TWoP 10: Why Big Brother Sucked This Season

Every July, we get our hopes up that the contestants in the Big Brother house will keep us entertained for the whole summer, or that the twists that BB over-hypes will actually pay off. This summer, like in so many others, we were disappointed. It doesn't even matter that this season isn't over yet, and it certainly doesn't matter who wins -- there is no redeeming it at this point. These are the biggest reasons why:

10. Lack of sequester
Why did it take until last night for us to have a chance to see the folks sitting around the house chatting about who got kicked off and who the new HOH is? That's pretty much the only thing that gets us through the back end of most seasons.

9. Wednesday instead of Tuesday episodes
We've complained before about the fact that the feeds allow us to find out who won veto, who used veto and who is nominated well in advance of the broadcast airings, but waiting until Wednesday for the veto ceremony on CBS is beyond ridiculous.

8. Pointless audience involvement
When will they finally let us vote people out, or at least have one penalty vote? Instead, they expect us to call in for stupid votes like which foods people get to eat or who should be a saboteur for a week. What a waste of time and opportunity.

7. The Brigade
It's a ridiculous name for an alliance (though we'd expect no less considering it includes a grown man who calls himself "The Meow Meow"). And while there are three of them seemingly in the final four, it's by sheer miracle. They don't have a grasp on how to get things accomplished and by and large really stink at winning challenges... and at having any foresight. They voted out the only one with half a brain as soon as they could. Can't wait to see how they defend their lack of play to the jury.

6. Saboteur evicted immediately
This summer's big twist wasn't siblings that didn't know about each other or secret twins but rather a saboteur who was out to wreak havoc on the house instead of attempting to win money. And... she got voted out the first week. If they ever try to bring back this "twist" in a future season, they need to find someone remotely likeable and competent so they could stick around for a while.

5. Too many "showmances"
Rachel and Brendon, Hayden and Kristin, Matt and Ragan, Lane and Britney. Everyone was all coupled up and while we don't mind the random hookups, hearing them gush about their feelings and whatnot just gets annoying. Just say you're hooking up for the sake of the game. Own it.

4. Useless second saboteur
When we selected Ragan to take over saboteur duties, we thought that he'd actually do something like vote against the house (which, aside from Kathy, didn't happen this summer) or really commit some psychological warfare. Instead, he did dumb little things (at the suggestion of some pre-screened Facebook users) that the other players barely even registered.

3. Lame punishments
We will admit that having Brendon get dunked in chum for hours was actually a true punishment, but taking away the houseguests' silverware, making them dress in penguin suits or hippietards or talk via sock puppets are not especially torturous things for them to have to do. Even the have-not room didn't seem all that bad. Next summer: solitary confinement (for real, and not where people can sit next to the door and talk to them) or take away their water so they can't shower or eliminate access to the food pantry entirely. Something that actually makes being in the house more difficult.

2. Lack of actual twists
The saboteur suggested that a pair of houseguests might have previously known each other -- that would have actually been a refreshing twist. With the saboteur's early elimination, there weren't a lot of game-changing or truly unexpected events, other than perhaps the Diamond Power of Veto or Rachel's brief return visit.

1. The most interesting people were voted out early
There's no controlling this, but Andrew and Rachel got eliminated pretty early in the game and now we're stuck with dullards who don't know how to dance or make conversation about anything other than golf. And golf is already tediously boring. While Andrew and Rachel might have grated on our nerves, they did make for entertaining and fight-filled television, which is more than we can say for the rest of the house.

I agree with most of the suggestions, except please don't let the audience vote people out, that was a disaster in season one.

The audience vote puts too much power in the hands of the editors. They could basically decide the game by how they edit different players.

It was just stupid to build up the Saboteur twist with no backup plan for keeping the saboteur around past Week 1. Especially if you pick a complete headcase like Annie.

Once the big twist died in Episode 3, it was bound to be a boring season. Blame the short-sighted producers.

I have never seen so many people who supposedly have big degrees who are SOOOO stupid!!! they can't string together a sentence! maybe an intelligence test before letting them in the house??

