Glee: The Movie Musicals They Should Tackle Next

This week's Glee takes on the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show with a typical Glee spin, and while the show has done songs from famed musicals before (as well as artist-themed episodes), this is the first time it's lifted all of an episode's tunes from one single movie. So that got us thinking about all of the other movie musicals (not just stage ones, though we'd love to see Lea Michele reprise her Spring Awakening role, or see Rachel and Quinn do "Popular" from Wicked) that would potentially make excellent fodder for the New Directions gang. Here's our wish list:

Moulin Rouge
Not sure how this would come about within the context of Glee, but we'd love to see them stage this crazy film. We can just see Santana as Satine, singing about diamonds and the like. It might be an easy choice to have Artie play Toulouse, since he's shorter than the rest in his wheelchair, but singing "Nature Boy" would give him something to do. Coach Beiste as The Duke (in an obviously tamed down storyline)? Yes, please.

Xanadu
We love the campy movie, and since Cheyenne Jackson, who starred in the subsequent stage version, is already on Glee as the rival choir director, let's get him back in roller skates and have Brittany as the goddess brought to Earth to inspire him. Perhaps he can throw some big concert at April's old roller rink?

Grease 2
Puck's been MIA for a few episodes, but can he come back as T-Bird leader Johnny? He'd be in love with Quinn, while she's smitten with a mystery boy on a motorcycle (naturally this would be Lady Lips/Sam in disguise). A cool rider, if you will. There would be bowling and a whole subplot in which Rachel would have sex with Finn because he was going off to war, Puck could sing about the birds and the bees to a hot new teacher, there would be Hawaiian luaus and it would all just be fantastic.

The Sound of Music
When Mr. Schue suddenly takes ill, a substitute (named Maria) could be brought in to help raise the voices of the glee kids. She takes them back to basics with "Do-Re-Mi," tells them about her time as a nun and takes them on a field trip to some vast hills to see some WWII reenactments. We'd cast Rachel as Liesl so she can sing "Sixteen Going on Seventeen."

Saturday Night Fever
We're not sure about Finn's singing or his dancing abilities, but we bet he can handle walking around with a bucket of paint and doing some basic disco moves. He could probably snag an old jumpsuit from Burt Hummel's closet. He and Rachel could compete in a dance contest and she could rock some feathered hair until he dumps her for Brittany because she's the better dancer. But we'd leave out the whole unseemly gang bang and suicide attempt, you know, for TV.

Hairspray
It was a movie then a musical then another movie, so why not remake it again for TV? Mercedes would be Tracy, trying to fit in despite her curvy size and fighting for equality for everyone (it could totally be an anti-bullying PSA). Mr. Schue actually played Link Larkin on Broadway, but he's older now so he'd have to be Corny Collins, emceeing a special live fundraiser for the show choir. New Zefron-lite, a.k.a. Sam, would be a perfect Link. And if anyone was fit to be Miss Baltimore Crabs, it would be Sue Sylvester. Bring on the aerosol!

Mamma Mia!
Frankly, the plot of this musical-turned-movie is pretty stupid and since we already know who Rachel's birth mother is, we can't have her inviting possible moms to her wedding in a role reversal. So just give us an all-ABBA episode, throw in some teen angst about kids wanting to get married too young and old lovers reuniting. Have someone belt the hell out of "The Winner Takes It All" and make sure all of the guys sound better than Pierce Brosnan (not a hard task... even for Finn) and we're good to go.

And while I don't want them to do all of Chicago, especially since Kurt already sang us a snippet of "Mr. Cellophane," I would really love to see the girls try "Cell Block Tango." He had it coming, indeed! Also, if the Rocky Horror episode is a success, they could always do the sorta-sequel Shock Treatment for next Halloween.

I would like to see songs from Disney movies repurposed and subverted, but Glee is a Fox show.

As much as I love Grease 2, Rachel and Finn already discussed how bad it was in "Duets".

I am loving the Grease 2 love! And you've covered all the bases. Though now I'm seeing Creepy Jacob sitting in the scaffolding above the stage, dropping leaves on the "I'll Be Your Girl for All Seasons" participants.

How about Glee focus on characters & plot and stop with the gimmicks. This show had potential until the show failed to make sense one week to the next.

I still think they can do chicago, they just need to omit Mr Cellophane, Razzle Dazzle is marvelous and I can see Sue being Billy in that version.

Also Jesuschrist Superstar. And I will like Rachel to play Judas and Finn Jesus Christ with Quinn as Mary Magdalene.

Yeah, Rent, Wicked, Spring Awakening, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Grease.
I'd also love a Disney episode, but most of all, I want a Little Shop episode - or even barring that, just John Stamos singing 'Dentist'. How have they not done this already?
I also love some of the songs mentioned, such as 'Cell Block Tango' and 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' and 'Popular' by Quinn - that would be awesome.

For Moulin Rouge, it's hard to see any of the Glee boys as Christian. All but Kurt lack the power notes that made Ewan McGregor such a surprise talent in the role. Maybe it needs a gender switch with power-voiced Rachel or Mercedes as "Christina" falling for a sweet-voiced Finn as a male Satine? And Kurt would make a wonderful Duke.

I would like to see certain numbers from these shows, but I don't know about full-on dedication episodes. I wasn't overly impressed with Rocky Horror. (And while the Madonna tribute episode was great, I'm tired of them already.)

That said, Santana and Brittany singing "Class" from Chicago would be amazing. (Or Sue and someone.)

I don't think even glee could save "Let's Bowl, Let's Bowl, let's Rock and Roll," but I know they could rock "Reproduction" and "Cool Rider!"

Dude, they can NOT do Shock Treatment. They had to edit most of the life out of Rocky, Shock Treatment would be reduced to credits if they tried.

It would be great for Glee to do more great Broadway musical numbers not heard by those of us in the middle of the nation. The first time I heard Defying Gravity was on Glee.

...How about instead of a tribute episode to one show, they do an episode of JUST show tunes? I mean, I can see Mercedes rocking "Big Blonde and Beautiful"(with a wig), while the kids learn some stuff(from Schue?) in "Reproduction" and Rachel and Quinn doing "What is this Feeling?"(though it's not so "sudden and new") and, OF COURSE, we need Carl doing "Dentist", while Finn and Rachel can YET AGAIN(for like the millionth time) profess their love in Phantom of the Opera's "All I Ask of You".

If they tribute again, might as well tribute to "Broadway Show Tunes" in general and give us plot while playing homage to some great stuff.
