members = comedy. Not so much a theory as a proof.
The Good Wife: The First Season
Julianna Margulies deserves all the awards and nominations she got for playing the wife of a disgraced politician returning to the legal work force, as does Archie Panjabi as the investigator who helps her win her cases.
Also out this week:
Designing Women: Season 4 Once they eliminate Betty White, the Women vs. Girls war will be decided.
Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job: Season 4 What can I say that the title doesn't already?
Rules of Engagement: The Complete 3rd Season I can't wait until Patrick Warburton is awesome again.
Judge John Deed: Season Two After three episodes, I realized this is nothing like Judge Dredd.
Ghost Adventures The Travel Channel? Does every network have their own ghost-hunter show now?
Red vs. Blue: The Recollection Collection The last three seasons, held together with a sticky grenade.
Robin Hood: The Complete Series I haven't watched it, but it sure looks more fun than the Russell Crowe movie.
Renegade: Season 2 Lorenzo Lamas, you magnificent-haired bastard.