I've seen about half of the seasons and I enjoyed this season more than most
Reasons BB didn't suck this season 1.Britney is very pretty and lights up the cave where I have my tv, she is also very funny. 2.The sock puppets. 3.Memorable cast members Rachel, Britney, Hayden, Enzo, Matt, and Kathy, that's a decent percentage.4.Julie. She gets IT! How does this woman not win best reality show host every year? The makeup overload, the sparkle, the Chenbot, the slutty high priced hooker wardrobe, the mindless interviews. 5.The crying and Brandon "I love yous" made me squirm.6.Every week had several laugh out loud moments. I think that's enough to make it not suck.

This was an incredibly boring season. Because of the cast btu saying the Brigade is composed of Bad players is just laughable. There's a reason why they're in the final 4. Because they knew how to avoid becoming targets (3 alpha-males no less) and only won the competitions they need to. They saw Matt positioning himself between him and the rest of the house and wisely eliminated him before he could glide to the end. Boring yes. Poor players, not by any stretch.

Well, BB12 did great in the ratings, so I guess it didn't suck quite enough for viewers to stop watching.

The only player deserving of "Fan Favorite" this season is Andrew. Atleast he attempted to shake things up in the house, he went out with a bang AND these slobs weren't as blatant because he cleaned. The rest of this cast sucked.

Let's face it, we say we want likeable people, but we don't. We want to see people with baggage and anger management issues and cockiness. It's sad, but it is true.... I might like this group better, but I'm not entertained.

Oddly enough, this is kind of my fave season of Big Brother. ONLY due to the fact that I have had no rooting interest. Therefore, I didn't care who did/didn't get voted out. Also this IS the lamest final 4, evah! Britney is the only one to actually have done anything remotely resembling game play. I doubt Enzo & Hayden have a brain between them.

Kathy- interesting? What show were you watching? That lady was an absolute bore and sucked at competitions. They should have voted her out in week 1.

Way back in season one, America was allowed to vote for who left. But then, we got things like a whole town coming together to vote off one person, and TPTB nixed the "America votes" deal.

But yeah. I haven't cared about this show since season two for most of the reasons mentioned above.

When America voted for evictions in season 1, we voted off the mean people. But now I think we've learned the mean people make better drama. Evil Dick was, well, an Evil Dick but America loved him. Even in season 2, Will probably still would have won.
I think we've grown up enough to vote again.

The only thing entertaining all season was watching Brendon take on the whole house by himself after Rachel got evicted. Funny thing is he was winning for awhile against them all plus a 4 men alliance. (which shows how bright they are) But after that, ehh. If the Kristen woulda stayed around longer, it would have made this season better. I'd say this season deserves a C-

My favorite Endemol reality show was a Spanish language one where the competitors were aspiring actors and had to live together and compete in acting scenes judged by professionals. The pros put up one on the block and the house picked the other and the public voted one of them out. It was really entertaining except that jealousy ruled the house and the most talented people kept getting put up for elimination.

I like Rigs-in-Gear's comment about the "aspiring actors" competition. Admit it or not, most BB contestants have agents and/or plan a "career" in Hollywood.

What we want is something or someone to care about--it may be people to genuinely like (which is very difficult to sustain throughout the game) or people to hate (much easier) or real rivalries, etc. The problem with this season is, it hasn't had any of that. Just a bunch of boring people, a few who are weird or annoying, and no real excitement. I don't think the problem is systemic, though--just an lackluster cast. Not bad players, just boring.

this is so true. the remaining contestants in the final 4 have made the entire game unwatchable. going back to the beginning, annie was an epic failure as the saboteur. they should have given the saboteur the dpov so that she at least wouldn't get voted out first!

I still think America's Vote is a good idea, maybe just not the way it was done in Season 1. Have America be just one vote in the whole scheme of things. It could make for some very interesting game play if the players not only have to worry about how each other is going to vote, but have to worry about that extra vote they have almost idea how it's going to go.

Miguel, I agree with your suggestion 100 percent. America having one collective vote each elimination creates a very interesting scenario and dynamic. Great idea. I hope the Big Brother powers-that-be read this blog and consider your suggestion.

Hmmmm..didnt you watch the first season of Big Brother? The worst of all time and they had the audience vote them out and the audience ended up voting out the most interesting guests

In response to Dave H,Then the “public” can not have it, the public can not be allowed to steal the rights of the individual, the government is not put in place for that end.The constitution is the limits on government, so your question is really what if the people want more government, in this day and age I find that ridicules.

An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!
